Boston University Study Abroad Venice CAS LI 111 FIRST SEMESTER OF ITALIAN FALL 2013 Prof.ssa: Claudia Baldelli Office hours: to be decided individually with the teacher Course schedule: mon + wed 12.00 p.m 2.00 p.m Email: baldelli@bu.edu COURSE OBJECTIVES The course focuses on basic grammar structures, without forcing the natural language acquisition process, and is enriched with vocabulary and communicative elements in order to provide the students with the necessary tools for living in a foreign country. The course also includes special sessions for the presentation and the practise of the specific vocabulary of art, which will be part of the regularly scheduled assignments and in the final exam. Even if on a very basic level, the course will develop the ability of comprehension and oral production with the help of specific didactic material and with class individual or group activities. Audio and written materials will be regularly used to develop the comprehension ability: Oral texts from CDs, videos and songs; Authentic written material Role-plays and group activities based on the cooperative learning approach will help develop the oral production ability, consolidate grammar knowledge and memorize new words. Contextualization has a leading role in the acquisition of language and vocabulary. Taking notes is part of the course, it integrates the comprehension and production abilities. Written compositions: students are asked to prepare 100-150 words compositions and they will be evaluated for what concerns: grammar, vocabulary,cohesion, coherence, contents. Participation and homework: students are asked to participate actively in class, which implies questions and interventions in order to let the teacher evaluate the class progress. Grammar quizzes: they are composed of grammar and vocabulary exercises based on the topics developed and studied during the course.

Gli animali e l arte : is a project which includes the use of the LESSICO SPECIFICO studied during the course, site observations and photos. For the final exam students have to prepare a power point in which they present and analyze the use of animals in arts (animal used in pictures, mosaics, engravings.) They have to include: A brief description of the animal; Symbolism connected to the animal Where in Venice they found the animal in art Describe the animal from an artistic point of view Find at least a couple of Italian idiomatic expressions or proverbs about the animal If possible, give details about the consideration of the animal in the Italian culture Nothing can be written in the power point. Attendance Boston University Padova students are expected to attend each and every class session, tutorial, and field trips required for the class.
