During the construction of the two new structures, it was decided by the builder to have an increased gap between the axes of the trusses at the joints in order to ease the assembly of the three dimensional layout of the structure. The decision taken by the builder is critical with reference to the state of stress introduced within the structure at the joints; This is due to the remarkable measure of the eccentricity, that varied from a minimum of 150mm to a maximum of roughly 170mm and to the survey inaccuracies that led to eccentric supports at the tripods. 19

Part. 2 Part. 3 32
With reference to the results obtained it was decide to replace some parts of the structure reducing the eccentricities at the joints (fig 12) and, since this was found not to be enough, replacing the existing bearings over the tripods with new bearings placed at appropriate locations so not to have any further eccentricities. The structure, as resulting from the proposed changes is shown in figure 13. Green areas refer to zones that were left with the eccentricities as they were originally built. Blue areas (fig. 13) refer to zones with reduced eccentricities as shown in figure 12(I), while yellow areas (fig. 13), over the supports, refer to zones with joints characterized by the absence of any accentricities. A new global FE model representative of the proposed retrofitting strategy was implemented (fig. 14, 15). 33
34
The proposal followed after the builder introduced different eccentricities at the joints compared to those provided in the original project and after some inaccuracies during the survey implied further eccentricities at the supports. This problems, as previously shown, implied unbearable state of stress within the structure. Local and global FE analysis carried out on the footbridge allowed for a strategy that led to the modification of the as built situation without, nevertheless, stepping back to the original layout, but still accepting a certain degree of eccentricity at the joints. This allowed for a reduction of the total cost of retrofitting keeping the overall cost of construction (inclusive of the retrofitting phase) comparable to the one budgeted for the original structure with no eccentricities. 35
