2 Piazza San Silvestro is a central location in Rome, just a short walk from the Trevi fountain and from Trinità dei Monti. After World War II, it became the terminal for buses and trams that connected the city centre with the capital s various suburban districts. A place of traffic for public transport, which had lost almost all architectural value, in addition to its value as a square, to be intended as a meeting place, a place of relationships. Piazza San Silvestro è un luogo centrale di Roma a due passi da fontana di Trevi e da Trinità dei Monti. Dal dopoguerra è stata capolinea delle linee di autobus e filobus che univano il centro con i vari quartieri periferici della capitale. Un luogo di traffico per il trasporto pubblico, che aveva perduto qualsiasi valenza architettonica e di piazza intesa come luogo di incontro e di relazione. 5 In 2011 a decision was made to close the square to vehicle traffic, turn it into a pedestrian area and requalify the area according to a project by architect Paolo Portoghesi, who justified his choices by saying: Rome is a peculiar city, its beauty is the abundance of squares. We divided the new square into two parts: the first is rectangular, aligned with the church of San Silvestro a true churchyard. The second part is elliptical, to separate a pedestrian section from all the rest. Nel 2011 è stata decisa la chiusura della piazza al traffico, la sua pedonalizzazione e riqualificazione su progetto dell architetto Paolo Portoghesi che motiva così le sue scelte: Roma è una città particolare, la sua bellezza è l abbondanza delle piazze. Abbiamo diviso la nuova piazza in due parti; la prima rettangolare, in asse con la chiesa di San Silvestro, un vero e proprio sagrato, e la seconda ellittica, per isolare da tutto il resto un recinto pedonale. 7 The oval part, typical of the cityscape, is marked off by four travertine benches, respecting the concept of a theatre-square a place seen as a meeting place between people. The objective was to bring the project closer to the identity of the city, in hopes that Piazza San Silvestro could become what Piazza Colonna was at the beginning of the century. La parte ovale, tipica dell urbanistica della città, è delimitata da quattro panchine in travertino per rispettare il concetto di piazza-teatro, cioè di luogo dedicato all incontro della gente. L obiettivo è stato quello di riportare il progetto verso l identità della città, con l augurio che piazza San Silvestro sostituisca quello che era stata piazza Colonna a inizio del secolo. 9 Neri participated in the lighting and furnishing project for the piazza, in collaboration with Acea, with posts from the Heka series and Light 804 luminaires, which were positioned in the central part of the square. Neri ha partecipato al progetto di illuminazione e arredo della piazza, in collaborazione con Acea, impiegando i pali della serie Heka e la lanterna Light 804 che sono stati collocati nella parte centrale della piazza. 21 On the sides of the square, in front of Palazzo delle Poste, the street is reserved for taxis and was lit with Heka system posts and a bespoke luminaire, the shape of which is similar to the classic suspended lighting that has lit the city of Rome for decades. Ai lati della piazza, di fronte al Palazzo delle Poste, la via è riservata ai taxi ed è stata illuminata con i pali del sistema Heka e un corpo illuminante custom la cui forma richiama la classica sospensione che da decenni illumina la città di Roma. 23 The same lamp post was also used to light the opposite part, in front of the church of San Claudio, in the Piazza with the same name, which has greater lighting requirements due to the cars and buses in transit. Lo stesso palo è stato utilizzato anche per illuminare la parte opposta, di fronte alla chiesa di San Claudio, nell omonima piazza, che ha esigenze illuminotecniche maggiori per la circolazione delle auto e degli autobus. 33 Castel Sant Angelo is one of the most famous monuments in Rome. Built by emperor Hadrian in 125 as his mausoleum, it actually was home to the remains of emperor Hadrian, in addition to other emperors such as Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius and Septimius Severus. Castel Sant Angelo è uno dei monumenti più famosi di Roma. Iniziato dall imperatore Adriano nel 125 d.c., quale suo mausoleo funebre, ospitò effettivamente i resti di Adriano così come quelli di altri imperatori tra cui Antonino Pio, Marco Aurelio e Settimio Severo. 36 Even for this historical place, Light 804 was chosen for the lighting in the park of Castel Sant Angelo, where it was installed on the existing posts.
