4 GREECE: (1) L ecomuseo di Koronos e delle Miniere di smeriglio comprende iniziative in diversi siti. A Koronos si trovano il Centro informazioni dell ecomuseo, il museo etnografico, le raccolte di ricami e altri materiali artigianali, la biblioteca, il monumento ai caduti dell occupazione tedesca, la collezione archeologica, esempi di architetture tradizionali, di costumi locali, la Casa della Associazione Gente di Koronos, mulini ad acqua e a vento, frantoi ed esposizioni di prodotti agricoli e infine la casa di Nikiforos Mandilaras, giovane avvocato assassinato per le sue brillanti indagini sulle macchinazioni che precedettero il golpe del Ad Argokiliotissa si trova il Pellegrinaggio di Panagia Argokiliotissa (sacrestia, refettorio, biblioteca, casa d accoglienza); ad Atsipapi, le fattorie e aie lastricate per la battitura e alla documentazione dell agricoltura arcaica; nella Baia di Lyonas, le residenze dei lavoratori dello smeriglio, i magazzini, i pontili di carico del materiale di estrazione; a Liori, la chiesetta di Panagia Kera (IX secolo). Un po dovunque è possibile vedere terrazzamenti a secco e molte installazioni produttive legate alle attività rurali e contadine. Nikiforos era nativo di Naxos. Oggi la sua casa è un monumento e rientra nel progetto di ecomuseo. 7 CONTENTS AND DEFINITIONS What is a cultural district? Initially, the term district used to indicate a specific territory, seconded to the sphere of influence of a certain town. In the economic sphere, it has been utilized together with the use of the adjective industrial, in order to target a territory characterized by the prevalence of a specific productive sector ( shoes, textile, etc ) By adding the attribute cultural, this is meant to indicate a territory featured by two distinct aspects: 1) there is a body valorizing cultural resources 2) the valorization process is labeling the quality of the infrastructure and the external offers 7

The eco-museum intervenes in the space of a community, in its historical changing,by proposing not only day-to-day objects but also landscapes, architecture, ancient know-how and traditional oral testimonies as parts of a unique concept. It contains an agreement between a community and a territory; in this pact the community commits itself in taking care of its territory 9

14 Why the eco-museum for MEMAQ? to give back to the local population the task to protect, to illustrate, to re-discover their own Mediterranean Maquis, by letting them live the traditions, the holidays, the recipes, the foodfestivals, etc.. to underline the uniqueness of the Maquis:the method of theme-schematization of the territory will enable each territorial pilot-area of the partnership to organize its own eco-museum district on the basis of its specific environmental uniqueness 14
