1 LEARNERS IDEAS FOR TEACHING Learner generated and inspired learning materials/ideas from the learners perspective Cumbernauld College, Scotland - 19th & 20th November 2012

2 In considering the task of creating a project to improve the language learning skills of immigrants, we first identified what we observe to be one of the primary needs and biggest obstacles in learning a foreign language, which is having the confidence to speak without embarrassment and fear. We discussed the fact that adult learners of foreign countries feel more comfortable around children because there is less peer pressure and less fear of failure. Adult learners of a foreign language are on a much closer level educationally to children then to other adults.

3 Ching Yi told us about her experience in France with the children of an elementary school. It was a project where the immigrants went into the classroom to share their culture with the children in diverse ways, some being their arts, music, way of dress, food, etc. This created a platform for the children and the immigrants to interact in a free and spontaneous way in both speaking and body language. In this way the immigrants gain primarily through contextual learning as they observed and listened to the children interacting with one and another and with them. The result was a relaxed opportunity for the immigrants to also practise their speaking abilities. In exchange, the children gained knowledge of various cultures in a real and hands on way.

4 It was agreed that this approach could be very effective and practical in Palermo. The first step would be to present the project to the immigrants securing their willingness to participate. Secondly, elementary schools and their classroom teachers who are willing to participate would be secured. Thirdly, a simple outline would be drawn up between the elementary school teacher and language instructor as to which topics would be utilized in the classroom. Finally immigrants would be presented the outline and asked to create and provide the ideas and resources to present to children.

5 The beauty of this project lies in its simplicity, spontaneity and natural love of and desire for learning in both children and adults, thus requiring no government funds or resources and no taxing efforts for instructors. The adult and children learners alike reap the benefits.

6 Abbiamo identificato il bisogno degli immigranti adulti, per obttenere la fiducia in loro stessi di parlare senza vergogna. Abbiamo parlato il fatto che gli studenti stranieri si sentono piu` commodi insiemi con i bambini, perche` non c e` peer-presure e meno paura di sbagliarsi. Gli studenti stranieri, a livello di linguaggio, iniziano come i bambini.

7 Da quel punto, Ching yi ci ha raccontato la sua esperienza di partecipare in una collaborazione con i bambini di una scuola elementari. E` stato un progetto di condivisione culturale cioe` c erano 10 studenti stranieri da diversi paesi, quindi ciascuno ha proposito di condividere la sua cultura con i bambini francesi. Prima di tutto, gli insegnati tra le due scuole hanno communicato i dettagli in cui gli studenti stranieri e i bambini francesi che propositono il loro idée per questo incontro. Il prima incontro e` stato molto accogliente e rilassante in cui gli studenti stranieri hanno anticipato ai bambini le cose che propogono per il prossimo incontro. Poi la seconda volta, una Taiwanese ha insegnato la caligrofia in mandarino cinese semplificato ed un altra raggazza giapponese con i origami giapponese, e con la raggazza Africana sinegalese, abbiamo ballato insieme tutti quanti la danza Africana e un raggazzo italiano con una ghitara insegnava un canzone italiano...etc. Alla fine di ogni incontro abbiamo degustato insiemi i dolci tipici che i bambini francesi hanno preparato.

8 Alla fine di questo progetto i bambini francesi hanno fatto un portale per ogni persona come un piccolo ringraziamento e con una cartolina scritta con le cose che hanno imparat dalle diverse culture. Ching Yi racconta che per loro e` stato una esperienza indimendicabile e hanno preso piu` confidenza di parlare con i pubblici e hanno conosciuto di piu` la cultura francese e il linguaggio che si usano nella loro famiglia quotidiana.

9 Sara` un idea molto effetuoso e pratica per gli student stranieri a realizzare a Palermo. Prima di tutto e` di proporre questo progetto agli studenti stranieri e le scuole elementare che hanno la volonta` a partecipare in questo progetto. Poi communicano tra di loro i quali instrumenti e i topici che si utilizzano per questo progetto.
