2 Comparatives are particular forms of some adjectives and adverbs, used when making a comparison between two elements: Learning Spanish is easier than learning Italian Regular forms of COMPARATIVES in Italian are: - è meno facile imparare l italiano che imparare lo spagnolo LESS - Imparare l italiano è più difficile che imparare lo spagnolo Lo spagnolo è più facile dell italiano MORE - Imparare l italiano è facile quanto/come imparare l inglese AS AS

3 Comparative adjectives are formed by placing più (more) and meno (less) before the adjective. Più/meno are invariable but the adjectives change to agree with the word they refer to. The second element of comparison is introduced in Italian by either di or che, where English would use than The choice of either di or che depends on what part of speech the second element of the comparison is, and on its position in the sentence: di (joined with the relevant definite article) is used before noun pronoun numerals/numbers adverbs Sara è più simpatica di Maria; Sara è più simpatica di te; Il 1984 è un anno più interessante del 1996Sara è più brava di quanto pensassi; * BUT when TWO adverbs are compared, use CHE (Italian Grammar in Practice) che is used before adjective verb noun/pronoun preceded by preposition Sara è più simpatica che intelligente; Sara è più brava a parlare che a scrivere; Sara è più interessata alle amiche che AL fidanzato; Remember that: Before a preposition (di; a; da; in; con; su; per; tra; fra) you always have CHE Before an infinitive, you always have CHE

Spectre was a very boring movie! - Spectre è un film noiosissimo In Italian there are two forms of superlatives, as in English: Relative superlatives when you refer to something or somebody as having the most of a certain quality in relation to other objects/people, you use: Il più + adjective Absolute adjectives when you want to indicate the greatest possible degree of quality, but without any comparison being made, you: Add the ending issimo (a, i, e, depending on the agreement) to the adjective However, it is also possible in Italian to use the adverb molto to modify the adjective in a similar way to the English very : molto + adjective

6 BETTER/ WORSE When referring to people, più buono and più cattivo reflect MORAL CHARACTER, while migliore and peggiore reflect SKILL. Use migliore / peggiore when referring to OBJECTS or ABSTRACT TERMS: Qual è il migliore giornale, secondo te? Giovedì è il migliore giorno della settimana! ********************* BIGGER/ SMALLER When referring to PHYSICAL SIZE, use più grande / più piccolo. La tua casa è più grande della mia. To express IMPORTANCE use maggiore / minore. Shakespeare è uno dei maggiori drammaturghi inglesi. ********************* ADVERBS Do not confuse migliore / peggiore with meglio / peggio even though both are translated as better / worse in English. Meglio and peggio have 2 syllables as does the word ADVERB, so meglio and peggio are adverbs!
