Green Limbus Verde Limbo Blue Tympan Blu Timpano Red Rete Rosso Rete Magenta Regula Magenta Regola Usually an astrolabe has more then one tympan to make it suitable for a series of latitudes. But here the astrolabe is restricted for the latitude of 41.5º North. Solitamente un astrolabio ha più di un timpano, per renderlo utilizzabile anche a diverse latitudini. In questo caso l'astrolabio è limitato alla latitudine di 41.5 N. Upon the tympan is the rete. This is a projection of the sky with the ecliptic and the stars. Here it is a disk of transparent material. Al di sopra del timpano vi è la rete. E' una proiezione del cielo, con l'eclittica e le stelle. Nel nostro caso, si tratta di un disco di materiale trasparente. On top is the regula with a scale for the sun s declination. Al di sopra troviamo la regola, con una scala per la declinazione del Sole. The rete and regula can rotate around the center of the astrolabe. 3 Dorsum or back of a simple astrolabe. Dorso o retro di un astrolabio semplice. Green Blue Red Magenta Verde Blu Rosso Magenta Conversion scales to read the sun s position in the ecliptic from a date. Shadow quadrant. Simple scale to read antique hours. Alidade to measure the altitude of the sun or a star. Here the alidade is simplified to a single line. Scale di conversione per leggere la posizione del sole nell'eclittica da una data Quadrante delle ombre Semplice scala per leggere le ore antiche Alidada per misurare l'altezza del Sole o di una stella. Qui l'alidada è semplificata con una linea. In the above example it is read that at the 1 st of November the sun is 9º in the sign of Scorpius. 4 Limbus. Limbo. Usually the limbus has two scales. In this case the outer scale is to read degrees in the range of The inner scale is divided in 24 hours in the range XII VI XII VI. Solitamente, il limbo ha due scale. In questo caso, la scala esterna permette di leggere i gradi nell'intervallo La scala interna è divisa in 24 ore nell'intervallo XII - VI - XII - VI.

5 Tympan. Timpano. Three concentric circles represent the sun s declination circles at the start of the four seasons. The seasons start at 0ºAries, Cancer, Libra and Capricornus. I tre cerchi concentrici rappresentano la declinazione del Sole all'inizio delle quattro stagioni. Le stagioni iniziano a 0 in Ariete, Cancro, Bilancia e Capricorno. On top is a diagram for the sun s altitude and azimuth. The arc with label 0 represent the horizon, the arc with label -18 is the start of the astronomical night. Nella parte superiore, notiamo un diagramma per l'altitudine del Sole e l'azimut. L'arco contrassegnato da 0 rappresenta l'orizzonte, l'arco con l'indicazione -18 è l'inizio della notte astronomica. The tympan shown here is for the latitude of 41.5º North. Il timpano qui rappresentato è per la latitudine di 41.5 N. For any other latitude a new tympan must be drawn. 6 Rete. Rete. On the rete a scale for the ecliptic is drawn. Because of the projection for the astrolabe the ecliptic lies off-center. Sulla rete troviamo una scala per l'eclittica. I punti nella figura sopra riportata rappresentano numerose stelle del cielo. The drawing here is simplified but most of the times the rete is a beautiful part of an astrolabe. 7 Regula. Regola. On the regula a scale for the sun s declination is drawn in the range from 90º to -23.5º. 8 Tympan 1 for ecliptical planetary hours. Timpano 1 per le ore planetare eclitticali. For the latitude of 41.5º North the hours for the lengthening days are given. Vengono fornite le ore per i giorni di durata crescente per la latitudine di 41.5 N. The blue arc is the horizon and this also is the start of the first planetary hour. L'arco blu è l'orizzonte ed è anche l'inizio della prima ora planetaria. On top are the day hours, at bottom the night hours. In alto, le ore del giorno, in basso le ore della notte. In the day as well as in the night there are 12 hours, but the length of these hours varies continuously. Nel giorno, come nella notte, vi sono 12 ore, ma la lunghezze delle ore varia continuamente. On the next four pages some readings of this astrolabe are given. The rete is simplified. The scale of the ecliptic is divided in 15º and no stars are drawn. Readings at the ecliptic are taken on the outer circle. Nelle prossime pagine vi sono alcuni esempi di lettura per questo astrolabio. La rete è stata semplificata. 10 Example 1. Basic settings of the astrolabe. Esempio 1. Impostazioni base per l'astrolabio. The date is the 1 st of November and on the dorsum we read that the sun is 9º in the sign of Scorpius. On the front of the astrolabe the regula is set on this spot of the ecliptic. It doesn t matter what the position of the rete is. Sulla regola leggiamo che la declinazione del Sole è As an extra help this declination circle is drawn in green, but usually these circles aren t present. We now may calculate the half day arc T with: cos T = - tan φ tan δ = - tan 41.5 tan(-14.6). T = 76.68º, but this is just for an extra check. 11 Example 2. Half day arc and time of sunrise. Esempio 2: Arco del mezzo giorno e momento del sorgere del Sole. Rotate the rete and regula until the spot of the sun is at the horizon at the left side of the tympan. We now may read that the half day arc, counted from XII in top, is 76.7º and the time of sunrise is 6 hours and 53 minutes. Ruotare la rete e la regola fino a che il punto del Sole sia sull'orizzonte sulla sinistra del timpano. The half night arc, counted from XII at bottom is 103.7º. Have in mind that the planetary hours are counted as periods of time, just as the antique hours are counted.
