3 Barrel toroid Current status: 2 coils assembled in parallel Coil#2: Insertion into cryostat vessel Coil#1: Heat shield completed Coil 1 Coil 2 A serious delay: First coil now ready for test by middle of May, and ready for installation end of July 2004 (5 months delay) Last coil in March /4/2004 S. 4 End cap toroids The assembly proceeds with the cold mass fabrication at the factory (all 16 coils are wound, and the first eight for ECT-1 are impregnated) Final integration into the vacuum vessels (ready since some time) will start in May 2004 at CERN The project has been reorganized with the cooling line welding being done at CERN during integration First of the two ECT cold masses pre-assembled 6/4/2004 S. 5 Solenoid The solenoid was inserted into its final position in the LAr barrel cryostat on 27 th February 2004 Next are cold tests for the LAr calorimeter and the solenoid, followed by the installation in the pit in October /4/2004 S. Patricelli - CSN1 - Roma 5

6 Inner Detector - Pixels Sensor production at 60% complete Module production has started, expect to just meet the 10% module production milestone (May-04), still to be proven is the rate (throughput) for the two bumpbonding companies Raw support structures delivered Complete prototype barrel Pixel stave with (almost) final products 6/4/2004 S. 7 Inner Detector Barrel SCT 55% of the modules have been produced, completion scheduled for end August 2004 Barrel assembly started with services, first of the four cylinders was almost ready for module mounting, but a new problem encountered: module support brackets need intervention (5 became loose on B3) The schedule consequences of the bracket problem is currently still under discussion B3 barrel SCT cylinder equipped with services 6/4/2004 S. 8 Inner Detector End cap SCT Module production has now started at several sites Support disk preparation is in full swing, and first module mounting is foreseen in April 2004 The hybrid problem for the modules is now solved, still critical is the delivery of thermo-conductor supports ( spines ) within an ISTC contract Most, but not all, sites are now qualified, but more resources may be needed to catch up the module production schedule The current end-cap A disk assembly schedule is late with respect to the requirements to meet the end-cap integration and installation schedule (will be reviewed after first disk done) First end-cap SCT disk equipped with most of the services 6/4/2004 S. 9 Inner Detector TRT All barrel modules are made, and 75% are at CERN, being prepared for final integration into the barrel Inner Detector support structure The end-cap TRT wheel assembly is now in full swing after the delamination problem of the web circuits has been finally solved (even though much attention is still needed) Barrel Inner Detector support structure for the TRT and SCT 6/4/2004 S. 10 LAr calorimetry All modules have been stacked and cold tested The barrel EM calorimeter is installed in the cryostat, the cold vessel has been closed and welded The first of the two end-cap cryostats has the EM and the two hadronic wheels inserted, next will be the FCAL which is pre-assembled and ready Cold tests of the barrel EM calorimeter and the solenoid will start in April 2004 End-cap cryostat with EM and hadronic wheels FCAL ready for insertion 6/4/2004 S. 11 Tile calorimeter After complete pre-assembly of the barrel, including a load test with a dummy weight for the LAr calorimeter, the barrel was dis-assembled again for transport to the cavern (except for the lower eight modules which were transported together to pit-1 on 27 th February 2004) Assembly in the cavern progresses well 6/4/2004 S. 13 Attività INFN (Pixel) E stata completata la produzione degli MCC. I chip disponibili sono più di quelli necessari. Dopo la pre-produzione soddisfacente dei chip di FE è stato emesso l ordine per la produzione ed i chip necessari per i primi due layers dovrebbero essere testati entro ottobre-novembre. A Milano è in costruzione l ITT (Integration Testing Tool) che permetterà di fare un significativo test di assemblaggio di tutta la parte centrale dell Inner Detector. Si è in attesa di capire lo yield nel bump-bonding nella produzione dei moduli assemblati. Nei prossimi mesi, dopo che gli yields finali di produzione saranno consolidati, verrà presa una decisione sulla costruzione del 3 layer. 6/4/2004 S. Patricelli - CSN1 - Roma 13

14 Attività INFN (MDT) La produzione delle camere procede in maniera soddisfacente, tuttavia è in vista una crisi di personale tecnico per la mancata riassegnazione degli art.6. Il problema si acuirà con la partenza delle attività di commissioning al CERN. L unico grosso item che resta da finanziare è il sistema di LV che dovrebbe trovare una soluzione positiva in questa riunione della CSN1. 6/4/2004 S. Patricelli - CSN1 - Roma 14

15 Attività INFN (RPC-produzione) unità RPC /05/02 01/11/02 01/05/03 01/11/03 01/05/04 01/11/04 Da settembre ad oggi il rate di produzione delle Unità è nettamente migliorato ed ha oggi un andamento tale da permettere di terminare la produzione on schedule. 346 Unità sono già certificate con Raggi Cosmici e 308 sono già al CERN a BB5. 6/4/2004 S. 16 Attività INFN (RPC-cablaggi) La prima stazione MDT-RPC con il nuovo schema di cablaggio è stata assemblata al CERN ma il ritardo nell inizio delle attività di serie comincia diventare critico. E in via di completamento ai LNF un test funzionale integrato RPC-MDT- LVL1. Alcuni dettagli tecnici del cablaggio sono ancora da congelare e c è anche un possibile aumento dei costi. 6/4/2004 S. 17 Attività INFN (LVL-1 trigger) L iter per la gara per le PAD e PAD-OR è in via di completamento. I primi prototipi delle PAD sono attesi in questi giorni e la consegna dei primi pezzi della produzione per ottobre-novembre. La mancanza dell elettronica finale rende l integrazione MDT-RPC più laboriosa. L acquisto dei componenti per la produzione degli splitter è terminato e questi schede dovrebbero essere disponibili sin dalle prime fasi dell attività di integrazione (anche tenuto conto della preproduzione). I link ottici sono pronti per andare in produzione. La produzione dei cavi può essere avviata dopo che sono state definite le lunghezze e le tipologie. La modifica del disegno dell ASIC della matrice di coincidenza è in ritardo e non è ancora possibile fissare una data precisa per la disponibilità del prototipo. 6/4/2004 S. 18 Combined Test Beam (1) Nel periodo Maggio Ottobre è prevista una intensa ed importante attività sui fasci di test. Il run di test combinato ad H8 è l unica occasione in cui, prima dell inizio di LHC, sarà possibile testare una slice completa del barrel di ATLAS, dai pixel fino alle camere a mu. Sarà un test di integrazione completo (rivelatori, elettronica, readout, trigger, DAQ, DCS, analisi dati). Permetterà di capire come ottimizzare le strategie di commissioning del detector dopo l installazione nel pit. 6/4/2004 S. Patricelli - CSN1 - Roma 18

19 Combined Test Beam (2) Il programma è molto ambizioso e, per alcuni dei gruppi INFN, si sovrappone temporalmente al completamento della produzione o all inizio di altre attività impegnative come il commissioning e l integrazione di MDT ed RPC al CERN. I vari gruppi sono impegnati a valutare la disponibilità di risorse umane per far fronte al meglio a questi impegni. 6/4/2004 S. Patricelli - CSN1 - Roma 19
