5 IL PRINCIPIO FISICO delle fasce di Van Allen Il campo magnetico della terra non solo ci permette di orientarci con la bussola, ma contribuisce a tenere lontano da noi l intenso flusso di radiazione cosmica, particelle cariche (protoni, elettroni) che bombardano la terra, intrappolandole in zone (fasce) al di fuori dell atmosfera

34 Conclusion (1) INFN, with a very modest incremental investment (but using technology from the Wizard/SilEye-MePHI, and AMS-01/02 programs) gained precious experience for capability to completely design, build, test, operate a space experiment interfacing with ESA, Roscosmos and NASA without industrial involvment New infrastructure (Mission Control Center in Tor Vergata, to be reused for PAMELA) New personnel training On engineering, QA, testing, LNF work on Moscow for the AT SERMS Laboratory at Terni

35 Conclusion (2) All of this in less than 6 months (August 2004-january 2005) with a tremendous enthousiasm by the people involved About the Science: INFN has now in orbit a system of detectors LAZIO-SiRad + Sileye which can correlate particle rate and pitch fluctuations with low frequency magnetic field fluctuations. It is the only such a system in orbit other than the 20 M Demeter satellite (F). The extension of the mission to a total of 12 months has been agreed and we expect data taking to resume very soon. Although we are inside the ISS, we will be able to test the algorithms in view of a dedicate microsatellite mission, and, if we are lucky, may be also to perform good science.
