5 BCCI - Welcome by John J. Law The British Chamber of Commerce for Italy (BCCI) is a private non-profi t association of some 400 members which was founded in Genoa in With headquarters in Milan and regional branches operating throughout the country, we pride ourselves on our heritage as the point of reference for the English speaking business community in Italy. John J. Law President of the British Chamber of Commerce for Italy John is a Managing Director & Chief Risk Offi cer of HSBC Bank plc in Italy. He has been a banker for some 32 years, the last 19 of which have been spent in Italy. As we go to print with this year s Focus, we fi nd ourselves at a critical moment after what has been a challenging year. Without wishing to oversimplify the scale or complexity of the problems facing us all, I want in this year s introduction to Focus to look at growth, the one issue where some sort of consensus is possible. Many commentators agree that growth is the solution, the alchemist s formula which will make all manner of things be well. José Manuel Barroso himself has highlighted that we all have a shared responsibility to provide solutions a quotation I have shamelessly lifted from HM Government s Let s Choose Growth publication as it neatly captures the imperative which I would like to be at the centre of the BCCI s activities this year and next. Growth! Strong and sustainable growth. There are two key areas where we can seek to live up to our responsibility here. The fi rst is Partnership. As many of you know, the BCCI this year won COBCOE s annual Award for Partnership Development given the importance the Chamber places on this core value, it is something of which we are very proud and which we will strive to develop further. This means: Listening to our members to ensure that we are adapting to their changing needs and offering events and services which have practical commercial relevance for them and which help them raise their commercial profi le. Developing the excellent relationship we have established with UKTI and the British Embassy in Rome and working with them to expand and develop their important Growth programme and to bring its benefi ts to as many of our members as possible. Looking for new ways to collaborate with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in the UK the Keynes Sraffa Award which we last year presented to Emma Marcegaglia and Helen Bishop (the Heads of Italy s Confi ndustria and the UK s CBI) at the Villa Wolkonsky in Rome is a fi ne example of the sort of thing we can do together to encourage co-operation and exchange between our two countries. This year the award will be presented in London to Pier Francesco Guarguaglini (President of Finmeccanica) and Ian King (CEO of BAE Systems). We should look to bring this spirit of co-operation to other Chambers of Commerce and trade organisations. Extending our reach throughout Italy by growing our membership base. The second is Mood. This might seem banal, but a positive mood is a crucial driver of growth and whilst we don t underestimate the diffi culty of breaking out of a cycle of gloom, it is worth considering Abraham Lincoln s statement most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be. We aim to help with this decision and would encourage you to join us at the many and varied events which we organise each year. A key focal point are our networking events, particularly our monthly business lunches where we have been informed and entertained by a wide range of high quality speakers. I would also like to single out two highly successful events organised by our Regional Secretaries in Puglia (featured on Page 31) and Piemonte. Guido Vasapolli s triumph in organising a series of round table talks in Turin at which 12 world class entrepreneurs shared their deeply personal experiences of success and failure in business was rewarded by his fi rm, Vasapolli & Associati, winning the LEA Award 2011 Innovative Firm of the Year. Helping our members succeed in this way is one of the many things we can do together to inculcate the positive outlook that is required to hasten the return to growth and prosperity. I d like to thank our members, staff and Councillors for their energy and enthusiasm in 2011 and I look forward to working with you closely in the coming year. 3

6 BCCI - Presentation The British Chamber of Commerce for Italy The BCCI is a private, non profi t making entity that works closely with the British Consulate General in Milan and with the British Embassy in Rome. The BCCI represents in Italy the interests of the Confederation of British Industries and the British Standards Institute. It also maintains ties in Great Britain with the Department of Trade and Industry, with the Association of British Chambers of Commerce and throughout Europe with COBCOE, the Council of British Chambers of Commerce in Europe. The BCCI was founded in 1904 in Genoa but today its headquarters are in Milan. Regional branches of the Chamber are operative throughout Italy and there is also a Secretary in London. The Chamber has about 400 Members, for the most part Italian and British companies, including branches of British businesses operating in Italy, Italian companies that have trade relations with the United Kingdom, service providers and professional consultants. We believe that the Chamber s fundamental mission is to serve our Members well, remembering at all times that, besides being Members, they are our main source of financial support. We anticipate their needs and do our utmost to satisfy them, by providing a service of excellent quality and value. Our Objectives The BCCI s objectives can be summarized as follows: to serve as a point of reference for British commercial interests in Italy and to provide congenial meeting opportunities for business men and women, particularly British and Italian; to provide services and advice to both private individuals and companies, who may not necessarily be Chamber Members but who intend to start a business activity in the UK or in Italy; to support the British export development activities of departments of the Foreign and Commonwealth Offi ce (FCO) with a view to facilitating trade between Italy and the United Kingdom; to offer Members a full range of services in the areas of trade, business promotion and both business and social networking; to encourage Italians to study English in Great Britain and other English speaking countries throughout the world, taking advantage of the services offered by the English Language Consultancy Service (ELCS); to promote specialized language learning (commercial and legal), through the International Professional English Certifi cate (IPEC). Britaly is the Chamber s monthly newsletter, which is sent via to over 1,200 addresses. The newsletter contains a full listing of Chamber future events and news as well as information concerning BCCI Members. Currently the basic IPEC examinations are offered at three of the levels established by the Council of Europe: Entry (Threshold B1 Level), Executive (Vantage B2 Level), and Excellence (Effective Profi ciency C1 level), while the Legal English Module which was developed in collaboration with Milan s Just Legal Services is offered at B2 and C1 levels, and is recognised as an external qualifi cation for the degree course in law The new BCCI IPEC leaflet As IPEC centres are already aware, 2011 saw the introduction of the new BCCI IPEC leafl et. This new leafl et has been designed to echo the style of the revamped BCCI website and the recently redesigned ELCS leafl et, thereby providing a stronger corporate identity for our language services. The contents have been streamlined and simplifi ed, providing a rapid overview of the levels and areas covered by the current suite of IPEC examinations, and referring those who seek more detailed syllabus information to our website. In 2006 this was joined by the Environmental English Module and the Enological English Module for sommeliers, while our latest modules, developed in response to the needs which will be created by Milan s Expo, include English for Policing, English for Doctors, and English for Paramedics. The examinations are recognised as crediti formativi in Italy, and are also used or recognised as credits by several other important Italian universities.
