This program will cover some of the grammatical and linguistic structures studied during the Intensive Proficiency course and will introduce and analyze more complex, new topics. This course will focus on morphosyntax, particularly on agreement of tenses in both the indicative and subjunctive modes, and on indirect discourse. Students will also have to deepen their knowledge of connection and use of main and subordinate clauses. Course Content Grammar: concordanza dell indicativo, ripasso preposizioni di luogo, plurale dei nomi in -cia, -gia; verbi, espressioni con di/a + infinito, ripasso dei pronomi relativi; forme impersonali tipiche del genere espositivo; sinonimi e parole complesse, derivazione: verbi ->aggettivi in -ante/-ente, -ivo, -abile; congiuntivo: revisione dei tempi, usi e sintassi; connettivi concessivi, derivazione con prefissi e suffissi colti: filo-, -logo, -fono, verbo fare: farcela, fare caso; raddoppiamento fonosintattico nella grafia: siccome, sennò, sfera semantica di mestieri e professioni, derivazione nomi d agente, frasi relative e modi verbali; concordanza all indicativo, verbi che reggono il congiuntivo e il futuro, aggettivi e pronomi indefiniti; ordini marcati: dislocazioni, futuro nel passato (condizionale passato); particella pronominale ne, pronomi combinati con ne, concordanza: congiuntivo presente vs passato; usi, forme e funzioni delle preposizioni semplici ed articolate, connettivi per argomentare, espressioni idiomatiche con ne; il futuro (forma passiva), il participio presente, forma passiva vs. attiva; concordanza: congiuntivo imperfetto vs. trapassato, connettivi modali; forme di negazione, concordanza dei tempi dell indicativo, indefiniti; uso della punteggiatura, usi e forme del participio passato e del gerundio, differenza tra forma implicita e forma esplicita nelle subordinate, introduzione ai principali tipi di subordinate; verbi causativi, ripasso del periodo ipotetico, il discorso indiretto.

Learning objectives By the end of this course, students will be able to: - strengthen their knowledge of and feel comfortable with the use of complex linguistic and syntactic structures, - expand and diversify their vocabulary through the use and study of multiple sources (newspapers, videos, tv news, radio shows, interviews, texts), - write detailed texts following academic standards, - keep up with conversations with native speakers on a variety of topics, being familiar with them or not. Course Prerequisites Italian Proficiency I level. Methods of Instruction The course will be taught in Italian. The teaching methods will include use of the textbook, video and audio materials plus other written sources. In addition to lectures and traditionally structured lessons, the course will feature fieldtrips and walking tours. Course Requirements Written Assignments Students will be given written assignments on a regular basis to check their progress. The topics will be linked to those analyzed in class. Oral Presentation Students will present their opinions about the topics discussed in class, supported by further, individual researches. The students might also be asked to work on group presentations. At the end of each presentation, there will be a class discussion. Attendance and Class Participation

3 A total of two classes, due to sickness, personal emergency, inevitable transport delay and/or other impediments will be tolerated. Additional unexcused absences will result in further half point reductions. Students arriving more than 10 minutes late to the class will be considered absent for a day. Late assignments will be marked down 5% after the first day and 1% every day afterwards. No coursework will be accepted after the last day of class. Final Exam Students will take a final exam at the end of the course. The exam will include all topics analyzed in class. Lesson 2 Grammatica: verbi, espressioni con di/a + infinito, ripasso dei pronomi relativi: relativi con funzione possessiva, relativi doppi, usi di proprio. Lessico: Ritratto della provincia italiana -> discussion on provincialism. Week 2 Lesson 3 Grammatica: forme impersonali tipiche del genere espositivo: si impersonale, passivo, verbi impersonali, sinonimi e parole complesse, derivazione: verbi ->aggettivi in -ante/ -ente, -ivo, -abile. Lessico: La lingua dei giovani -> teenagers slang, influence of English language on Italian slang. Lesson 4 Grammatica: congiuntivo: revisione dei tempi, usi e sintassi, verbi irregolari al congiuntivo. Lessico: Il dialetto oggi -> pros and cons of teaching dialect in Italy nowadays. Week 3 Lesson 5 Grammatica: parole complesse: in relazione a, connettivi concessivi, derivazione con prefissi e suffissi colti: filo-, -logo, -fono, verbo fare: farcela, fare caso. Lessico: Come cambia la lingua? -> evolution of Italian language.
