Le pietre della storia The stones of history Chiese, palazzi e monumenti storici Gli edifici più importanti si affacciano su Piazza Grande e lungo il chilometro e mezzo del Corso centrale, una galleria di straordinario valore storico e architettonico. I palazzi sono idealmente collegati tra loro da due poli, la casa natale del poeta e umanista Angelo Poliziano (Montepulciano 1454 - Firenze 1494) ed il teatro neoclassico che porta lo stesso appellativo. Simbolo architettonico di Montepulciano è il Tempio di San Biagio, realizzato su progetto di Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio. Imponente santuario in travertino a pianta centrale, con la facciata principale affiancata da due campanili (uno incompiuto) e una perfetta cupola, è il riassunto paradigmatico delle teorie architettoniche del Rinascimento. Churches, palazzos and historical monuments The most important buildings face each other across the Piazza Grande and along the kilometre and a half of the central Corso, a gallery of extraordinary historical and architectural value. These palazzos are connected by two hubs: the house where the poet and humanist Angelo Poliziano (Montepulciano 1454 - Florence 1494) was born; and the neoclassical theatre that carries his name. The Sanctuary of San Biagio has become an architectural symbol of Montepulciano. It was designed by Antonio da Sangallo the elder. The imposing centrally planned travertine stone sanctuary, the principal façade flanked by two bell towers (one incomplete) and the perfect dome combine to make this an ideal example of the architectural theories of the Renaissance put beautifully into practice. / 5

A questo stile si rifanno anche i palazzi Avignonesi, Cocconi, Cervini, Gagnoni-Grugni, Del Monte-Contucci, Ricci e Nobili- Tarugi, per citare i principali. Negli anni a cavallo tra il XVII e XVIII secolo, il celebre architetto Andrea Pozzo lasciò a Montepulciano, tra l altro, l imponente Chiesa del Gesù, la preziosa Chiesa di S.Bernardo e il salone delle feste di Palazzo Contucci. Il Palazzo Comunale con la torre e terrazza panoramica nonchè la Chiesa di Sant Agostino, sono invece opera quattrocentesca di Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, mentre l architettura tardo cinquecentesca è espressa dalla Cattedrale, dalle Logge del grano e dalla Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie, su progetto di Ippolito Scalza. Allo stile gotico si rifanno poi le chiese di S.Agnese, fuori dalla porta di Gracciano, quella di S.Francesco, sulla omonima piazza da cui si gode un panorama mozzafiato su Pienza e la Val d Orcia, e quella di S.Maria, dal cui belvedere si scopre invece il lato della Valdichiana. Vanno poi ricordati nella parte bassa del corso la Torre di Pulcinella, il settecentesco palazzo Bucelli, con il basamento decorato da urne etrusco-romane, e la cosiddetta Colonna del Marzocco che testimonia il legame tra Montepulciano e Firenze. In the years bridging the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Andrea Pozzo, the celebrated architect, adorned Montepulciano with, among other things, the imposing Church of the Gesu, the treasured church of San Bernardo and the Salone delle Feste in the Palazzo Contucci. The Town Hall - with its tower and panoramic terrace - and the church of Sant Agostino are fifteenth century works by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo. The architecture of the late sixteenth century can be admired in the Cathedral, the Logge del Grano and the church of the Madonna delle Grazie, designed by Ippolito Scalza. The gothic style can be admired in the church of Sant Agnese, outside the Gracciano entrance, the church of San Francesco on the piazza of the same name (which offers a breath-taking view of Pienza and the Val d Orcia), and the church of Santa Maria (from where visitors can look out over the Val di Chiana). Also noteworthy are the Pulcinella (or Punchinello) Tower, the seventeenth century Palazzo Bucelli, with its lower façade embellished with Etruscan and Roman urns, and the Marzocco Column that bears witness to the ties connecting Montepulciano with Florence. / 6

Dagli etruschi a Caravaggio From the Etruscans to Caravaggio Musei e dintorni Il Museo Civico dal 1954 ha sede in Via Ricci, nel trecentesco Palazzo Neri Orselli. L esposizione si articola su quattro sezioni: la Pinacoteca Crociani, composta dai circa centottanta dipinti; la sezione poliziana, con reperti lapidei; l archeologica, che ospita corredi tombali etruschi del VI-V sec. a.c. e reperti romani, e quella che raccoglie le preziose terrecotte dei Della Robbia. Museums and the surrounding area The Municipal Museum has been housed in Via Ricci since 1954, in the fourteenth-century Palazzo Neri Orselli. The exhibits are divided into four sections: the Crociani Gallery, with about 180 paintings on display; the Montepulciano section, featuring stone exhibits; the archaeology section, with Etruscan grave goods from the sixth and fifth centuries B.C. and Roman finds; and the treasured Della Robbia terracotta section.

La recente attribuzione a Caravaggio di un ritratto della collezione ha suscitato un nuovo, fortissimo interesse per questo museo. Locals are no longer surprised to see girls running across the Piazza Grande to meet their lover at the entrance to the Town Hall, mimicking the actions of the vampires from the recent hit film New Moon and feeling like film stars! Il Vino Nobile è il primo vino in Italia ad essersi fregiato del marchio Docg, ma le sue qualità erano ben note fin da tempi più remoti. Montepulciano d ogni vino è Re, diceva Francesco Redi nel 1685. In realtà si comincia a chiamarlo Vino Nobile, almeno secondo le tracce storiche, da fine Settecento. In tutti questi anni il Vino Nobile di strada ne ha continuata a percorrere e da vino di Papi e di nobili, è diventato un prodotto apprezzato in tutto il mondo dagli appassionati. The Vino Nobile is the first wine in Italy to bear the DOCG seal of quality, but its qualities have been recognised since more remote times. As Francesco Redi had it in 1685, of all wines, Montepulciano is King. Records show that Montepulciano wine has been referred to as the Vino Nobile since at least the end of the eighteenth century. The Vino Nobile has been a constant throughout these years: from the wine of popes and nobles, today it has become a product appreciated by wine lovers around the world. Its soul is the Sangiovese grape (the Prugnolo Gentile variety in Montepulciano). After two years ageing in barrels or casks the wine attains its unmistakable flavour, making it recognisable and giving it a strong territorial identity. / 11

La terra: madre di tante eccellenze The land: provider of a bounty of excellence Se il vino è il prodotto principe a Montepulciano, tuttavia la forte vocazione agricola di queste terre si esprime attraverso tanti altri prodotti unici. Non è un caso che sia nato il progetto Arte e Cibo grazie al quale la Strada del Vino Nobile ha creato un concetto di filiera corta che lega l artigianato (altro grande patrimonio) alle delizie di Montepulciano: dalle carni di razza Chianina, il cosiddetto Gigante Bianco invidiato in tutto il mondo, a quelle di Cinta Senese (la prima carne in Europa a ricevere la Dop). Non possono mancare nella lista dei prodotti d eccellenza l Olio extravergine d oliva Terre di Siena DOP e Toscano IGP, inconfondibili espressioni degli oliveti collinari e lavorati nel Frantoio di Montepulciano, che raccoglie gran parte della produzione locale. If wine is the principle product of Montepulciano, the strong agricultural vocation of these lands also expresses itself through many other unique products. Montepulciano is a natural home for the Art and Food project, which collaborates with the Strada del Vino Nobile association to minimise the distance between the producer and the consumer, and link local craftsmanship (another great heritage) with local delicacies: from Chianina beef, the meat from the world famous breed known as the White Giants, to Cinta Senese pork (the first meat in Europe to qualify for PDO registration). The list of products par excellence would not be complete without the Terre di Siena PDO and Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oil, the unique taste of the hillside olive groves, from the Montepulciano Frantoio (olive mill), where a large part of the local olive harvest is pressed. / 14

UNA TERRA The Montepulicano Lake nature reserve covers 470 hectares, including the 70 hectares that make up the water surface. Green Economy: a Montepulciano parte dal vino The Green Economy: in Montepulciano, it starts with the wine Il rispetto per l ambiente è uno degli elementi che da sempre distingue questo territorio e la produzione di Vino Nobile. Solo grazie a questo, ne sono convinti i produttori, si può ottenere un vino che parla di un territorio. Non è un caso dunque che proprio a Montepulciano siano molte, sempre di più, le aziende vitivinicole che hanno realizzato innovativi progetti di energia rinnovabile applicati alla cantina. Anche l Amministrazione Comunale ha in progetto la realizzazione di un dissociatore molecolare per biomasse alimentato proprio dai residui di potatura dei vigneti. GREEN ECONOMY This territory has always been distinguished by its respect for the environment, particularly regarding the production of the Vino Nobile. The producers are convinced that it is this respect that has allowed them to produce a wine that expresses its territory so eloquently. This respect is apparent in the number of wine growing and wine producing farms in Montepulciano that have effected innovative renewable energy projects for their wine production. The municipal authorities are working on a biomass molecular dissociation plant to be fuelled specifically by the cuttings resulting from pruning the vineyards. / 22

La Fortezza The Fortezza Massiccia, imponente, situata a pochi passi da Piazza Grande, in posizione defilata e quasi protetta da un raffinato giardino all italiana, la Fortezza è probabilmente uno degli edifici più antichi della città in quanto sorto su strutture risalenti addirittura ad un tempio romano dedicato a Mercurio. Oggi restaurata nella sua ala ottocentesca (grazie all impegno congiunto del Comune e dei produttori del Consorzio del Vino Nobile), la Fortezza è un importante centro culturale di Montepulciano e a breve diventerà il punto di riferimento dell eccellenza del vino di Montepulciano (ospitando gli uffici del Consorzio, l Enoteca e spazi per mostre, degustazioni ed altre iniziative). The massive, imposing Fortezza is situated a few steps from the Piazza Grande, in a secluded position, almost protected by its genteel Italian garden. It is probably one of the oldest buildings in the city: it was built on the site of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the god Mercury. Today, its nineteenth century wing has been restored (thanks to the combined efforts of the Council and the producers of the Consorzio del Vino Nobile), and the Fortezza has become an important cultural centre of Montepulciano. It will soon become a point of reference for the excellence of Montepulicano wine (hosting the offices of the Consorzio, the Wine Shop and areas for exhibitions, wine tastings and other initiatives). / 23

Ideato nel 1976 da Hans Werner Henze, è l incontro tra artisti celebri e giovani talenti: gli spettacoli nascono tra le strade del centro storico e il Teatro Poliziano, coinvolgendo le chiese, la fortezza, le gallerie e gli spazi più curiosi. Una rassegna diffusa sul territorio, dove tutti gli artisti, anche quelli più blasonati, lavorano in cambio di vitto e alloggio, senza alcun compenso. Un Cantiere aperto alle produzioni più originali e innovative. UNA PASSIONE Every summer, the inspiring Cantiere Internazionale d'arte review brings opera, theatre, classical and contemporary music, the arts and multimedia performances to Montepulciano. Hans Werner Henze founded the review in 1976, in order to bring together established artists and young talent. The performances take place throughout the town, in the streets of the old town centre, in the Teatro Poliziano, in the town s churches, in the Fortezza, in the galleries, and in the town s most enchanting locations. None of the artists receive payment: even the most distinguished participate for food and lodging. The Cantiere has proved to be a fertile ground for the most original and innovative productions. / 24

Bravìo delle Botti e Bruscello Bravìo delle Botti and the Bruscello www.braviodellebotti.com Due manifestazioni che attingono dalla storia ed alla tradizione medievale, ma che oggi esprimono la personalità più autenticamente popolare della città, infiammando l estate e richiamando migliaia di spettatori. Il Bravìo è la competizione tra le otto contrade di Montepulciano: vince quella che arriva per prima in Piazza Grande, dopo che due atleti hanno fatto rotolare per un tortuoso percorso cittadino una botte di 80 kg! Il Bruscello è un autentico spettacolo in musica, recitato da dilettanti, che si rappresenta in Piazza Grande a Ferragosto, sotto il cielo tiepido e stellato e che ripropone antiche storie, tratte da vicende epiche o cavalleresche o che rievocano fatti che hanno interessato la comunità e il territorio. These two events may draw on history and medieval tradition, but they are one of the most authentic expressions of the popular spirit of the city today, arousing passions in the summer months and attracting thousands of spectators. The Bravìo is a contest between the eight districts of Montepulciano: the winning district is the first to arrive in the Piazza Grande, after their two representatives have rolled an 80 kg barrel up a tortuous route through the streets of the city! The Bruscello is an original musical production, performed by amateurs, that takes place in the Piazza Grande on or around the 15 August bank holiday, under the starry summer sky, presenting age-old stories based on epic, chivalrous events, or tales concerning matters of interest to the community and the territory. / 26
