DELLA Project Main Goal Implement an open pilot plant devoted to make Concentrated Solar Energy both a programmable energy source and a distribution ancillary energy system ; Develop an open hardware power plant for testing novel energy storage control management algorithm in micro-grid; Evaluate the technical and economic condition for the use of small power size Concentrated Solar Power Plant as storage system for power grid ancillary service; Evaluate the technical and economic conditions for the correct integration of Thermal and Electrochemical storage; Define a day ahead the energy input profile of power plant in order to support the Distributor Network Operator
DELLA Organization The project is supported by the European Union The Industry and Energy Office (Assessorato all Industria) of Sardinian Region is the Institutional Supervisor of the project The Project Manager is ENAS, the Regional Water Network Operator, which will manage the power plant after the conclusion of the experimentation The Coordinator of research activity is Sardegna Ricerche, which will manage the start-up and the experimentation for three years and will monitor and disseminate of results
DELLA The Pilot power plant Pilot plant will be located in Sardinia in the Industrial District of Ottana It is fed by solar energy and it has an electric rating power of one MWe and an cover an area of about 4,5 hectares. Ottana It is characterized by : a Concentrator Solar Power Plant (CSP) of 600 kwe rating power; a Concentrator PV (CPV) power plant of 400 kwe rating power;
DELLA Main Characteristic of Energy Storage Pilot Power Plant The CSP Plant has a Thermal Storage System of 14,6 MWht that allows an electricity production at rating power for 5 hours in absence of solar energy (3MWhe). The Thermal storage system consists of two tank with a volume of 330 m3 designed to manage 195 ton of thermal oil. The first tank (the hot one) is characterized by an operative temperature of 260 C, the second one (the cold one ) has an average working temperature of 150 C. An Molten salt battery (es.nas- ZEBRA Battery) characterized by a minimum rating power 250 kwe and a maximum capacity of 1MWhe.

DELLA Research Activity The open pilot nature of the plant will be particularly suitable in order to do research into the following topics: optimal reference power production profiles, defined one day ahead on the basis of both economical and technichal optimization criteria: real-time management strategies, aiming to: track the reference power production profile as good as possible, thus increasing the power production reliability mitigating the power production fluctuations due to the inherent unprogrammable nature of this kind of Renewable Energy Sources
