SECTION I READING SKILLS (30 Marks) Section I is COMPULSORY. Read carefully passages A, B, C, D and E, then answer the questions that follow. Answer the questions in the spaces provided in this paper. All answers MUST be written in ENGLISH. What did the city council of Milan recently forbid? The council was trying to reduce damage to: (i)... (ii)... What happened in the rest of the country as a result of this initiative? According to the Minister, what else is needed to solve the problem?

Who feels threatened by European production and safety standards? What is the aim of the 1993 regulation? What do many people consider is necessary for a good pizza? Why have pizza makers heaved a sigh of relief?

What food did the doctor prescribe for Countess Mocenigo? What did Cipriani do to make the food more appetising? (i)...... (ii)...... Why was the recipe named carpaccio? How does the more common modern version differ from Cipriani s original recipe?

PASSAGE D ANGOLI O CURVE? In what way are most modern buildings different from natural forms? Why do some people wish to go back to more primitive building shapes? Describe the unusual design feature that allows climate control in the house in Brittany.

How can you improve your skiing, according to some instructors? How did Il Cielo exploit this claim? What happened when darkness fell? What is the likely consequence of this successful initiative?
