3 Abstract The analysis of WW events taken with the. L3 detector in years 1996 and 1997, are presented. All WW decay channels (fully leptonic, three semileptonic and fully hadronic) have been considered. The cross section for WW production in the different channels has been measured at the three centre-of-mass energies y/s =161, 172 and 184 GeV, at which the L3 detector recorded 11,10 and 55.5 pb~l of data, respectively. The results from the different channels are comined to extract the total WW cross section and the branching ratio of the W boson. Since the cross section depends on the W mass, it is possible to get a measurement of the mass directly from the cross section. This dependence is very strong in the energy region close to the WW production threshold and gets weaker at higher energies, such that the information on the W mass at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV is negligible. Combining the values from the cross sections at 161 and 172 GeV, the W mass found is Mw = ± 0.38(stot.) ± 0.03{syst.) Another aspect of W physics at LEP2 is the possibility of measuring the trilinear coupling of gauge bosons. Values of these couplings different from the standard model also modify the expected WW cross section, so using an independent measurement of the W mass it is possible to interprete the cross section measurement as a determination of the coupling constants. Since no sizable deviation is observed, limits on parameters describing the couplings can be put. In a model where all deviations are concentrated in the magnitude of the ZWW coupling, a fit to the cross sections measured at all energies gives the limit -1.0 <SZ< 0.85 is obtained. A very important parameter in the standard model is the W mass. Apart from the derivation from the cross section, as described before, the mass is measured using the I

4 direct reconstruction of the W decay products. Several experimental effects contribute to a distorsion of the W lineshape, so that a simple fit to the reconstructed invariant mass distribution is not sufficient for a proper mass determination. A reweighting method based on correspondence between data events and fully recenstracted Monte Carlo is used. This method has been tested on high-statistics Monte Carlo events and has been proved to be stable and reliable. The final value of the W mass from direct reconstruction is ± 0.14(s a.) ± 0.09(syst.)\ combining the cross section the final measurement of the W mass this value with that from Mw = ± 0.13(stat.) ± 0M{syst) is derived. Expliting the fact that the percentage of beauty quarks in W decays is negligible, it is possible to perform a charm tag on the jets in WW events. The measurement of the charm fraction in W decays is a direct test of the unitarity of the CKM quark mixing matrix. The result R? = 50.2% ±!1.0%{stat.) ± 3.5%{syst.) in good agreement with the standard model value of 50%. Using independent measurements of the other CKM matrix elements, it is possible to derive from this number a measurement of the least experimentally known parameter Vcs. 5 Riassunto In questa tesi viene presentata l'analisi di eventi di produzione di coppie di bosoni W presi con il rivelatore L3 negli anni 1996 e Tutti i canali di decadimento dei WW (completamente leptonico, tre canali semileptonici e completamente adronico) sono stati considerati. La sezione d'urto per la produzione di coppie di W nei differenti canali di decadimento e' stata misurata alle tre energie di centro di mass yfs =161, 172 e 184 GeV, alle quali il rivelatore L3 ha registrato rispettivamente 11, 10 e 55.5 pb~l di dati. I risultati dai differenti canali sono combinati per estrarre la sezione d'urto totale WW e le percentuali di decadimento dei bosoni W. Siccome la sezione d'urto dipende dalla massa, e possibile avere una misura della massa direttamente dalla sezione d'urto. Questa dipendenza e molto forte nella regione di energie prossima alia soglia di produzione delle coppie di W, e diventa piu debole ad energie maggiori, tanto che l'informazione sulla massa del W ad un'energia di centro di massa di 183 GeV e trascurabile. Combinando i valori dalla sezione d'urto a 161 e 172 GeV, il valore della massa ottenuta e Mw = ± 0.38(stat.) ± 0.03(sist.) Un altro aspetto della fisica dei W a LEP2 e la possibility di misurare l'accoppiamento trilineare dei bosoni di gauge. Valori di questi accoppiamenti differenti dal modello standard modificano la sezione d'urto WW, quindi usando una misura indipendente della massa del W e possibile interpretare la misura della sezione d'urto come una determinazione delle costanti di accoppiamento. Dal momento che non si osserva nessuna deviazione significativa, si possono porre dei limiti sui parametri che descrivono gli accoppiamenti. In un modello in cui tutte le deviazioni sono concentrate nell'ampiezza dell'accoppiamento ZWW, si ottiene il limite -1.0 <8Z< 0.85 Un parametro molto importante per il modello standard e la massa del W. A parte la derivazione dalla sezione d'urto, descritta prima, la massa e misurata usando la III

6 ricostruzione diretta dei prodotti di decadimento del W. Diversi effetti sperimentali contribuiscono ad una distorsione della massa, per cui un semplice fit alia distribuzione sperimentale non e sufficiente per una appropriata determinazione della massa. II metodo utilizzato e basato sulla corrispondenza tra eventi nei dati ed eventi simulati completamente ricostruiti, dando diversi pesi a questi ultimi. II metodo e stato provato su una gran statistica di eventi di MonteCarlo, e si e dimostrato stabile ed affidabile.il valore finale della massa del W dalla ricostruzione diretta e ± 0.14(s at.) ± 0.09(sist.)) combinando questo valore con quello che deriva dalla sezione d'urto si deriva una misura della massa del W Mw = ± 0.13(stat.) ± Q.Q9(sist.) Sfruttando il fatto che la percentuale di quark beauty in decadimenti del W e trascurabile, e possibile realizzare una identificazione di jet di charm in eventi WW. La misura della frazione di charm in jet di W e un test diretto deu'unitarieta della matrice di mixing dei quark di CKM. II risultato R = 50.2% ± 11.0%{stat) ± 3.5%{sist.) e in buon accordo con il valore del modello standard 0.5. Usando misure indipendenti degli altri elementi della matrice CKM e possibile derivare da questo numero una misura dell'elemento Vcs, il meno conosciuto sperimentalmente.
