Houghton Mifflin Company libri: Libro di testo + Workbook/Lab Obiettivi e contenuti Designed primarily for advanced students, Italian 104 intends to review and expand upon all aspects of grammar covered in beginning courses, while providing reading and oral practice within an integrated exercise program. In addition, the ambition of Italian 104 is to have students approach Italian literary texts and movies and discuss them in relation to the general cultural aspects of Italy. Italian 104 aims at improving the students writing, reading and speaking skills and to further acquaint them with cultural and artistic expressions from Italy. Risultati -Students will improve their oral communication abilities (both in listening and speaking) and will become more proficient in successfully understanding oral exchanges, in expressing opinions, in telling stories and summarizing situations. -Students will be able to discuss, both in oral and written form, topics related to the advanced material introduced by each reading/viewing. -Students will demonstrate competency in advanced grammatical structures such as the future tense, the conditional and subjunctive modes, pronouns, agreement of tenses, in addition to a refined recognition and use of idiomatic language within the framework of Italian culture. Verifiche -Students will demonstrate competency in understanding and actively using advanced Italian language and in analyzing the readings/viewings proposed by successfully completing 6 written quizzes, 1 written midterm, 1 final exam and 1 oral presentation. -Students will demonstrate written competency in Italian by completing the exercises in the textbook, in the workbook and on the textbook website and by writing compositions on the cultural material proposed. Students are expected to hand in the workbook/lab of each chapter as soon as we have completed such chapter, as well as to the instructor the web-based exercises before the nextday class. -Students will demonstrate oral competency by responding in Italian to questions and by preparing oral reports and presentations. Grade breakdown: quizzes 25%, participation (presence + active participation + homework + compositions) 30%, midterm 20%, final 25%. 1

3 Three absences (excused or unexcused) are allowed; after three absences, the participation grade will go down by 0.1 grade point/each absence. No make-up exams unless for medical reasons; the lowest quiz grade will not be counted. Metodo didattico The instructor will promote and foster communication between students in small and larger groups. She will introduce new grammatical concepts while coordinating practical exercises that are either interactive exchanges and/or that simulate everyday exchanges between native speakers. All students are expected to actively participate in class activities, and always in Italian; group and/or individual practice stimulates the overall communicative abilities of the students by encouraging their direct use of vocabulary, structure and culture. NB: you are expected to do everyday on the workbook the exercises corresponding to the material covered in class and/or assigned for the next class.
