2 CEAB - CENTRE D ESTUDIS AVANÇATS DE BLANES GIRONA SPAGNA Progetto n. 1: Work will be carried out in the Spanish R+D+I project PLAYA+ (exploring beach resilience in a global change process: risks and opportunities). PLAYA+ is aimed to analyse which governance mechanisms and social activities are necessary to ensure beach resilience and its social value within a global change process of erosion and economic development. Work will be carried out during the bathing season to: a) quantify direct expenditure values of tourist by beach surveys and tourist counting measures and b) assess the potential risk that exist in our beaches to prioritize further actions, aimed to develop a new integrated beach management system for them. 1/2 4/6 Da Aprile Progetto n. 2: A graduate student is welcomed to our lab to help setting and running mesocosm experiments with stream biofilms and freshwater macrophytes. The aim of the study is to evaluate the nutrient retention efficiency of different stream biofilms and vegetated fibber rolls used in stream restauration actions. The job will mainly consist on collecting sediments and cobbles from different streams, and running incubations in mesocosms in the lab under different nutrient concentrations. 7 MONASH UNIVERSITY School of Biological Sciences CLAYTON AUSTRALIA Phytoplankton are responsible for supporting most marine food chains, and their ecological performance is likely to be strongly affected by their environment, including global change. This position would involve the student working on a range of problems associated with the control of growth and physiological parameters of microalgae by environmental factors such as light, nutrient availability and rising CO 2. 8 NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MARINE BIOLOGY AND AQUARIUM CHECHENG TAIWAN Progetto n. 1: Coral-dinoflagellate endosymbiosis The cellular and molecular mechanism of Cnidarian-dinoflagellate endosymbiosis, an intriguing field studying the mutualistic interactions between coral host and their symbiont (microalgae cell). The goal of Dr. Peng s research is to exploring the molecular base and regulating mechanism of endosymbiosis and has published severals key papers including the proteomic analysis of symbiosome membrane, ultrastructural and proteomic study of coral lipid bodies, and assessment of metabolic modulation in freeliving versus endosymbiotic Symbiodidium. Currently Dr. Peng s researches not only focus on the proteomic analysis of simbiosi-related subcellular organelles, symbiont, molecular and ultrastructural study of metabolic regulation between host and their symbiont, but also the recognition mechanism between cnidarian hosts and their symbiont. 2 3/6 Da Marzo alloggio a carico dell ente mensa Progetto n. 2: Coral cryopreservation and conservation Elevated ocean temperature and acidity, disease risks, human destruction and pollution all result in massive damage to coral reefs and it can take a very long time for the reefs to recover. The exsitu conservation method of cryopreservation is essential in the reduction of genetic drift, the creation of gene banks and the possible in-vitro fertilization of coral germ cells to reduce their decline. We would prefer a knowledge of molecular techniques but the projects are not restricted to this field. Progetto n. 2: 2 6 Da definire - In the field of marine mammals. A new project will be assisting with the heavy metals/pathology project on dolphins in Spencer Gulf. A study of gross bone pathology of Delphinus delphis is required for this project and has not yet been undertaken. This will involve describing and analysing the skeletons of dolphins. Both clinical and laboratory based experimental techniques are employed to explore the mechanisms of inflammation and repair. 14 UNIVERSITY OF SUNSHINE COAST QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA Progetto 2: NOVEL INSIGHTS INTO DEVELOPMENT, MASCULINITY AND METABOLISM THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE TRANSCRIPTOME OF THE EASTERN ROCK LOBSTER Sagmariasus verreauxi. We have established a comprehensive transcriptomic database of the Eastern rock lobster Sagmariasus verreuxi. This database contains annotated information of transcripts sequenced from developmental stages throughout metamorphosis as well as adult tissues. Using digital gene expression we obtained an estimation of the quantity of each transcript in each stage/tissue. This enables us to highlight stage- and tissue-specific expression of an array of newly identified genes, as well as annotated ones. Our research focuses on characterising peptide hormones which hold great commercial merit in crustacean aquaculture. Among these are insulins that were not identified in crustaceans previously. We use phylogenetics analysis and molecular techniques to localise these factors, combined with gene silencing to devise functionality. Successfull candidates will need to be proficient in molecular techniques including: PCR, in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry. 15 UNIVERSITY OF SUNSHINE COAST Progetto 3: Chlamydia research 1 3/6 Da definire QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA 1 - Monitoring Chlamydia pecorum shedding in Australian sheep: Chlamydia pecorum is an economically important pathogen of Australian sheep. This project will use qpcr-based methods to monitor the longitudinal shedding of this organism in an Australian lamb flock over time to understand the impact of these infections on lamb growth and health. 2 -Chlamydial diversity in Australian wildlife: The diversity of chlamydial infections in Australian wildlife is virtually unknown and has implications for our understanding of the impact of these infections on animal health and the origin and evolution of this pathogen. This project will take a PCR-based approach to screen and identify chlamydial infections from a range of native Australian species. 3 - Molecular epidemiology of Chlamydia-like organisms on women s health: Chlamydia-like organisms are emerging pathogens associated with a range of human health conditions. This project will utilise broad-range PCR-based approaches to screen and identify Chlamydialike organisms in samples collected from women with reproductive disease. 16 UNIVERSITY OF SUNSHINE COAST QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA Progetto 4: Genetic research in aquaculture species The aquaculture genetic group is working with key aquaculture species in Australia and internationaly to develop and maintian sustainable genetic programs for finfish, oysters, and crusteaceans. Students who join the group could be working on the development of new DNA markers, identification of sex specific markers using genomics, quantitative genetics, and development and application of tools for the assessment of performance such as disease resistence, growth, flesh quality etc. Students should have molecular experience (at least PCR) and good afinity with statistics. Progetto 5 Aquaculture biotechnology research The aquaculture biotechnology group research covers aspects of reproductive physiology of fish, oysters and crusteanceans, with an emphasis on genes involved in the endocrine reproductive process, identification of peptides that control pubertal development of spawning, and development of oral drug delivery systems and bioassays to assess thier impact. Students should have basic molecular experience, or experience in physiolgy or histology.
