Grammar focus (Grammatica) I verbi modali esprimono il modo in cui il soggetto si pone nei confronti dell'azione che compie, per esempio: capacità, possibilità, permesso, richiesta, obbligo, anticipazione, ecc. In seguito i verbi modali più utilizzati nella lingua inglese: can/could (In alcuni contesti could viene utilizzato come passato prossimo del verbo can ) Capacità: I can swim.(so nuotare.) She can t understand you.(non può capirti.) When I was a child, I could see fairies.(quando ero bambino potevo vedere le fate.) Possibilità: The story can be true. (La storia potrebbe essere vera.) He could be telling the truth. (Potrebbe essere che lui dica la verità.) Chiedere/dare permesso: You can open your eyes. (Puoi aprire gli occhi.) Richiesta: Can you help me? (Puoi aiutarmi?) must Obbligo: You must come back before 10! (Devi tornare prima delle 10!) Must I arrive there early? (Devo arrivare lì presto?) Anticipazione: He must be so telling the truth. (Deve per forza dire la verità.) may/might Chiedere/dare permesso: You may stay here. (Puoi rimanere qui.) May I ask your name? (Posso sapere il Suo nome?) * May I~? è una variante di cortesia di Can I~? Might I ask your name? (Potrei sapere il Suo nome?) * Might I~? è una variante di cortesia di May I~? should Opinione personale / consiglio / raccomandazione: You should believe in yourself. (Dovresti credere in te stesso.) He should resign now. (Adesso dovrebbe dare le dimissioni.)
