ECONOMY DATABANK: 2009 RESULTS OF THE TOP 170 COMPANIES Also this year, Databank carried out for Xylon an interesting survey, analyzing the results of the industries closest to woodworking. The 50 most important companies (in terms of net turnover in 2009) were selected in the areas of: "woodworking machinery"; "wood and furniture: production", "wood and furniture: sales, while the top-20 were included in the wooden windows and parquet segment. For each company, net turnover and number of employees in the 2008/2009 period were measured. For the same period, also the Roe indexes (declared result/own means) were calculated. The ranking of each company is based on the net turnover of 2009. The turnover data refer to consolidated financial statements, so in many cases woodworking machinery are just a part of the total turnover. Unfortunately no data extracted by type of production are available. SOME REMARKS... AT INDUSTRY LEVEL The purpose of the survey was to give a picture of the most significant (largest) manufacturers of woodworking machinery and accessories, and their customers. The overall framework can be summed up in tables 1 and 2. Five companies operating in the woodworking machinery ranking by growth rates top ten, while just three companies are included in the revenue-based one. Three companies of the wood and furniture: production industry are included in the growthbased ranking top ten, while two companies are present in the revenue-based one. Two companies of the wooden windows and parquets industry are included in the growth-based ranking and in the revenue-based one. There are no companies in wood and furniture: sales industry ranking growth-based top ten, while three companies are present in the revenue-based one. For each of the four industries considered, the detailed composition is given in table 3.... AND AT ORGANIZATION LEVEL The average size in terms of turnover is 23 million euros for companies in the woodworking machinery industry (it was 37 million euros in 2008); 70 million euros for wood and furniture: production (it was 87 million euros in 2008); 14 million euros for wood and furniture: sales and 36 million euros for wooden windows and parquet industry. The following calculation criteria were applied. Net turnover: net turnover includes revenues from the sales of finished products, semifinished and raw materials, royalties for know-how transfer, active commissions, fees for leasedout assets and it is net of license fees, Vat, manufacturing duties, discounts and returned sales. For engineering companies, it also includes the variation of current works. Net turnover variation: it is the percent variation of net turnover over the previous year. Employees: employees refers to the average number of employees declared in the balance sheet. Net turnover/employees: it is the ratio between net turnover and average number of employees. Roe: Roe is the percent ratio between net profits/losses and net assets. tro Tecnologico Italiano Sag and Imeas. In terms of growth Falcioni recorded excellent results, while quite good results was recorded by Del Tongo, Working Process, Scrigno, Rubner Turenwerk and Primultini. High productivity per employee characterized the wood and furniture: production industry, with an average of 217 thousand euros, with values above the average for Chateaux D Ax. Only 11 companies of the 170 considered (6.5 percent) recorded a turnover increase. One of the main reasons of this trend so negative was due to the rough shrinkage in exports, representing about 70 percent of Italian production on all major markets. by Emanuela Pezzarossa Table 3 - BALANCES Industry Number 2009 income 2008 income of Companies (000 ) (000 ) Woodworking machinery 50 1,146,436 1,833,366 Wood and furniture: production 50 3,508,850 4,362,289 Wood and furniture: sales 50 698,019 887,791 Wooden windows and parquets 20 712,711 882,384 Total 6,066,016 7,965,830 January-February 2011 XYLON INTERNATIONAL 25
