McMenamin/De Santo COURSE DESCRIPTION Designed for students with no previous knowledge of Italian. Basic oral expression, listening comprehension, and elementary reading and writing are the goals of the course. ATTENDANCE: It is required that students attend class regularly, and that they arrive promptly. Repeated absenteeism and tardiness will be reflected in your final grade. LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: (from the Harvard Summer School Faculty Handbook) Summer School credits are transferable to the permanent academic records of Harvard degree candidates, so Summer School courses must conform to the University s term-time standards. All students (including participants in the Secondary School Program) are expected to meet these standards and should be evaluated accordingly. PREPARATION Grammar and vocabulary are to be studied daily, and exercises, activities and skits are to be prepared prior to class meetings according to the syllabus and/or supplemental exercises sent out via email. LAB/WORKBOOK: Each chapter in Ciao! has a corresponding section of exercises and activities for both grammar and vocabulary. These assignments will be reviewed regularly and checked for completeness (see attached calendar). Students will practice in the language lab for at least one (1) hour per day. Required lab work includes the relevant chapters in the Ciao! lab program as indicated on the syllabus and attached calendar. The Language Resource Center (LRC) is located on the 6th floor of Lamont Library. We encourage you to consult the LRC website and visit the center as soon as possible: http://lrcnt.fas.harvard.edu. COMPOSITIONS: There are weekly written compositions (or Temi ) based on chapter themes (see attached calendar). You will be graded on the correct use of grammar covered in class and proper use of vocabulary. Creativity and originality are much appreciated. Other homework may be assigned by your instructor, including the preparation of oral reports or skits. PAROLIERE: Students should keep an ongoing vocabulary list throughout the course. Students are responsible for the vocabulary discussed in class and found in the textbook (specifically the list at the end of each chapter of our textbook and the vocabulary provided for Andreuccio da Perugia on the course website). VERBI: While this course has an oral approach to language learning, command of the various verb tenses does take time and preparation. Therefore, verbs will be drilled on a daily basis during the last 10 minutes of class. GRADING There will be weekly chapter quizzes (written or oral), a two-hour midterm exam and a three-hour final exam. (see attached calendar) Grades will be calculated according to the following criteria: 10% class attentiveness and preparation 15% class participation and presentations 15% workbook and lab 20% oral quizzes/skits (6) 20% written quizzes (6) + weekly temi (7) 20% midterm + final exam
