The first three courses of Italian in our program (101, 102, and 201) can be seen as one course divided into three semesters because they share some common goals and characteristics, and over the three semesters most of the basic structures of the Italian language are studied. By the end of Italian 201, students should be able to listen, speak, read, and write in the target language with the sufficient basic skill, vocabulary, accuracy, and cultural awareness to communicate their needs in everyday situations in a culturally appropriate way; likewise, they should demonstrate the ability to acquire additional linguistic competence on their own. Another primary objective of the language program is that students develop insight into their own language(s) and culture(s) by looking beyond their customary borders and Page 1 of 19

by examining their own relationship to other cultures so as to be able to participate more fully in the global community. In all sections of Italian 101, 102, and 201 the focus is on the development of students' proficiency in Italian. The concept of proficiency can be understood with the analogy of learning how to drive a car. Initially, the student must study the driving manual and then take a written exam. From there, he or she must actually get into the car and learn how to drive; this is the proficiency part, which means being able to actually drive the vehicle. In the Italian language course, the student is responsible for studying the grammar and completing all assignments before coming to class. Class time is then spent on practicing the structures already studied outside of class in order to improve students' proficiency, their actual ability to use Italian and carry out tasks in that language. The class is conducted entirely in Italian, and students are accountable for coming prepared and participating actively in all activities. Achieving greater proficiency in Italian can translate into a practical job skill for almost any profession, but, most importantly, learning another language is a personally enriching experience and a vital part of cultural understanding within a Liberal Arts education. Learning Outcomes for Italian 102 One aspect of language learning in which adults differ from children is the former s ability to consciously monitor their own progress. To assist you in this self-monitoring process, we have included LEARNING OUTCOMES for the FOUR SKILLS (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) as well as LINGUISTIC and CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE to be achieved by semester-end. Class will be conducted in Italian. Speaking: This ability is measured in the following components of the course: participation, homework, and oral presentations. Ask and respond to questions on the most common features of daily life through description and narration (sports and past times, Italian holidays and traditions, childhood memories, school and vacations, contemporary Italian social issues, etc.), satisfy a number of personal needs, and communicate with basic and formulaic expressions. Listening: This ability is assessed in the following components of the course: participation, homework, and exams (including the final). Discriminate among distinctive sounds in Italian, identify familiar words and categories of words in short and simple texts. Determine the general nature or tone of a text and identify main ideas. Reading: This ability is assessed in the following components of the course: participation, homework, pop quizzes, and exams (including the final). Recognize basic vocabulary, phrases, and cognates in simple authentic texts. Determine the general nature or tone of a text and identify main ideas. Writing: This ability is assessed in the following components of the course: participation, homework, compositions, and exams (including the final). Write paragraphs and short descriptive and narrative papers, using the structures and vocabulary learnt. Linguistic Knowledge: This knowledge is assessed in all components of the course. Basic grammar structures (presente, passato prossimo, imperfetto, trapassato, futuro, pronomi, etc.), and vocabulary for each of the thematic units. Page 2 of 19

Cultural knowledge: This knowledge is assessed in all components of the course. Knowledge acquired out of class through cultural activities will be assessed in various ways. Recognize and identify basic cultural elements from the Italian speaking world, including geography, lifestyle aspects, customs, and festivals, among others. Begin to understand that the culture is unique and not a translation of their own culture. Student responsibilities In order to achieve the learning goals for Italian 102, and reach the level of proficiency that is necessary to move on to Italian 201, you must study and interact with the language every day. You will be expected to work and turn in materials every day of the week even if your class only meets three times per week. Students are responsible for studying grammar and completing all assignments before coming to class. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they are expected to work on their own using the on-line learning system My Italian Lab. Daily assignments are clearly marked/posted on My Italian Lab and must be done by the deadline indicated. Class time is spent on practicing the structures already studied outside of class in order to improve students' proficiency, their actual ability to use Italian and carry out tasks in that language. All language skills are developed equally, but class time is dedicated primarily to the oral skills. The class is conducted entirely in Italian, and while there may be some brief clarifications, there are no lengthy grammar explanations. You will find detailed grammar explanations in your textbook and on its on-line component My Italian Lab, which contains grammar tutorials, flashcards, practice Tests and other helpful resources. Each class is relatively fast paced and contains multiple activities, including questions and answers, pair/group work, presentations, and role playing, among others. All students are accountable for consistently coming to class prepared and willing to actively participate in all activities. 5 5. On the Summary screen, confirm the information is correct and then click Enter Course Now to enter your instructor s course. For more information, read the Registration Instructions available on this website: Course components Attendance. It is very important that you attend every class meeting. Missing more than three classes will significantly impact your performance and lower your final grade in this course. For each individual absence after the third one, your final overall grade will be lowered one step on the grading scale (i.e. from B to B-, etc.). If you are sick, you need to provide a doctor s note that clearly states the absence date in order to have your absence excused. In the event that you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what material you have missed and any homework assignments. Late arrival or early departure from class will also result in an absence without a valid written excuse. Participation and Attitude. Participation is essential to language acquisition. In order for you to participate actively in class, you should study the appropriate material ahead of time. Here is how participation is calculated: A (range): Student was always well prepared for class (had studied the materials before coming to class), he/she was familiar with all new vocabulary and verbs, was always able to answer questions and participate in discussion, participated in class activities actively, used mostly Italian in class. B (range): Student was generally well prepared for class (had studied the materials before coming to class), he/she was generally familiar with new vocabulary and verbs, was mostly able to answer questions and participate in discussion, participated in class activities actively, used a limited amount of English in class. C (range): Student was not always well prepared for class (had not always studied before coming to class), he/she was sometimes unfamiliar with new vocabulary and verbs, and was not always able to answer questions and participate in discussion, did not always participate actively in class, often switched to English in class. D (range): Student was frequently unprepared for class (often had not studied before coming to class), he/she was often unfamiliar with new vocabulary and verbs, was often unable to answer questions and participate in discussion, did not participate actively in class activities, spoke English frequently in class. F: Student was mostly unprepared for class (usually had not studied before coming to class), he/she was unfamiliar with new vocabulary and verbs, was usually unable to answer questions and participate in discussion, did not participate actively or with the right attitude in class activities, generally spoke English in class. Homework: Assignments must always be completed by the beginning of class time (both on class days, MWF, and on off days, TTH), as it is indicated on the schedule and on My Italian Lab. Late homework will not accepted unless you have a valid written excuse such as a doctor s note. NB: Homework will help you prepare for class as well as for exams and quizzes. As a result, missing homework can significantly impact your performance in all aspects of the class. Oral Proficiency. The oral grade will be based on the quality of daily participation in oral discussion/activities and on two oral presentations. Presentation topics will be related to course content and cultural activities. Page 5 of 19

Writing: There will be several short and longer writing assignments. Temi are the longer writing assignments, and they will be turned in two drafts, both of which will be graded. In 102 one of your longer writing assignments is the review of an Italian film. This assignment is combined with one of your cultural activities. Assignments must be turned in on the due date in hard copy. Reading. Throughout the semester we will cover several readings from Percorsi and from the files provided on Blackboard and/or MY Italian Lab (Lettura). Some reading assignments must be typed, and will be collected and graded. Each time a reading is due, your instructor may also administer a short inclass pop quiz to verify reading comprehension. The reading grade will be based on the results from both the reading assignments and the pop quizzes. However, you will be tested on reading comprehension also on your exams, including the final. Cultural Activities. Inspired by a campus wide Integrated Learning Initiative, these activities encourage students to gain learning experience beyond the classroom. Throughout the semester you will attend at least 2 cultural activities on campus and/or in the community. For each additional activity after the 2 nd one, 1 point will be added to the participation grade (ex: 89 90, etc.). One activity must be done before the midterm and one after the midterm. One activity will be a conversation table (Tavola italiana), one an Italian film or can be chosen among the following: on or off campus lectures on Italian topics or other cultural events, Italian operas or music concerts, visits to Italian museum/art collections, participation in events organized by the Italian Cultural Center in Little Italy, the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles or the San Diego Italian Film Festival, repeated participation in Tavola italiana. You will be provided with a list of cultural activities. Every time you participate in an event other than the Tavola italiana, you will turn in a short reflection paper. All the Tavole italiane are in SLP in front of Tu Mercado. Quizzes. Quizzes will cover one or more chapters and include vocabulary and grammar. The dates are already marked on the schedule and NO make-up quizzes are allowed. Exams. Exams will cover two or more chapters. The dates are clearly marked on the schedule and NO make-up exams are allowed. Exams will include evaluation of all skills except speaking. Final Exam. The final exam is cumulative and will evaluate all skills, including cultural knowledge. Please do not book your flight home before the day of your final. It will be given only as scheduled. Tutoring Center: The Department of Languages and Literatures offers a free tutoring service. Tutors are faculty-recommended native speakers of the language or students enrolled in advanced courses. They receive training in order to provide you with the best help possible, so we encourage you to use the program if you feel that you need help outside of class. Please visit our website for complete information. Integrity of Scholarship: You are expected to follow the university policy on academic integrity. Please note that getting substantial help from a native speaker, using online translators, cutting and pasting paragraphs from different websites and handing in papers downloaded from the internet are all forms plagiarism. For more information, see the USD Undergraduate Bulletin, Academic Regulations, p ) or p. 75 ( ). * AND ANNOUNCEMENTS. STUDENTS MUST CHECK THEIR AND THE CLASS BLACKBOARD TEMPLATE EVERY DAY FOR IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS. Page 6 of 19

Programma Schedule Spring 2014 All work is assigned on the date in which it is due, and it is always due before coming to class, every day of the week (including T and TH). This means that you will study the new materials and complete all the assigned homework on your own the night before they are due (or, at the latest, before coming to class). In class you will be asked to apply the new structures in communicative and cultural tasks. Indicates what you must study from the Percorsi textbook and/or from the files posted on MIL or on Blackboard before coming to class. Study all materials on those pages, including Occhio alla lingua!, Così si dice, and Lo sai che? Vocabulary, In Contesto dialogues, etc. Vocabulary and Assignments from Percorsi marked with the headphones logo have an audio recording on MIL. You must listen to the recordings for the In-Text audio as you read or study the assigned pages in order to practice pronunciation. To listen to the files go to MIL, click on the -ebook- (top right) and go to the correct page (same as paper textbook). Indicates both the homework related to the assigned pages from Percorsi and other types of assignments (readings, compositions, etc.). Homework comes from MIL=My Italian lab, from Percorsi=textbook or from B=Blackboard. Access Blackboard at: Homework from Percorsi and Blackboard: must be done on a separate piece of paper and it may be collected.
