1 University of San Diego Spring 2016 Italian Program - Department of Languages and Literatures Italian 301W: Advanced Writing & Composition Time and Place: MWF, 11:15-12:10, Olin Hall 330 Instructor & Office: Loredana Di Martino, FH 144A Office Hours: MW 12:20-2:50 and by appointment Course description: The objective of this course is to help you refine reading and writing skills while developing proficiency in Italian. We will discuss Niccolò Ammaniti s novel Io non ho paura as well as other written and audiovisual materials that deal with the main issues raised by the novel, and with important aspects of modern and contemporary Italy. Throughout the course, you will improve your knowledge of the Italian language and culture, while developing your ability to analyze and write about authentic texts. We will practice different types of writing (from descriptive and narrative, to analytic and argumentative), while reviewing advanced structures that will help you refine linguistic accuracy. Participation in class discussion and group work, including collaborative activities such as peer editing is a fundamental component of this course. Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to: Analyze and interpret different types of authentic texts, recognizing their meaning, rhetorical strategies, and cultural relevance. Discuss the texts and issues examined with clarity and fluidity of expression, and linguistic accuracy. Write papers in different modes that are structurally logical and coherent, and stylistically and linguistically appropriate. Show awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of their writing as assessed through the various stages of the writing and revision process, incorporation of instructor s and peers feedback, and the self-evaluations included in the writing folder. A good unabridged Italian dictionary (the following are available through on line sellers or at the bookstore: Harper Collins Sansoni, Garzanti Hazon, Oxford Paravia). NB: On-line Italian and Italian-English dictionaries such as the ones that can be found at or are a good tool to quickly look up new words, but the paper versions are more comprehensive and can better help you in your writing. Evaluation and Grade Breakdown: GRADING SCALE: A B D A C D B C D B C F 0-62 GRADING CRITERIA: Preparation & Participation: 10% Diario letterario [writing journal]: 15% Homework: 10% Compositions: 20% Quizzes: 20% Final paper: 20% Writing Folder: 5% Explanation of grading categories and other relevant information: ATTENDANCE: Attendance is fundamental in this class. You are allowed 3 unexcused absences. For each additional absence (after the third) your overall final grade for the class will be lowered one step on the grading scale (i.e. from B to B-, etc.). Official documentation must be provided in order for an absence to be excused. If you arrive late or leave early this will result in half an absence. PREPARATION & PARTICIPATION: Students must read/watch all assigned materials, with the aid of the vocabulary and study questions provided on Blackboard. They must be prepared to contribute actively to class discussion, and share their reflections every day. While/after reading, students should: 1) underline the most relevant information, 2) briefly answer the study questions provided on Blackboard (write the minimum to answer the question), 3) make a note of the points that are unclear and the questions that must be asked in class, 4) familiarize themselves with key vocabulary terms and phrases. NB: Students must always bring to class: the required reading materials, including the ones printed from Blackboard, and their answers to the assigned exercises. Materials from Blackboard (grammar, readings, study questions, glossaries of new terms, etc.) must be kept in a binder that 2

3 will serve as your notebook for the class. The professor may collect binders without prior notice. Reading Tip: As you are reading, do not expect to know every word that you encounter. Try to grasp the general meaning of sentences and paragraphs by using the vocabulary and answering the study questions provided on Blackboard. If you still have questions or doubts, write them down and ask them in class. This is part of the learning process. Laptops are allowed only if the instructor informs you that they are required on that day. If you use your phone or computer in class, this will impact your participation grade and your overall grade in the class. DIARIO LETTERARIO [writing journal]: This journal will consist of a series of short writing assignments based on your analysis of and/or critical reflection on the readings. Topics and guidelines will be available on Blackboard. You can rewrite these papers for extra practice but not for credit. These papers will be evaluated following the same guidelines as compositions and must be kept in the writing folder that each student will keep in the class (see below). 3

4 HOMEWORK: To improve linguistic accuracy students will review the assigned grammatical structures, and take and self-correct the assigned exercises on Blackboard. Grammar homework must be brought to class every day and students should ask questions on the points or exercises that were unclear. However, the self-corrected homework will be collected on quiz days. The answer keys are on Blackboard and you must correct your exercises with a pen of a different color. You will be graded in this way: A range: all exercises completed and self-corrected accurately, work does not seem rushed. B range: exercises completed and self-corrected almost always accurately, work does not seem rushed. C range: some exercises are not completed and/or not self-corrected accurately, work does not seem rushed. D range: several exercises are not complete and/or not self-corrected accurately, work seems a little rushed. F: most exercises are not completed and/or not self-corrected accurately, work seems a little rushed. COMPOSITIONS: You will write two compositions in multiple drafts, incorporating the comments that you will be provided. Analytical/argumentative papers must have references and a bibliography, which will follow the MLA formatting style. If you are not familiar with this style, you can ask a Copley librarian or visit this website: Topics and instructions will be provided on Blackboard. FINAL PAPER: Will be an essay (saggio) on one of the main topics studied during the semester, and must follow the same general guidelines as the other compositions. Topics and instructions will be provided on Blackboard. WRITING FOLDER: All writing assignments, including the short papers from il diario letterario and the multiple drafts from your compositions (temi e saggi), will be kept in a writing folder. You must review your previous work every time you write a new paper to develop an awareness of your streghts and weaknesses. The folder will be turned with the last version of your compositions and with your Saggio finale (3 times total) together with a self-evaluation in English or in Italian. General Guidelines for Writing Assignments: Writing assignments must follow the guidelines provided on Blackboard. Before turning in your papers, you are expected to check them for grammatical and mechanical errors both on your own and on the computers at Copley library, and final drafts must also incorporate previous drafts. All papers, including il diario letterario, will be included in the writing folder. NB: On Blackboard, in the Scrittura folder, you will find a list of writing tools and other important information on writing. Print and read those files before you write your compositions. Evaluation of compositions: will be based on content, form, and language: Content: Clarity of topic and thesis statement and of supportive argumentations; Development of the topic; Use of Evidence; Logic articulation of ideas into paragraphs, etc. Form: Division in paragraphs; Good introductions and conclusions; Use of Transitions between paragraphs; Footnotes and Bibliography using MLA format, etc. Language: Use of clear and well-articulated sentences (ex.: avoid short sentences: use connectives and relative pronouns); Use of pertinent vocabulary (i.e. related to the readings: from the glossaries or the dictionary); Correct use of grammar (ex.: agreements between subject and verb or noun and adjective, correct use of verbal tenses, etc.); Correct spelling (you can get the Office language pack 4

5 for Italian or check the spelling on the computers at Copley library); Correct use of Accents (Use the character map or the shortcuts from your keyboard); Punctuation, etc. QUIZZES: May include questions on the readings, grammar exercises, and/or writing. Make-ups will not be allowed. Policy on late assignments: Late work will not be accepted unless you have a valid written excuse such as a doctor s note. Academic integrity: You are expected to follow USD s policy on academic integrity: Please, note that getting substantial help from a native speaker or a tutor, using online translators, cutting and pasting paragraphs from different websites and handing in papers downloaded from the internet are all forms plagiarism.
