(to whom?) o Like the direct-object pronouns, these come right before a conjugated verb. Forma: Singular 1 st mi (to me) Alessandra mi telefona sempre. Alessandra always calls me. 2 nd ti (to you, fam.) Sara ti parlerà più tardi. Sara will speak to you later. 3 rd gli (to him) Gli ho scritto la settimana scorsa. I wrote to him last week. le (to her) Alberto le darà il libro. Alberto will give the book to her. Le (to you, pol.) Signor Morelli, Le telefonerò domani. Mr. Morelli, I will phone you tomorrow. Plural 1 st ci (to us) Lui ci scrive sempre. He always writes to us. 2 nd vi (to you) Lei non vi parla mai. She never speaks to you. 3 rd gli (to them) Io gli consegnerò il compito tra poco. I will hand in the assignment to them soon. o The third-person plural, has the alternative form loro. If the loro form is used, it must be put after the verb. However, in contemporary Italian, the tendecy is to use mainly the gli form. Camilla dà loro i libri. Camilla gli dà i libri. o There is no agreement in compound tenses between the past participle and the indirectobject pronoun. Direct Stefano ha comprato quella camincia. Stefano l ha comprata. Ne o The particle ne, meaning some (of it, of them), replaces nouns (in a direct-object position) that denote quantity (partitive structures). o Like the direct-object pronoun, it is placed right before the conjugated verb. A. It can replace di + l articolo determinativo. Vuoi dei libri? Comprerai della carne? Sì, ne voglio. No, non ne comprerò. B. It can replace the noun in partitive phrases beginning with alcuni/e, un po di. Vorrei alcuni libri. Prendo alcune banane. Comprerò un po di carne. Prendo un po di zucchero. Ne vorrei alcuni. Ci o The particle ci is used in numerous expressions, such as c è, ci sono, in which it means there. o In general, it can replace any word or phrase that refers to location or place. o Note that there is no agreement between ci and the past participle in compound tenses. Sì, ci vado. Sì, ci andrò. o However, ne is used instead to replace expressions such as, from the doctor s, from Maria s place, etc. Going to Vai dal medico? Sì, ci vado. Coming from Vieni dal medico? Sì, ne vengo. 11. Double Pronouns (pronomi doppi) o When both direct and indirect-object pronouns are used together, the following rules apply: A. The indirect-object pronoun precedes the direct one, and the agreement pattern between the past participle and the direct-object pronoun still applies. Ho comprato per voi questa valigia. I bought you that suitcase. Ve la ho comprata. I bought it for you. B. The indirect-object pronouns mi, ti, ci and vi are changed to me, te, ce, and ve before lo, la, li, le and ne. Maurizio mi ha dato i bagagli. Gianni ti ho dato la penna ieri. Ci daranno le informazioni lì. Vi hanno portato due riviste. Maurizio me li ha dati. Gianni te l ho data ieri. Ce le daranno lì. Ve ne hanno portate due. C. The indirect-object pronoun forms gli (to him, to them) and le (to her) are both changed to glie- before lo, la, li, le and ne, forming one word with them. Alessandro gli ha dato il biglietto. Io le ho già comprato gli orecchini. Mario le ha portato due patate. Alessandro glielo ha dato. Io glieli ho già comprati. Mario gliene ha portate due. o The same rules apply when reflexive pronouns are used with direct-object pronouns: Io mi metto sempre il vestito. Io me lo metto sempre. 8

Modal constructions and pronouns o With modal constructions, both the direct and the indirect-object pronouns, as well as ne, can come before the modal verb or can be attached to the infinitive.
