3 ) Fashion and Furs 2) Agriculture, Zootechny, Fishing and related Technologies ITALIAN TRADE FAIR EVENTS ) Food, Beverages and related Technologies During 20, Italy s trade fair system has again succeeded maintaining the high standard of its events in terms of both numbers and quality, in spite of the economic crisis affecting the country and the uncertainty surrounding the recovery. Trade fairs therefore continue to provide a strategic platform for the international promotion of Italy s specifi c products and areas of expertise: a showcase vital to Italian companies, because exports certainly have a strategic role in the growth of our economic system. This central role is confi rmed by the 202 Calendar - published in association by the Italian Regions, the National Exhibition System Coordinating Committee and the Italian Exhibition and Trade Fair Association (AEFI) - which includes 209 fairs across 4 Regions, covering 28 different product sectors, fi gures that consolidate Italy s second place in Europe in terms of the size of its exhibition sector. One factor which is certainly positive and encouraging for the entire System is that no less than 4 of these 209 events are new, while the others are annual or biennial fairs already international at their previous editions, proving the great vitality and dynamism of Italy s trade fair system. In fact, each year international events attract about 00,000 exhibitors, of whom 28% come from abroad, and about 4 million visitors, 8% of them foreign. Our trade fair system therefore continues to be highly competitive compared to its main European rivals, Germany, France and Spain, and confi rms its status as one of the main engines of the country s economic growth. However, all this is not enough if we wish to remain amongst the leaders in the exhibition sector, in Europe and worldwide. The Italian trade fair system must make substantial changes to its way of operating and adopt new business models and tools capable of responding to the processes that are generating rapid changes to the current economic situation. We need to think long and hard about the need for exhibition centres and organisers to integrate and share risks, to prevent the fragmentation of organisers in order to encourage partnerships and networks between outstanding events, to innovate our communications services with ever-increasing use of active web technologies before, during and after exhibitions, to stimulate the internationalisation of events and, last but not least, to rationalise the exhibition business as such to allow its extension into correlated fi elds. However, to grow successfully not only must the Italian trade fair system foster its own innovation process; it must also receive Government support, with policies tailored to assist its growth at both the local and the international levels. The Regions, central Government and the exhibition associations must prioritise the innovation and internationalisation of our trade fair system and act jointly, to enable our country to maintain its position as a leader in Europe and internationally. Through the National Exhibition System Coordinating Committee, local and central government bodies are working to support the maximum interaction between regional and national policies intended to strengthen the competitiveness of Italy s trade fair system, and thus of Italian industry in general. The Italian trade fair system will therefore only succeed in maintaining a strategic role, in a global economic context we hope will be positive, if it undertakes a process of deep-seated internal renewal and receives constant external support from Government, to ensure the most effective exploitation of its exhibition brands and the managerial and organisational know-how acquired, and help create promotional projects and events to attract ever-increasing attendance fi gures. I once more express my appreciation to all those who have made this publication possible, fi rst and foremost the Italian Regions and the AEFI, and hope that the presentation of the 202 calendar of Italian international trade fairs marks the fi rst step towards a year of success for our national exhibition system. Vasco ERRANI President of the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces It was with great enthusiasm that I accepted responsibility for internationalisation, a Government appointment highly appropriate to my professional and family background, since I am very well acquainted with the world of business and the challenges facing companies on today s free market. Aware of how hard it is to compete successfully during the current national and international recession, I believe it is the responsibility of public and private institutions to ensure the best systemic conditions to enable individual companies to establish and maintain profi table business relationships. Trade fairs have always been the main way of bringing demand and supply together, and in Italy s specifi c case they have helped foster the growth of the country s production system in the broadest sense, from traditional manufacturing - food, garments, furniture, mechanics - to the most innovative sectors such as environmental technologies, robotics, public utilities and services in general - and have become a major point of reference for international buyers. Today, Italy s trade fair system is Europe s second largest after Germany, and amongst the most competitive in the world. A number of our exhibition brands have already been engaged for several years on internationalisation projects targeting the new emerging economies, especially in Asia. Trade fairs have expanded their terms of reference, both within Italy, where they are working alongside manufacturing districts to fulfi l the function of marketing district of international importance for the industries concerned, and abroad, where Italian companies are also investing in joint ventures for the management of local exhibition centres and services. I believe that in this new context, the public and private institutions active in the fi eld have to fulfi l their respective roles in order to reinforce the national exhibition system, adopting polices - at the industry-wide and local level - not merely inspired by free market principles and short-term economic opportunities, but shaped in the interest of the production system (and thus of companies), working towards the shared aim of specialising and innovating Italy s trade fair offering. In this spirit - and on the request of the organisations most closely involved, the Regions and the National Exhibition Centre Associations CFI/AEFI/CFT - the Ministry has established a National Exhibition System Coordination Discussion Group, with the aim of ensuring optimal growth of Italy s international trade fair offering and its effective promotion through the harmonisation of industrial/ territorial development policies. This is a very ambitious aim, but I am convinced that all those offering exhibition services and working in this sector must strive to achieve medium-long term results by means of investments capable of generating lasting profi ts, by adopting innovative and perhaps even ambitious policies and not by encouraging the creation of duplicate events that produce no value-added for the national system and merely confuse foreign users. The interest in developing forms of public-private cooperation in the trade fair sector has been refl ected of recent years by the signing of a Sectorial Agreement between the Ministry, the Regions and Autonomous Provinces and the Exhibition Associations, applied over the years through the public co-fi nancing of a number of projects to support the internationalisation of Italian fairs. I am convinced that we are on the right track, but in the light of past experience, I believe we have to move beyond traditional forms of cooperation and that, in agreement with the Regions and the Associations, we must fi nd new, innovative, system-wide modes of operation that also meet the national interest in promoting Italy s offering of trade fairs on the international scene.
