3 Packaging con Edistir : le tecnologie Packaging with Edistir : the technologies L estrusione è la tecnologia più utilizzata per la trasformazione del Polistirene e consente di realizzare una foglia compatta per i settori del monouso e del lattiero caseario, foglia espansa per il confezionamento di cibi freschi quali carne, pesce e verdure e foglia bi orientata per dolci e gastronomia. La foglia deve quindi essere termoformata per ottenere contenitori di diversa forma e volume. Estrusione cast L estrusione cast è basata sul modellamento della massa fusa, plastificata ed omogeneizzata nell estrusore, in una struttura piana (foglia) che viene raffreddata e stabilizzata dimensionalmente mediante il contatto con rulli. Con la combinazione di estrusori differenti (coestrusione) è possibile ottenere foglie multistrato di polimeri tra loro simili o differenti (tab.2). A differenza dei film in bolla, i film cast hanno maggiore trasparenza, lucentezza e rigidità. Extrusion is the most used technology for the transformation of Polystyrene and allows to realize a compact leaf for the sectors of the disposable and the dairy, the foam sheet for the packaging of fresh foods such as meat, fish and vegetables and leaf bi oriented for sweets and gastronomy. The leaf must then be thermoformed into containers of different shapes and volumes. Cast extrusion The cast extrusion is based on modeling of the molten mass, plasticized and homogenized in the extruder, in a flat structure (leaf) which is cooled and stabilized dimensionally by means of the contact with rollers. With the combination of different extruders (coextrusion) it is possible to obtain multilayer leaves of polymers between their similar or different (table 2). With respect to the blown films, cast films have high trasparence, gloss and stiffness. Filmatura in bolla La filmatura in bolla prevede il passaggio del polimero fuso attraverso una trafila anulare. Viene generato un tubo (parison) con un diametro relativamente piccolo che subisce un immediata espansione per insufflamento di aria e uno stiramento per trazione. Durante il processo il film si raffredda e solidifica, cosicché può essere piegato fra i rulli di traino. Il raffreddamento si effettua per convezione forzata soffiando aria attraverso un anello posto al di sopra della filiera. FFS Il Form Fill Seal (FFS) è un processo produttivo largamente impiegato nel settore lattiero caseario che prevede la termoformatura della foglia, il riempimento del contenitore ottenuto e la chiusura ed etichettatura in un processo in continuo ad alta produttività. La foglia utilizzata può essere composta da diversi starti a seconda della destinazione d uso finale. Ad esempio, una foglia per cibi a lunga conservazione deve possedere uno strato barriera all ossigeno e al vapore acqueo (EVOH strato) e avere buone caratteristiche di termoformabilità (PS strato). Blowing extrusion The blown film provides the passage of the molten polymer through an annular extruder. A pipe (parison) is generated with a relatively small diameter that undergoes an immediate expansion to blow-in of air and a stretching for traction. During the process, the film cools and solidifies. In this way, it can be folded between the pulling rolls. The cooling process occur by forced convection, blowing air through a ring settled over the extruder. FFS The Form Fill Seal (FFS) is a widely used in dairy production process involving the thermoforming of the leaf, the filling of the container obtained and closing and labeling in a continuous process with high productivity. The leaf used can be composed of several layers depending of the final use destination. 4 Direct gassing La produzione di foglia espansa è un estrusione modificata da additivazione in linea con un agente espandente. La necessità di un intima miscelazione dell espandente nel polimero fuso e di un raffreddamento omogeneo della miscela fino alla temperatura adatta alla schiumatura ( ) induce spesso ad allestire l impianto con due estrusori specializzati in compiti distinti: un estrusore primario, spesso un bivite, per plastificazione e iniezione dell agente espandente; un estrusore secondario per miscelazione e raffreddamento della miscela fino alla temperatura di schiumatura. La testa di estrusione termina con una sottile fessura lineare (die slot) che porta la miscela alle condizioni atmosferiche. La rapida caduta di pressione attraverso il die slot innesca il processo di schiumatura. Un calibratore porta la schiuma al suo spessore definitivo, raffreddandola fino al consolidamento. Le bobine di foglia espansa vengono dopo stoccaggio, termoformate per la produzione di vassoi. Direct gassing The production of expanded sheet is a modified in-line with additive by extrusion with a blowing agent. The fast pressure fall - through the die slot - activates the foaming process. A calibrator leads the foam to its last thickness, cooling it until the structure stabilization. The coils of foamed foil are, after to be stocked, thermoformed for the production of foamed trays. Foglie bi-orientate La produzione di foglia orientata viene realizzata tramite stiramento di una foglia cast. Il processo è a due stadi, la foglia viene stirata dapprima longitudinalmente da due set di calandre e poi trasversalmente in un forno. Tramite questa tecnologia è possibile migliorare alcune caratteristiche della foglia come le meccaniche (lo sforzo a rottura, il modulo elastico), la permeabilità all ossigeno e al vapore e la trasparenza. La foglia viene poi termoformata per ottenere contenitori di varie dimensioni. Termoformatura La termoformatura produce manufatti per mezzo della deformazione plastica di una lastra piana o una foglia in bobine portata alla temperatura di rammollimento tramite riscaldamento. Sono fatti con foglia (in genere, spessore inferiore ad 1 mm) tutti i contenitori monouso come ad esempio i bicchieri caffè da vending e i vasetti yogurt. La tecnica della termoformatura permette molte varianti tecnologiche: stampo maschio o femmina, formatura e pre-stiro in vuoto o in pressione ed altre. Una volta termoformato, il manufatto deve essere liberato dallo sfrido con una lavorazione meccanica successiva. Bi-oriented foil The production of oriented leaf is realized via stretching of a cast leaf. The process has two stages, the first leaf is stretched longitudinally by two sets of calenders and then transversely in an oven. Through this technology, it is possible to enhance some features of the foil: mechanics (as the tensile strenght at break and the tensile module), permeability to oxygen and to steam vapor, and transparency. The BOPS foil is then thermoformed to obtain containers of various dimensions. Thermoforming The thermoforming process produces objects through the plastic deformation of semi-finished items, heated until their rubber phase. These semi-finished articles are foils in coil or flat sheets. All disposable containers as coffee cups or yogurt cups are made from a foil (usually less than 1 mm thickness). The thermoforming technique allows for several technological varables such as male or female mould, vacuum or pressure blowing and forming and others. Once thermoformed, the item must be cleaned from scraps through a next mechanical operation. 6 7

The Edistir portfolio of Versalis presents a large variety of GPPS and HIPS grades suitable in the packaging sector (tab. 3). tab. 3 N 3380 N 3560 N 3840 N 3910 Tra i GPPS Edistir più utilizzati, si annoverano: Edistir N 3380 è un polistirene che combina ad un alta termoresistenza, eccellenti caratteristiche meccaniche. Nel settore del packaging, tale grado trova principalmente impiego nella produzione di foglia espansa e foglia bi-orientata. Viene impiegato anche in stampaggio nella realizzazione di contenitori trasparenti a medio spessore. Edistir N 3560 è un polistirene che combina una buona termoresistenza a buone caratteristiche meccaniche. Ampiamente utilizzato nei settori del monouso e del vending, consente di realizzare tramite estrusione in mescola con polistirolo antiurto, foglie dalle quali ottenere tramite termoformatura, piatti e bicchieri, vaschette gelato e portauova. Tramite stampaggio, consente di realizzare stoviglie naturali e colorate e contenitori a basso spessore. Between the Edistir GPPS mainly used grades, are included the following: Edistir N 3380 is a polystyrene which combines high thermoresistance with excellent mechanical features. In the packaging sector, this grade is mainly used in the production of XPS and BOPS foil. It is used also through injection moulding to obtain clear containers of medium thickness. Edistir N 3560 is a polystyrene which combines a good thermoresistance with good mechanical features. Largely used for disposable and vending applications, it can be extruded, in blend with HIPS, in foils from which through thermoforming - obtain plates, cups, ice cream boxes and eggs trays. By injection, it can be used to produce cutlery and also, low thickness containers in natural e colored version. Può essere impiegato in coestrusione per ottenere gli strati lucidi dei manufatti del monouso e del vending. Se mescolato con polistirolo antiurto tradizionale, consente di realizzare manufatti termoformati ad alto angolo di sformatura (bicchieri yogurt). Infine, tramite stampaggio e grazie alla sua fluidità, consente di realizzare con cicli veloci, contenitori aventi parti sottili e complesse. Edistir N 3910 è un polistirene ad altissima fluidità. Può essere impiegato come coestruso lucido su HIPS, in estrusione in mescola con HIPS o SBS trasparente oppure, per lo stampaggio di spessori sottili e impronte multiple con cicli veloci come quelle usualmente adottate nella produzione delle palette caffè. Edistir N 3840 is a polystyrene which matches flowability to good mechanical features. It can be coextruded to realize glossy layers for the disposable and vending items. In blend with HIPS, it allows to produce deep draw thermoforming items (such as yogurt cups). By injection, thanks to its flowability, it can be molded in fast cycles, to produce containers having complex and thin parts. Edistir N 3910 is a polystyrene having high flowability. It can be used as coextruded (for obtaining glossy layers), in blend with HIPS or SBS, or for fast injection moulding of thin items and multiple cavity moulds as those used in the production of coffee stirrer. 6 Tra gli HIPS Edistir più utilizzati, si annoverano: Edistir R 850E è un polistirene super-antiurto dotato di una buona termoresistenza. Nel settore del packaging, viene generalmente impiegato, in miscela con GPPS, nell estrusione di foglia compatta per i settori del monouso e del lattiero-caseario. Edistir R 850E può essere utilizzato anche per l ottenimento di coperchi opachi come quelli usualmente utilizzati nelle bevande da asporto. Edistir SR 550 è un polistirene alto-antiurto ad alta fluidità e con buona elasticità. Nel settore del packaging, può essere adoperato da solo o in mescola con GPPS per realizzare foglie dalle quali ottenere articoli che necessitano di buona termo formabilità come vaschette gelato (parte interna) o portauova. Mescole di Edistir SR 550 con GPPS possono essere adoperate per produrre tappi. Grazie alla sua fluidità, Edistir SR 550 può essere stampato facilmente con l aggiunta di master colore per l ottenimento di contenitori da food packaging colorati. Particolarmente indicato per le applicazioni a bassa temperatura. Edistir ICE R 830D è un polistirene alto-impatto ad elevata tenacità e resistente allo stress cracking. Grazie alla sua alta resistenza chimica, trova largo impiego nella realizzazione di celle e controporte per Frigoriferi e articoli termoformati destinati al contenimento di cibi grassi quali margarina, panna, burro. Edistir RC(L) 600 è un polistirene medio-antiurto con buona fluidità e ad elevata brillantezza superficiale. Nel settore del packaging, può essere impiegato nella realizzazione di strati coestrusi lucidi oppure in stampaggio per la realizzazione di contenitori. In the packaging sector, it can be extruded alone or in blend with GPPS to obtain foils with good thermoformability as requested for ice creams boxes (internal part) or for eggs trays. Mixtures of Edistir SR 550 with GPPS can be used also to produce caps. Thanks to its flowability, Edistir SR 550 can be molded easily, also with the addition of color masterbatches. It is particularly suitable for low temperature applications. Edistir ICE R 830D is a high impact polystyrene with high toughness. It is a high stress cracking resistant grade; thanks to this property, it is mainly suitable to produce by thermoforming inner liner and counter door for Refrigerator and also to thermoform fatty foods containers (e.g cream, butter). Edistir RC(L) 600 is a medium-impact polystyrene with good flowability and high gloss. Mediante studi di tipo LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), è stato dimostrato che stoviglie monouso in polistirolo hanno un impatto ambientale complessivo pari o migliore di quelli in cartone pressato o PLA. Plastic packaging: too valuable to be wasted In 2012, about 25 million tons of plastic have ended in the disposal chain. 62% has been re-used through recycling and energy recovery. 38% has been landfilled.
