It would be desirable to have a log of all state-changing activities of important processes, analogous to a flight data recorder used to investigate plane crashes. Growth in computational power and storage capacity appears to make comprehensive traceability feasible. 9 EURES Norway PhD Grants Conflicting Incentives Risk Analysis Gjøvik University College ( has available 2 PhD positions in the Information Security Management group at NISlab ( The positions are part of the HIS (Humans in Information Security) Research Programme. The objective of HIS is to improve our understanding of risks relating to human behaviour within the context of Information Security by combining ideas from Psychology, Economics, Statistics and Computer Science. The programme currently includes the following projects: PETweb II Privacy-respecting Identity Management for e-norge ASSET - Adaptive Security for Smart Internet of Things in ehealth ETIS Economic Theories in Information Security CIRAD Conflicting Incentives Risk Analysis Development The successful applicant will be assigned to the CIRAD project. CIRA is a risk analysis method built on the premise that risk is a consequence of the possibility of actions generating situations that at the same time would be perceived as highly desirable for the one triggering the action and highly undesirable for the risk taker. Thus, risk is viewed as a function of opposing utility perceptions. In particular, in CIRA, risk is a pair of utilities (unit: U2), and a risk acceptance criterion is a set of such pairs. Classically, risk is taken to be a combination of the likelihood or rate and the consequence of an undesirable incident. Typically, the unit of risk will then be UT-1. However, in cases where there is limited statistical incident data available or the risk generating process is unstable, this style of risk analysis approaches guesswork. Furthermore, for low likelihood incidents it may take a long time before the likelihood claims can be validated. The CIRAD project recognizes these challenges and replaces likelihood by an analysis of stakeholder s perceived incentives. Using this approach, establishment of a Risk Acceptance Criteria amounts to obtaining answers to questions of the form: How big incentives are you willing to accept that a stakeholder will perceive to have towards carrying out an action that will inflict a given loss to you? The CIRAD project is addressing issues such as: Limitations of knowledge capturing, formulating and analyzing uncertainties in the context of conflicting incentives. Skill profile: Statistics or Computer Science. Construction of metrics and analysis of utility factors and stakeholder weights. Skill profile: Psychology, Behavioural economics or Computer Science.
