EW CURRENT TRANSFORMERS Introduction The EW8ET series CTs are used to reduce the nominal primary current to 5A on the secondary. In order to monitor the energy consumptions these transducers should be properly connected to an esaware e-meter. General features General Nominal primary current: In (1) Nominal secondary current: Rated frequency range: 5A 40 60Hz Thermal nominal current of short circuit (lter) (2) : 40 80 IpN for 1sec Dynamic nominal current of short circuit (ldin) (3) : 2,5 Iter Standing overcurrent supported by the primary: 1,2 In (1) Max. working voltage: 720V~ Working temperature: -25 C +50 C Storage temperature: -40 C +80 C Relative humidity (not condensed): 90% Protection degree: IP30 (CEI EN 60529) Connections Primary: Secondary: Housing Material: Dimensions: IN: P1 / OUT: P2 IN: S1 / OUT: S2 ABS self-extinguishing (1) Safety Working voltage: 720V~ max. Isolation voltage: 3kV~ @ 50Hz for 1min Safety value (4) : N 5 Isolation: class E @ in the air Construction Compliant with the standards: CEI 38-1, IEC 185, VDE 0414, EN60044-1, EN60044-1A, EN61869-1, EN61869-2 (1) See the specific CT model (2) Maximum RMS value with secondary shorted (3) Maximum peak value supported by the CT with secondary shorted (4) Safety value (Sf) definition: ratio between the primary current which due the saturation of the magnetic core and the nominal current. Lower the value of N, greater is the protection provided by the CT
How to use the CTs WARNING Working with the secondary winding opened can cause potentially dangerous surges and overheating! WARNING Follow the connection diagram shown in Fig.1 being careful to respect the direction of the currents both on the primary (P1 and P2) and on the secondary (S1 and S2). Wrong connection may compromise the measurements or may cause damage to the CT or to EW800B! In a correct installation, the current should flow from the power line to the load, therefore the CT should be installed with incoming current on P1 and outgoing current on P2. On the secondary, connect S1 to the input and S2 to the output of the EW800B s current channel. It is advisable to install a CT with rated primary current equal to the nominal phase current. It is advisable to wrap the phase cable on the primary more than once if the nominal phase current is lower than the CT rated primary current, an example is shown in Fig. 2. This operation does not modify neither the technical features, nor the accuracy class of the CT. EXAMPLE To measure a nominal line current of 50A with a CT transformation ratio of 150A/5A, the user should wrap the line wire three times on the primary (see Fig. 2) in order to measure a primary current of 150A In order to properly measure the current, set the EW800B s transformation ratio equal to 50A/5A instead of 150A/5A Fig. 1 Fig. 2
Power consumption of the cables that connect the CT to EW800B The following table shows the power consumption of the two cables that connect the transducer to EW800B. The burden required to the CT is equal to the sum of the power consumption of the two cables and of the EW800B s current channel! Refer to EW800B s user or installation manual to determine the power consumption of each current channel. The CTs should be installed as close as possible to the EW800B to achieve the declared accuracy of the measures!
