7 ITALY August 10, 2012 Italy Wineries M - O See date & place of tasting in italics Growers / Wineries are in alphabetical order with area underneath Azienda Agricola Macarico Basilicata Aglianico de Vulture Rosso Del Volcano Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 The mainly black fruits are herbal and spicy the palate fresh at the start but richer and sweeter in the middle. There is a lovely savoury animal quality about the fruit lots of excitement with spice giving a lively feel to the finish. Azienda Le Macchiole Bolgheri Maremma Tuscany Bolgheri Rosso Merlot Cabernet Franc Syrah Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting March 2015 Bright on the nose mint and spice there is a fragrant charm. The palate has stoned fruit, black and red cherry, the mid palate rich with dark chocolate and a touch of cocoa the back palate lighter and fresher with balsamic notes and herbs. Le Macchiole Paleo Cabernet Franc Syrah Merlot Tasted in the La Perla del Palazzo Restaurant Radda May 2016 There is a lot happening on the nose with herbal spiciness fresh black fruits. The palate has sweetness depth in the middle both fruit and tannins ripe. There is balance freshness under the sweet fruit and although rich, supple rounded on the back palate the finish has spicy fragrance and bramble freshness. 7 Master of Wine: Derek Smedley Master of Wine: Derek Smedley

8 August 10, 2012 ITALY Fattoria di Magliano Magliano in Toscana Maremma Tuscany Pagliatura Vermentino 100% Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting London March 2014 Floral and fragrant on the nose the palate has more depth with white peach and pear. The sweetness on the mid palate is balanced and refreshed by lime and lemon on the finish. Pagliatura Vermentino 100% Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting London March 2014 Citrusy fresh on the nose the start of the palate is light and fresh fruited. There is more depth and richness on the mid palate with honeydew melon, pear and greengage but the citrus is there underpinning refreshing the finish. Rosé Wines Illario Sangiovese 100% Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting London March 2014 The nose has fragrant charm violets with hints of roses and the start of the palate is quite light with the freshness of raspberries and redcurrants. Sweeter fruit gives a little more body to the mid palate but it is the red fruited mix that gives freshness on the finish. Sinarra Sangiovese Grosso Petit Verdot Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting London March 2014 There is an intensity of flavour on both nose and palate persistent flavours red berries yet fragrances spring violets and lilac. The mid palate is sweet with ripe fruit a lovely bitter cherry character coming through on the finish. Heba Morellino di Scanso 90% Syrah 10% Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting London March Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 8

9 ITALY August 10, 2012 Bright fresh red fruits both nose and palate has a lovely complex mix of flavours. The fruit feels ripe the mid palate richer with more depth of flavour but towards the back raspberry and redcurrant gives freshness with balsamic notes the pepper spice giving excitement on the finish. Mandrarossa Sicily Grecanico Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 Both nose and palate are light zesty lemon fresh with an attractive mix of flavours. The mid palate lacks a little depth with the lime lemon mix very much in evidence at the back. Urra di Mare Sauvignon Blanc 100% Crisp crunchy gooseberry is backed by lots of lemon. The palate fresh fruited but towards the back tropical fruits give a little more weight yet there is lots of lime and minerals on the finish zesty racy. Timperosse Syrah 50% Petit Verdot 50% Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 The fruit on the nose is sweet and the palate starts with meaty richness. Red fruit freshness balances the richer flavours gives a slightly lighter feel at the back and brings out white pepper spiciness. La Marca Congeliano Veneto Sparkling Wines Prosecco La Marca di Congeliano Brut NV 88 Prosecco 100% Tasted at the Carlton Club March 2011 There is a lot happening on the nose with the freshness bringing out the fragrances. 10 August 10, 2012 ITALY Marcarini La Morra Piemonte Barolo La Serra Tasted in the Carlton Club January 2018 The fruit on the nose is sweet and ripe the start of the palate has a rich mix of black fruits. It feels fresher in the middle a mix of bramble and bilberry quite fragrant at the back with a hint of sweetness on the finish. Marcarini Arredamenti Alba Piemonte Dolcetto d Alba Fontanazza Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians January 2017 The nose has a mix of fresh red fruits the start of the palate bright the mid palate firm quite tight tannins. Cherry stone bitterness at the back but the finish has more depth and a hint of sweetness. Cantina La Marchese Grasso Sergio Lucio Daunia Puglia Il Quadrello Bombino Bianco Falanghina Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted at the Jockey Club Newmarket December 2011 Green lime and grapefruit gives freshness on the nose with behind it fleshier melon. The palate starts quite sweet with figs and pears giving some richness but then apple freshness comes through towards the back. It is not that complex and lacks a bit of fruit on the finish. 11 ITALY August 10, 2012 Il Melograno Nero d Avola Montepulciano Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted at the Jockey Club Newmarket December 2011 Red cherry shows on the nose and the start of the palate. It feels firm with hard acidity showing at the start of the palate and although there is some slightly sweeter strawberry towards the finish the firmness and bitter acid tends to cut off the fruit. Donna Cecilia Nero de Troia Montepulciano Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Chunky black cherry fills out the nose and start of the palate. Bramble and elderberry give some complexity with the dark chocolate giving richness in the middle towards the back there is lots of black and red cherry tending to give freshness and a rather drier feel on the finish. Cacc e Mmilto della Marchesa Cacc e Mmilte di Lucera Tasted in Lilley November 2011 The sweet black and red fruits that feature on the nose have an underlying bitterness. The tannins are quite evident and dry and there is a bitter sweet character towards the back. There is a lack of balance. Marco Felluga Friuli-Venezia-Giulia Mongris Pinot Grigio Tasted in Venice August 2014 The nose has depth the palate starts with rich fruit but the mid palate is lighter and fresher the finish lean, citrusy, flinty and mineral. Carantan Tasted at Belloni October 1992 Black fruits the nose has a bramble bilberry mix with green pepper spices. The palate starts fresh light in the middle but there is more depth and sweetness at the back. 12 August 10, 2012 ITALY Vigne Marina Coppi Castellania Piemonte Fausto Timorasso Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte Tasting Dartmouth House London September 2012 There is not a great deal of this white grape grown these days described as having the spirit of a red with the body of a white. Fleshy pineapple enriches the nose and fills out the start of the palate. Whilst the fruit is ripe quite sweet the underlying grapefruit balances and gives a fresher feel on the finish. Sant Andrea Barbera Tasted at the Liberty Wines tasting January 2012 The nose has the bramble that one expects from this grape lovely and vibrant the freshness probable helped the small percentage of Croatina in the blend. The palate is richer very black fruit in flavour with black cherry behind the bramble. The finish is long with a lovely mix of flavours. The freshness suits the richer dishes but the depth of flavour would marry well with beef. Sant Andrea Barbera Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte Tasting Dartmouth House London September 2012 The nose has a mix of flavours bramble with mulberry behind. The palate is sweet fruited with some nice rich flavours in the middle but towards the back the bramble tends to dominate leaving the finish fresher. Sant Andrea Barbera Barbera Croatina Tasted in the Carlton Club March 2014 The Barbera wines from Alba tend to be more masculine with richer flavours than the wines from Asti and this is a classic of the Alba style. The nose has depth the palate the richness of black plum depth of flavour a slightly dark and brooding side yet behind the powerful mix of flavours bramble and loganberry lighten and refresh. The suppleness makes it so easy to enjoy uncomplicated suiting a range of different meats and goes well with the cheese board. 13 ITALY August 10, 2012 Bright and fresh the nose is firm the start of the palate a bit tight with stoned black fruits. The mid depth and sweetness us underpinned by bramble and bilberry the back palate lighter with a hint of spice. Castellania Barbera Barbera 95% Freisa 5% Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte Tasting Dartmouth House London September 2012 There is a complex mix of flavours with black fruits intermingling with red. Bramble and redcurrant are there on the nose lots of complexity with the black fruits giving the sweetness the red fruits some freshness. The flavours linger on the finish Masi Gargagnago di Valpolicella Valpolicella Veneto Masianco Pinot Grigio 75% Verduzzo 25% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 The nose has a good weight of fruit and this fleshy richness is there at the start of the palate. There is some slate freshness in the middle balancing the sweet fruit and giving a fresher feel on the finish. Costasera Amarone Classico Corvina 70% Rondinella 25% Molinara 5% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 There is a lot happening on the nose with red fruits appearing to dominate but behind them are black rich and ripe. The fruit on the palate is concentrated real depth of flavour the sweetness balanced by some tannic firmness. The ripeness of the fruit wins through and the back palate is packed with rich ripe flavours. Costasera Amarone Classico Corvina 70% Rondinella 25% Molinara 5% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 Although there is a lot of ripe power on the nose there are fresh fruits in evidence underpinning and balancing. Bramble dominates the palate refreshed by some bilberry and red cherry the mix of fruits giving complexity. It is concentrated and rich a touch of herbal pepper spicing the finish. 14 August 10, 2012 ITALY Mazzano Amarone della Valpolicella Tasted at Belloni October 1992 The nose is light and the start of the palate fresh a lack of depth. Sweeter at the back but the underlying acidity is quite obvious the finish firm and dry. Campolongo di Torbe Amarone della Valpolicella Tasted at Belloni October 1992 The fruit on the nose is rich depth of flavour and the palate has a brooding black fruited richness. The sweetness the mid ripeness is balanced by some red fruits but it finishes with power richness and depth of flavour. Vajo Armaron Amarone Serego Alighieri Tasted at Belloni October 1992 The nose is firm the start of the palate tight. Sweet and rich in the middle and although the tannins are obvious they do not overpower the fruit. There is a hidden richness at the back the finish sweet with a nice depth of flavour. Fattoria La Massa Panzano Chianti Classico Tuscany La Massa Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians January 2012 Chunky red cherry packs out the nose and gives a rich start to the palate. Ripe rounded tannins help the richness lots of strawberry and mulberry but towards the back it is fresher slightly lighter with mainly red fruits on the long finish. Masseria Li Veli Puglia Fiano Tasted at the Armit Italian Tasting March 2016 The nose has the richness of ripe pears the start of the palate depth of flavour hints of white peach and apricot. There is underlying lime freshness a good balance of freshness and sweetness the finish is light and fresh. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 14

15 ITALY August 10, 2012 Askos Verdeca Tasted at the Armit Italian Tasting March 2016 Rich fruit the nose has depth the palate a mix of tropical fruits. Steely and bright in the middle fragrant the back palate is citrusy with layers of flavour the finish fresh flinty mineral lean and steely. Primonero Negroamaro 100% Tasted at the Armit Italian Tasting March 2016 Bright on the nose a mix of black fruits the start of the palate is light. More mid depth the fruit feels ripe the back palate has fleshy richness but there is underlying tannin which tends to tighten the finish. Orion Primitivo 100% Rich ripe fruit the nose has chocolate richness the palate is sweet and fleshy black fruits bramble and ripe plum. The tannins are ripe the mid palate has fleshy sweetness yet there is balance an underlying brightness. Askos Susumaniello Tasted at the Armit Italian Tasting March 2016 Black plum ripe black cherry the nose is packed with sweet fruit the palate has richness fleshiness the tannins ripe and rounded. Brighter at the back blackberry and rhubarb yet the finish is rich and ripe with fleshy depth. Sweet Aleatico Passito Tasted at the Armit Italian Tasting March 2016 Sweet ripe strawberry fleshy at the start the mid palate has dark chocolate dried fruit richness the back palate a fruit salad of ripe red fruits. 16 August 10, 2012 ITALY Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 The nose is light and the palate has a red fruited freshness. Although light there is a fragrant charm slight sweetness in the middle with raspberry and mineral refreshing the back palate and finish. Etna Rosso Nerello Mascalese 95% Nerello Cappuccio 5% Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 There is a lot happening on the nose floral fragrances red fruits and hints of hazel nuts. The palate has a mix of flavours an attractive complexity with sweetness and richness of flavour giving more depth on the finish. Massolino Serralunga Alba Piemonte Barbera d Alba Gisep Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte tasting Dartmouth House September 2012 There is a good depth and richness of fruit damsons backed by blackcurrant. The mid palate is dark fruited rich slightly brooding with the richness balanced by some fresher flavours that come through towards the back. Langhe Nebbiolo Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte tasting Dartmouth House September 2012 The nose has fragrance charm red cherry backed by almonds and hazel nuts. There is sweetness on the mid palate some nice rich black fruits behind which is the freshness of raspberry. Barolo Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte tasting Dartmouth House September 2012 There is a black fruited power on the nose deep brooding rich fruit all overlaid with a rose petal fragrance. The mid palate has depth of flavour ripe fruit fine tannins and the black fruited power nicely balanced by some redcurrant freshness. Barolo Tasted in the Carlton Club January 2018 The mix of bramble and bilberry on the nose is fresh fragrant the start of the palate is light with some red fruits behind the black. The palate starts with sweet fruit but the mid tannins are firm the back palate tight but there is a sweeter richer feel on the finish. 17 ITALY August 10, 2012 The nose is fragrant floral with red fruits tending to dominate. The palate is rich sweet fruited with a mix of black cherry and damsons a lovely de3pth of flavour. There is complexity richness yet freshness and quite an elegant feel to the finish. Barolo Margheria Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte tasting Dartmouth House September 2012 There is a lighter feel to the nose fragrant rose petal with some nice red cherry. The mix on the palate is complex at first the red fruits tend to overtake the black but towards the back bramble and black cherry take over giving a richer but slightly firmer feel to the finish. Barolo Parafada Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte tasting Dartmouth House September 2012 The nose has power yet elegance rose petal fragrances. The palate is rich fruited with black fruits tar, truffles and chocolate. The tannins feel ripe all beautifully balanced with layers of flavour giving complexity. The finish has richness of flavour with an underlying freshness. Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte tasting Dartmouth House September 2012 There are lovely complex flavours on the nose red and black fruits hints of almonds. The mid palate is rich fruited with black fruits tending to dominate the slightly fresher red. The richness of the fruit is balanced by the freshness and the leafiness. Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda X Anni Tasted at the Liberty Piemonte tasting Dartmouth House September 2012 Red fruits give an elegance feel to the nose and the leafiness the feel of maturity. The palate has rich flavour black fruits some bramble and black cherry backed by the richness of black truffles and tar. The finish has fragrance red fruits and hazel nuts. Mastroberardino Atripalda Avellino Campania More Maiorum Fiano di Avellino Fiano di Avellino 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 The nutty almond hazel nut character of maturity is there on the nose with behind some fresh citrus fruit. The palate has crisp fruit all very mineral and apple with sweetness and nutty richness filling out the back palate. 18 August 10, 2012 ITALY Fiano di Avellino 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Grocers Hall September 2011 The freshness on the nose brings out the fragrances with behind the fresh fruit a mix of hazel nuts and almonds. Sweet fruit gives some weight in the middle but towards the back there is freshness with a hint of pepper spice on the finish. Novaserra Greco di Tufo 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Grocers Hall September 2011 The nose is filled out with ripe apricot and pears and this weight of fruit gives richness on the palate. Under the ripe fruit there is some lime freshness and then a attractive mineral flintiness on the finish. Taurasi Aglianico 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 There is a lot of ripe fruit on the nose and the sweetness of the ripe fruit fleshes out the palate. Black fruits appear to dominate but behind are some red and their freshness balances the sweetness of the black fruits. The finish has the richness that comes with ripeness. Taurasi Aglianico 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 It feels very sweet but there is more of a red fruit influence, rich ripe strawberry. Balancing the richness there is some freshness and this gives a lighter feel to the mid palate. The back palate is packed with ripe fruit lovely lush and fleshy on the finish. Radici Taurasi Aglianco 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Grocers Hall September 2011 Racy red fruits are very much to the fore on the nose. There is freshness on the start of the palate but the mid palate is filled out by richer sweeter strawberry and red cherry. The finish is long with lots of ripe fruit yet enough acidity to balance. Radici Taurasi Riserva Aglianco 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 The nose has lots of ripe fruit but the tobacco and almond character of maturity tend to slightly dry. There is a mass of concentrated fruit on the palate all very rich ripe and fleshy. The finish feels lighter long and elegant, lots of character from the red cherry, hazel nut and tobacco mix. 19 ITALY August 10, 2012 The red fruits on the nose are backed by a mix of hazel nuts and almonds just that hint of maturity. The palate has weight of fruit lovely and rich but towards the back the freshness cuts in a cherry stone character with the leafy character at the back pointing to maturity. Matteo Correggia Piemonte Roero Arneis Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 Pineapple features on the nose and gives richness on the start of the palate. Under the sweet fruit the grapefruit and lime refresh lifting the flavours on the back palate. Roero Arneis Tasted in Lincoln s Inn March 2017 The nose has richness the start of the palate sweet fruit. Ripe pineapple is underpinned by apple fresher at the back the finish is bright and fresh. Roero Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 Both nose and palate is light fresh fragrant with a mix of raspberry and mulberry. The fruit is ripe giving a little more weight towards the back but the finish has the raspberry freshness. Barbera d Alba Bricco Marun Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 Bramble and hedgerow fruits are lovely a complex mix of flavours nice and ripe giving a sweet start to the palate. The mid palate is rich with more of a black plum character but there is enough freshness to lift the flavours on the finish. Nebbiolo Val de Preti Tasted at the J & B tasting Vintners Hall September 2012 It is light quite fragrant with red cherry dominating. The mid palate lacks a bit of weight and the finish is light and slightly attenuated. 20 August 10, 2012 ITALY Both nose and palate have the nuttiness of maturity light and fragrant. The mid palate is richer with nice sweet flavours with the raspberry freshness coming through giving a lighter feel to the finish. Mazzei Noto Sicily Zisola Nero d Avola 100% Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 There is an appealing freshness on the nose and lots of red fruits in evidence on the start of the palate. The mid palate has good depth sweetness of flavour still red fruit dominated fleshy ripe strawberry and raspberry. The fruit lingers on the long finish. Cantina Mesa Sulcis Sardinia Primo Scuro Cannonau di Sardegna Tasted at Lincoln s Inn March 2013 The nose is sweet full of ripe fruit with the aroma of violets and the palate starts with rich flavours quite lush and fleshy. Under the richness red fruits some red cherry and redcurrant give freshness but it is the ripeness of the fruit that is there at the back enriching the finish. 21 ITALY August 10, 2012 There is some lovely rich fruit on the nose greengage underpinned and refreshed by lime. The palate has a good depth of ripe fruit nicely balanced by freshness that lifts and brightens the finish. La Court Barbera D Asti Superiore Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 There is a lot of powerful fruit on the nose all feeling ripe. The richness of the fruit and rounded tannins give the mid palate a fleshy suppleness. Blackberry is backed by cherry layers of fruit ensuring complexity. The back palate is packed with ripe flavours. La Court Barbera D Asti Superiore Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 The dominant feature of the nose is sweet bramble and this is very much in evidence on the palate. There are fresher reds fruits showing on the mid palate lightening the black fruited richness. Juicy blackberry packs out the finish. The ripeness of the fruit ensures richness on the palate and although there are tannins in evidence they are rounded so giving a supple fleshiness towards the back. 23 ITALY August 10, 2012 There is a lovely aromatic quality on the nose with hints of white flowers, lemon grass and fresh grapefruit. The start of the palate has zesty freshness sweeter in the middle ripe tropical fruits a lovely depth of flavour. There is enough grapefruit and tangerine at the back to give an underlying freshness but the finish has the richness and sweetness of exotic tropical fruits. Mirabello Pavia Lombardy Pinot Grigio Tasted at the Stone House Hotel Wensleydale September 2012 Pinot Grigio has really come into fashion and it is clear to see why. There is an attractive floral freshness on the nose lots of slate and mineral yet at the back a trace of white peach sweetness. The flavours are long lingering on the back palate. The freshness of the mineral and slate certainly suits the lighter flavoured fish but there is enough fruit richness at the back to make it a good partner to chicken. Pinot Grigio Tasted in Lilley December 2012 The tropical fruit mix on the nose is fresh floral and the start of the palate has the same crispness. The mid palate is richer sweeter fruited with white peach and a tropical fruit mix. Slate and lime refresh the back palate and finish. Pinot Grigio Tasted in Lilley April 2015 The nose is fresh, citrusy with mineral, flint crispness the palate richer with a mix of white peach and tangerine. Crisp at the back the flint and lime freshness certainly suits the prawn cocktail and fish dishes but if you enjoy white wines do try it with the poultry. Pinot Grigio Tasted in Lilley March 2016 A grape that has soared in popularity as it is an excellent Jack of all Trades with its mix of nectarine richness and citrusy mineral freshness. The mid sweetness the white peach and nectarine is balanced by the lime and mineral at the back. The palate starts with freshness raspberry and redcurrant but there is a sweeter feel slightly more depth on the mid palate. It is lighter fresh fruited at the back with an attractive mix of red fruits on the finish. A Jack of all Trades as it suits fish goes well with poultry even pork. What better than enjoying a glass before dinner taking in the splendour of the view across the river to Hawes. Pinot Grigio Rosé Tasted in Lilley April 2015 The nose is a fruit salad of red fruits the start of the palate bright and fresh but there is mid sweetness an attractive strawberry richness, lighter and fresh at the back the flavours linger on the finish. It goes well with food, a good companion to the fish dishes but it is an ideal glass to enjoy with poultry and pork. Mirabello Pinot Grigio Rosé Tasted in Lilley March 2016 An ideal glass before dinner the nose is bright the palate a bowlful of red fruits with raspberries underpinned by ripe wild strawberries. Bright and fresh at the start but there is more mid depth sweeter fruit layers of flavour. The mix of freshness yet sweetness suits a variety of dishes excellent with the starters certainly goes well with fish yet has enough depth of fruit to suit poultry and pork. Mirabello Pinot Grigio Rosé Tasted in Lilley May 2017 The summer fruit salad of flavours is an ideal glass before dinner a Jack of all Trades that suits both fish and the lighter meats such as poultry and it makes a good alternative to red wine with both pork and lamb. The nose has raspberry freshness the palate is richer with wild strawberries and mulberries mid depth of flavour. Fresh fruits come through towards the back and it finishes with freshness. 25 ITALY August 10, 2012 The nose is showing a remarkable amount of nutty maturity. There is some fresher cherry on the palate but the mature feel is there in the background. The mid acidity is high giving it a hard and slightly bitter feel. Il Volano Sangiovese 75% Merlot 25% Tasted at Lincoln s Inn September 2010 Black fruits are underpinned by fresher red their ripeness giving sweetness to both nose and palate. There is the feeling of richness the fruit fleshing out the middle and giving some weight towards the back. It is a touch simple just lacking real complexity. Azienda Monaci Salento Rosé Wines Girofle Rosato Negroamaro 100% Tasted on Board Sea Cloud August 2014 Light fresh raspberry fruited the mid palate is very fresh but there is an underlying sweetness some ripe strawberry. Fresher fruits redcurrant and raspberry show at the back and give a lighter bright feel to the finish. Moncaro Abruzzo Verdicchio Classico dei Castelli di Jesi Tasted in Lilley August 2018 Rich flavours on the nose the palate has pineapple quite fleshy at the start. Lean in the middle lemon tends to dominate with at the back-palate firmness and a lack of length. Fresh and firm at the back the finish is tight and is lacking in length and richness. Montalba Castagnole Montferrato Piemonte Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato Tasted at the IWC Dinner Hilton Park Lane London September 2012 There are some serious flavours on the nose rich black fruits and the palate has depth richness power but towards the back there is a balancing freshness that gives a slightly lighter feel but the finish has black fruited power and depth. This is a truly fascinating grape. Cantina di Montalcino Montalcino Tuscany Brunello di Montalcino Tasted at the Liberty tasting The Oval September 2016 Rich and ripe on the nose the start of the palate has powerful flavours ripe black fruits the mid palate is sweet rich and ripe. Fresh on the start of the palate the mid palate is rich fleshy supple with lots of ripe fruit almost Amarone in style. There is enough structure to support with the sweetness of the fruit enriching the finish. Monte del Frà Veneto Bardolino Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians March 2016 Herbal red fruits the nose is bright and fresh the start of the palate light. Richer in the middle ripe red cherry hints of wild strawberry the sweetness balanced by fresh red fruits at the back. Cantina di Monteforte Soave Soave Classico Terre di Monteforte Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians November 2014 The nose is remarkably rich and the palate starts with sweet ripe fruit. The tropical fruit mix on the mid palate is balanced by citrus and although fresh at the back the finish has peachy richness. Soave Classico Terre di Monteforte Tasted at Lincoln s Inn November 2015 The nose is rich the palate has depth the fruit is sweet and ripe. The mid richness is underpinned by fresher flavours lighter at the back but it finishes with the richness of white peaches. Richer in the middle a mix of tropical fruits layers of flavour all balanced by an underlying freshness. It finishes with sweet fruit. Azienda Agricola Monteraponi Radda in Chianti Tuscany Chianti Classico Baron d Ugo Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 The nose is quite sweet the start of the palate fresh with a mix of red fruits. Quite light and firm in the middle and although there is sweetness at the back the finish lacks depth of fruit. Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 Light and fresh the nose lacks richness the start of the palate is firm and tight. There is a sweeter feel in the middle some quite rich red fruits but the back palate is firm and the finish tight. Sweet Vin Santo Tasted at the J & B tasting Caledonian Club July 2016 Apricots nuts the nose has an attractive mix of flavours. There is mid sweetness with the rich fruit backed by freshness lots of complex flavours and although fresh at the back the finish has depth rich sweet fruit ripe apricots. Red fruits appear to dominate but at the back there is lovely fleshy black plum. Rounded tannins help the suppleness the sweet fruit enriching the finish. Caburnio Cabernet Sauvignon 55% Alicante Bouschet 20% Merlot 15% Cabernet Franc 5% Petit Verdot 5% Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting London March 2014 The mix of red and black fruits is fresh and the palate has a mix of bramble and red cherry. It fills out in the middle with depth, richness, suppleness and fleshiness but towards the back bilberry and blackcurrant refresh bringing out herbal spiciness on the finish. Monteti Petit Verdot 55% Cabernet Franc 25% Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting London March 2014 The nose is rich with lots of ripe black fruits and the palate fleshy supple with a good depth of flavour. Behind the bramble and cassis there is herbal freshness some firm tannins but the back palate is rich ripe fruited and the finish has an exciting herbal spiciness. Monteti Petit Verdot 50% Cabernet Franc 30% Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Tasted at the Lea & Sandeman tasting London March 2014 The fruit is rich the nose has a brooding black fruited power and the palate depth packed with black cherry and bramble. The tannins give structure but feel ripe the mid palate supple with rich sweet fruit giving a fleshy richness at the back. The finish is racier with hints of pepper, herbal and spicy. Moris Farms Massa Marittima Grosseto Morellino di Scansano Tuscany The history goes back some 200 years when the Moris family moved from Spain. The clayeysandy soil they felt was ideal for the vine and started to develop their 476 hectare property, not all of course is planted with the vine. Sweet fruit gives depth and richness on the finish. Morellino di Scansano Riserva Tasted at the winery July 2008 The nose has red fruited freshness the fruit backed by hints of oak. The fruit on the palate feels ripe the mid palate fleshy but at the back there is freshness the finish has herbal bitter cherry excitement. Monteregio do Massa Marittima Sangiovese 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Tasted at the winery July 2008 The nose is firm the start of the palate hard with obvious tannins slightly green and herbal. Sweeter in the middle cassis and black cherry but at the back the herbal character the tannins close down and tend to shorten the finish. Avvoltore Sangiovese Tasted at the winery July 2008 Freshness comes from the bright red fruits with under this lovely black cherry. The tannins although firm are ripe and rounded all adding to the fleshiness of the mid palate. The back palate is full of rich fruit that gives power to the finish. Mandriolo Rosso Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians June 2012 The nose has some nice sweet flavours with a mix of bramble and mulberry. The ripeness of the fruit gives a fleshy richness to the mid palate but behind there is enough freshness to balance. The layers of redcurrant, strawberry and bramble give lots of complexity. La di Motta Veneto Pinot Grigio di Piave Tasted at Lincoln s Inn January 2016 Fresh the nose has white flowered fragrances and stone fruits. The start of the palate bright but there is depth in the middle with ripe apple, white peach and pear the richness well balanced by an underlying citric freshness. The finish has length with flavours that linger. Murgo Catania Sicily Sparkling Murgo Brut NV 91 Nerello Mascelese 100% Etna Tasted in Sicily September 2013 The minerals on the nose give a racy crispness and the start of the palate has citrus freshness. It fills out in the middle with more of a white peach character but the finish is taught citrusy and fresh. Etna Bianco Carricante Cataratto Tasted in Sicily September 2013 There is a fresh herbal feel to the nose and the start of the palate is lean and citrus fruited. The start is sweet lots of rich flavours but towards the back there is the freshness of bitter cherry lots of complexity. The finish has depth of flavour. Musita Sicily Syrah Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 The fruit on the nose is ripe and sweet and there is a nice depth of flavour on the start of the palate. Red fruits seem to dominate the middle but behind there is bramble and black cherry then fresher red comes through at the back and brings out black pepper spiciness. Nero d Avola Alicia Tasted at Lincoln s Inn November 2015 Rich and ripe on the nose the palate has depth chocolate richness with black fruits to the fore. Supple and fleshy in the middle there is an underlying freshness that balances but it fills out at the back sweet ripe lush. Il Narratone Veneto Pinot Grigio Tasted in Lincoln s Inn March 2017 Ripe pears the nose has an earthy herbal character the palate fresher with a citrus mix. The palate is lean and fresh citrus and apple and although a hint of sweetness at the back the finish is lean and quite tight. Podere del Nespoli Rubicone Romagna Dogheria Pinot Bianco Tasted in the Carlton Club March 2018 The hint of Sauvignon Blanc gives freshness the nose has fragrance charm with orange blossom and jasmine. The start of the palate is bright zesty citrus and mineral richer in the middle lots of white peach and nectarines then at the back there is tangerine freshness the fruit underpinned by minerals, length and elegance. Nicolis Ambrosan Veneto Amarone della Valpolicella Tasted in the Carlton Club March 2018 The nose has depth of flavour the fruit on the palate is wrapped round with dark chocolate and coffee, a complex mix of flavours.
