Pagina 2 di 4 24/05/2012 Creata nel 2006 da Paolo Bray, FOS nasce dal successo e dai risultati tangibili ottenuti dal progetto Dolphin- Safe dell'earth Island Institute ( NGO no-profit internazionale, con sede a San Francisco (USA), di cui Paolo Bray è Direttore in Europa. FOS è l'unico schema che certifica, con medesimo logo di approvazione, sia i prodotti della pesca che quelli dell'acquacoltura sempre che il metodo di produzione risponda a rigidi criteri di sostenibilità, segue le Linee Guida della FAO. Enti di certificazione internazionale, quali ad esempio Bureau Veritas, CSQA, RINA ed SGS verificano in maniera indipendente, attraverso anche un'ispezione in situ, la conformità ai criteri di certificazione sostenibile Friend of the Sea. Per i prodotti da acquacoltura, si prevedono tra gli altri, severi monitoraggi della qualità delle acque, la prevenzione delle fughe di pesce, limiti nella possibilità di fughe, il non utilizzo di OGM od ormoni della crescita, la gestione dei rifiuti e l'impatto dei mangimi. L'auditor valuta l'impatto del sito produttivo sugli habitat critici (mangrovie, zone umide, ecc) ed il rispetto della normativa sui parametri delle acque. Per la certificazione di prodotti della pesca, gli stessi devono originare da stock/popolazioni non sovrasfruttate (in base alle valutazioni della FAO e degli organismi competenti) ed essere pescati con metodi selettivi (basso livello di prese accidentali e scarti) e senza impatto sul fondale. Le aziende produttrici vengono inoltre valutate per la loro responsabilità sociale nei confronti degli operatori della pesca e dei dipendenti degli impianti di trasformazione. Oltre 200 aziende di produzione e distribuzione in 50 Paesi nel mondo, si sono rivolti a FOS per la valutazione della sostenibilità dei loro prodotti. Flotte artigianali ed industriali, piccoli e grandi impianti di acquacoltura, nei cinque continenti, sono stati auditati approvati e, se conformi ai requisiti, certificati Friend of the Sea. Solo il 40% circa delle origini sottoposte ad audit hanno passato il test e sono state certificate. Tra questi alcuni nomi importanti nel mondo della produzione ittica e Omega-3 internazionale: Omega Protein, Marine Harvest, Norway Prawns, Calvo, Frinsa, Toralla, Gomes da Costa, Seacold, Clean Seas, Raptis. Fra i produttori italiani certificati: Agroittica Lombarda (principale produttore mondiale di caviale da storione allevato); Astro (trote del Trentino); Caviale Srl (Caviale); Delicius(acciughe); COAM (marchioscandia, salmone); Fjord (salmone da Scozia e Norvegia); Generale Conserve(marchio As do Mar di tonno e sgombro); L'Isola d'oro (acciughe); Panapesca(vongole e surgelati vari); Rizzoli Emanuelli (sgombro e sardine); Società Agricola Sterpo (trote). Da alcuni anni anche la Grande Distribuzione si è sensibilizzata ed ha richiesto gli audit Friend of the Sea dei loro prodotti private-label. In Italia, sia Coop, Conad che Esselunga. Study says Friend of the Sea is best aquaculture standard 11 Jan 2012 A new study by the University of Victoria s Seafood Ecology Research Group has said that Friend of the Sea s Absolute Performance Score was better than all major sustainable aquaculture schemes operating at an international level. Friend of the Sea scored higher than Global GAP, Global Aquaculture Alliance, AquaGAP and some bio standards (Bio Suisse, Australia Certified Organic) and retailer standards (Whole Foods Market and Marks & Spencer). The study, How Green is Your Ecolabel. Comparing the environmental benefits of marine aquaculture standards, also concluded that Friend of the Sea s standards are driving more change than Naturland, BioSuisse, GAA, Label Rouge and Marks & Spencer. When all standards where compared according to their requirements for salmon aquaculture, Friend of the Sea scored second only to the Soil Association. Dr Paolo Bray, director of Friend of the Sea said, Some bio standards are more restrictive on animal welfare and nutritional aspects but as a consequence they might increase environmental impact and prevent achievement of sustainability. While it is clear that 'bio' is not a valid alternative to 'sustainability', we are proud that our standard has often scored better than most of the major bio standards. In particular, salmon standards, according to this study, perform even better than Naturland. This is one more evidence of the reliability of Friend of the Sea standards. The international aquaculture industry has already appreciated the important added value provided by FOS certification as we have certified almost five times the amount of aquaculture production certified by all the bio standards worldwide. The study assessed 20 aquaculture certification standards, but only 18 of them have actually already been used during audits, as the US National Organic Standard and Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue were only draft proposal at the time of the study. Also, some of them are only specific for one species or implemented only at a single nation level. The final report uses well-established methodology, refined by the 2010 Global Aquaculture Performance Index (GAPI), to determine numerical scores of environmental performance. This study acts as a kind of Michelin guide for standards. The long-term objective is to help stakeholders understand how standards as a whole are contributing to the ultimate goal of a more sustainable marine aquaculture industry. In one fishing trip alone the crew had killed over 5000 sharks for fins, among which were endangered ones. The Korean multinational officially explained that shark business is only the procedure and a source to support crew s income. Finally, on the 1st of February 2012, ISSF introduced a Shark Fin ban measure which requests that by September 2012, processors, traders, importers, transporters and others involved in the seafood industry, must refrain from transactions with vessels that carry out shark finning or with vessel owning companies that do not have a public policy prohibiting shark finning. While this represents a very important achievement for Friend of the Sea said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea only independent monitoring of the Korean vessels to verify compliance with the ban and humane treatment of the crew will confirm the change. We applaude ISSF s initiative, which took into consideration the Friend of the Sea request and which will hopefully save hundreds of thousands of sharks from wasteful killing practices. (Photo: Stock File) Friend of the Sea harshly criticises Dongwon, Starkist WORLDWIDE Wednesday, March 28, 2012, 22:50 (GMT + 9) Friend of the Sea sent a public letter to Dongwon Industries CEO In-Soo Cho this week regarding the company s shark fishing practices. The sustainable seafood certification group accused Dongwon and Starkist, two of the globe s major tuna companies, of collecting up to approximately 1.5 tonnes of dried shark fins on every trip made by their vessels. This is equivalent to 5,000 or more sharks killed for their fins on every fishing trip. Friend of the Sea Director Paolo Bray cited data from the Inter American Tropical Tuna Commission s (IATTC) observer report of transshipment, and noted that several of the killed sharks were included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) redlist. He pointed out that the official IATTC document Dongwon sent Friend of the Sea had been falsified by Dongwon and did not show shark carcasses. Click here to enlarge The last letter sent by Dongwon was in late December, when executive director Jong Koo Lee explained the company s rationale. Shark Business is not the company s interest, but it is only the procedure and one for sources of supporting crew s income. We think that we should consider the seamen who do hard work at sea for about a year away from their families, he wrote. Bray responded in his letter by highlighting that forcing crew for a year out at sea is in infringement with the Maritime Labour Convention of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). He also stressed that the companies shark finning practice is in infringement with US Shark Conservation Act 2010, which mandates that fins be landed naturally attached to their corresponding carcass. He further affirmed that customers would not be pleased to learn that the companies are compensating their crew s salary by allowing them to fin thousands of sharks. What would consumers do if they knew that Starkist tuna lower price is compensated by your shark fins trade? What will your customers in the seafood industry and retail do now that they are aware of your practices? he questioned. Compra con coscienza parte 1 giovedì 5 aprile 2012 di Andrea Ventura La scelta del prodotto da acquistare è un processo che può interessare diverse aree del nostro cervello ed essere più o meno complesso. C è chi fa acquisti in modo razionale e chi segue l istinto, quindi sceglie su base emotiva. C è chi si fida del parere di un esperto o del venditore, chi fa ricerche sul web e ascquista a colpo sicuro. Chi sceglie in base alle immagini sulla confezione del prodotto e chi legge accuratamente l etichetta, spesso con parecchie difficoltà viste le dimensioni dei caratteri ridotte e la presenza di mille loghi di cui si sconosce il significato. Io, in genere, scelgo razionalmente i prodotti che compro. Anche quando l acquisto è razionale non sempre ho tutte le informazioni necessarie alla migliore scelta. Spesso ignoro totalmente le questioni etiche riguardanti l acquisto di alcuni beni. Non sapevo per esempio che la maggior parte di jeans sabbiati, scoloriti, viene prodotta al costo di vite umane degli operatori alla sabbiatura, e quando l ho scoperto ne aveva già parecchi nell armadio. L etichetta e i loghi in essa contenuti dovrebbero guidarci verso il miglior acquisto, anche dal punto di vista etico. Ecco qui di seguito alcuni dei simboli che dovremmo considerare e apprezzare al momento della scelta sull acquisto di un prodotto piuttosto che un altro Agricoltura Biologica. Il logo istituito dall Unione Europea dà ai consumatori la sicurezza riguardo l origine e la qualità degli alimenti e delle bevande. La presenza del logo sui prodotti assicura inoltre che la coltivazione o l allevamento delle materie prime avvengano nel rispetto della biodiversità, con il rispetto delle risorse naturali e l assenza di OGM (organismi geneticamente modificati). Energy Label. È il marchio che possiamo consultare prima dell acquisto di un elettrodomestico e che indica l efficienza energetica, ma che a seconda del prodotto può riportare informazioni aggiuntive, come i lumen di una lampadina o l efficienza nel consumo di acqua e la rumorosità per una lavastoviglie. Lo sapevate che è in arrivo l etichetta energy label per gli pneumatici che indica la classe energetica, il comportamento sul bagnato e la rumorosità di ogni gomma? Energy Star. Il marchio promosso dall Unione Europea volto a segnalare le apparecchiature per ufficio alimentate elettricamente che risultano energeticamente efficienti e che pertanto permettono un maggior risparmio di energia. Il marchio lo possiamo vedere quando accendiamo un PC energicamente efficiente. Friend of the Sea. Il logo che prende nome dall omonima organizzazione non governativa no-profit che ha per scopo quello di tutelare l habitat marino. Il marchio certifica che, in accordo con il codice di condotta per la pesca

Il logo MSC. Nato dal Marine Stewardship Council, un organizzazione no profit per la pesca sostenibile, che certifica il raggiungimento di un insieme di standard per la sostenibilità dei processi di pesca stabiliti da un team di esperti indipendenti sia dall MSC e dall industria ittica. La questione è sia ambientale che socio-economica. Con la sparizione progressiva di alcune specie migliaia di pescatori hanno già perso il lavoro. Dolphin Safe. È uno dei marchi che certifica l applicazione di sistemi di pesca non nocivi per i delfini che infatti rimangono spesso intrappolati nelle reti per la pesca al tonno, motivo per cui questo simbolo o altri simili vengono riportati sulle scatolette di tonno. Esistono altri marchi, più o meno seri, alcuni di questi cercano solo di rassicurare il consumatore circa l assenza di carne di delfino finito erroneamente in scatola. FSC. Forest Stewarship Council, l organizzazione non governativa che lo ha fondato, mira alla salvaguardia delle foreste non solo dal punto di vista ambientale, ma anche da quello sociale ed economico (come per l MSC). Si può trovare sui prodotti derivati dal legno, quindi anche su carta e resine, provenienti da imprese che gestiscono le foreste in modo responsabile e corretto. Stop ai test sugli animali. Il logo creato dalle maggiori organizzazioni animaliste guidate dalla Coalizione europea contro la vivisezione, di cui fa parte l italiana LAV, serve ad etichettare i prodotti cosmetici che non prevedono la sperimentazione sugli animali, favorendo così la scelta da parte del consumatori di marchi che adottano una politica aziendale cruelty free, ossia libera da crudeltà sugli animali. Fair Trade. Il marchio di garanzia del Commercio Equo e Solidale garantisce che i prodotti con il suo simbolo siano stati lavorati senza causare sfruttamento e povertà nel Sud del mondo e siano stati acquistati secondo i criteri del Commercio Equo e Solidale. Possiamo trovare il logo soprattutto su confezioni di cioccolato, cacao, tè, caffè e tutti i prodotti provenienti dalle regioni più povere del nostro pianeta. Oeko-Tex Standard 100. Marchio che attesta l assenza di sostanze nocive sui tessuti. Il logo con la farfalla al posto della margherita è invece quello che certifica il raggiungimento dell Oeko-Tex Standard 1000, i siti produttivi durante la catena tessile devono adempiere a criteri di produzione eco-compatibili.in particolare lo standard vieta ausiliari e coloranti dannosi per l ambiente, il lavoro minorile e impone il trattamento delle acque di scarico e delle emissioni, l ottimizzazione del consumo energetico, la sicurezza sul posto di lavoro, la riduzione di rumore e polvere, elementi base di un sistema di gestione ambientale. L unione dello standard 100 e 1000 diventa l Oeko-Tex Standard 100 plus. - Radura. A cosa pensate quando vedete questo logo? Natura? Sole al tramonto? Questo logo è uno di quei loghi che minano l utilità dei precedenti loghi. Se ne vedono tanti in giro, loghi con delfini che vengono confusi per il Dolphin Safe, ma che non assicurano la salvezza dei delfini dalle reti da pesca, simboli con un richiamo al naturale su prodotti che di naturale hanno ben poco. In questo caso il simbolo a destra rappresenta un ortaggio irradiato, un processo di sterilizzazione che attraverso raggi gamma, raggi X o elettroni uccide virus, batteri ed insetti. Questo processo ha suscitato non poche polemiche sia riguardo la sicurezza ambientale che quella dei consumatori. Nonostante i test condotti da più di mezzo secolo di sperimentazioni, misteriosi incidenti e polveroni inclusi, gruppi di esperti affermano che non ci sono prove a sufficienza per affermare che il
