1 CONGIUNTIVO IMPERFETTO Imperfect subjunctive The congiuntivo presente and congiuntivo passato that we have learned in Unit 9 are used only when the verb in the main clause (expressing a thought, opinion, desire, fear, etc.) is in the present tense. When the verb requiring the subjunctive is in the past (passato prossimo, imperfetto or passato remoto) the verb in the dependent clause must be either in the or the. The corresponds to the imperfetto (see Unit 4.2) in the indicative mood. Compare the two sentences: Imperfetto indicativo Sapevo che lui abitava a Roma. I knew that he was living in Rome. Congiuntivo imperfetto Pensavo che lui abitasse a Roma. I thought that he was living in Rome. In English the imperfect subjunctive (forms in bold) is found in sentences such as the following: If I were you, I would not go out with him! I wish I were there with you! Compare the congiuntivo presente and imperfetto in the following examples: Congiuntivo presente Penso che sia molto costoso passare una vacanza in Puglia. I think it s very expensive to spend a vacation in Puglia. Non voglio che i ragazzi escano da soli stasera. I don t want the boys (to) go out by themselves tonight. Non credono che lei abbia ragione. They don t believe that she is right. Temo che la disoccupazione sia in aumento. I fear that unemployment is on the rise. Non è giusto che il governo aumenti le tasse. It is not fair that the government raise taxes. Bisogna che gli studenti studino di più. It is necessary that students study more. Congiuntivo imperfetto Pensavo che fosse molto costoso passare una vacanza in Puglia. I thought it was (would be) be very expensive to spend a vacation in Puglia. Non volevo che i ragazzi uscissero soli. I didn t want the boys (to) go out by themselves tonight. Non credevano che lei avesse ragione. They didn t believe that she was right. Compare the trapassato indicativo and in the following examples: Compare the two sentences: trapassato indicativo Sapevo che lui aveva già visitato Roma l anno prima. I knew that he had already visited Rome the year before. Credevo che lui avesse già visitato Roma l anno prima. I believed that he had already visited Rome the year before. Just like the trapassato indicativo, the is often used with the adverbs già and non ancora, because it describes events that had already happened or had not happened yet before an established point in the past. The is formed with the of the auxiliary (essere or avere) plus the past participle. 3
