2 Stato dell esperimento Maggio 2014 (Elba): discussione in csn1 sull appoggio della partecipazione INFN al progetto (su 2 fronti: calorimetro, magneti) Luglio 2014: lettera della csn1 al management dell esperimento All of the above considerations confirm the conviction of CSN1 that the physics case for the Mu2e experiment is very compelling CSN1 supports an Italian participation to Mu2e articulated in the following two lines: a qualified participation in the construction of the calorimeter, with important individual and team roles on multiple aspects of the project (crystals, sensors, FEE, HV/LV, DAQ, mechanics, Montecarlo simulations) electrical characterization of the superconducting cables for the solenoids of the experiment, and, possibly, supervision of the construction of one of the solenoids Pmu2e Referee - CSN1, Catania 2 Ottobre

3 Stato dell esperimento Luglio 2014: lettera della csn1 al management dell esperimento (cont) Calorimetro: scelta tecnologica Based on the currently available information, CSN1 finds the CsI option very interesting, since it presents adequate performance characteristics, is fully competitive with the BaF2 baseline and requires no significant technological breakthrough. In addition, but not secondarily, the CsI option would also imply a non-negligible reduction in cost (both for the crystals and for the sensor components) Conclusioni At the present level of the R&D and of the design of the experiment, which is summarized in the TDR prepared for the DOE CD2 review, CSN1 expresses its support to the Italian participation to Mu2e. While waiting for the definition of some relevant technological aspects of the project which are currently still open, CSN1 is in any case willing to take commitment for a significant financial support to the calorimeter project and present this recommendation to the CTS. The quantitative details of this commitment, as well as its precise time evolution, will be at least partially correlated to the definition of the open issues. 5 News since Elba's meeting Three reviews held in this period: 1) CD3-a review for starting procurement of Superconducting cables 2) IDR == Independent Director Review in preparation to CD-2 (8-10 July) 3) ICE == Independent Cost estimate (26-28 August) Number 1 has been completed. Bid for cables assigned Number 2 has been completed see recommendations. 8 Test Cavi Superconduttori FNAL has procured in 2013 prototypes for all kind of conductors to be used in MU2E solenoids. 4 different conductors:. 1 for TS, 1 for PS and 2 for the DS. 5 Cables measured this year. OK with extracted strand at FNAL. A FNAL - INFN agreement in progress to test most of the Solenoid cables at Ma.Ri.Sa. Plan is to make a total of 21 measurement runs total. Up to 2 cables/run. Roughly this corresponds to 20 cable samples in 2015 and 21 in INFN funds (180 keuro) provided to Genoa to improve MaRiSa test station. A prototype length (3.2 km) of the TS conductor was fabricated and measureme cable are summarized in Table Figure 6.46 presents the critical current t performed on full Al-stabilized conductors. The results show that the design p can be reached in a consistent manner. 9 Solenoidal System Status Superconducting cables for DS/PS ordered (Hitachi e Furukawa). First batch for June 2015, the last one one year later. Bid for TS conductor should start in two months. DS/PS final vendor has been selected. Not yet official while finalizing the contract but seems that an American firm selected (General Atomics?). The Buy American Act helped (-12% + 3% of taxes for importing). The biggest IDR recommendation posed on the solenoids. Especially on the risks (schedule and cost) for the long term fabrication. A CD3-C review will then decide the start of the final fabrication and start of construction for all pieces. It is expected end of For the TS, they will anticipate the CD3 for this system at the upcoming October review. If obtained the bid for the TS will start. Modules cost is ~ 6 M$.
