2 Conserving cetaceans is becoming an increasing challenge in the face of expanding human activities at sea and in the coastal zone. While continued evaluation is necessary for protective measures already implemented, new conservation initiatives must often be devised to confront novel and previously unrecognised threats. 3 IUCN RED LIST ( IUCN - The World Conservation Union, through its Species Survival Commission (SSC) has for more than four decades been assessing the conservation status of species, subspecies, varieties and even selected subpopulations on a global scale in order to highlight taxa threatened with extinction, and therefore promote their conservation.

4 IUCN RED LIST ( The IUCN Red Lists are widely recognized as the most comprehensive, apolitical global approach for evaluating the conservation status of plant and animal species. From their small beginnings, the IUCN Red Lists have grown in size and complexity. The introduction in 1994 of a scientifically rigorous approach to determine risks of extinction that is applicable to all species and infra-specific taxa, has become a virtual world standard.

6 IUCN RED LIST ( ENDANGERED (EN) A taxon is Endangered when the best available evidence indicates that it meets any of the following criteria (A to E), and it is therefore considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild: A. Reduction in population size based on any of the following: 1. An observed, estimated, inferred or suspected population size reduction of 70% over the last 10 years or three generations, whichever is the longer, where the causes of the reduction are clearly reversible AND understood AND ceased, based on (and specifying) any of the following: (a) direct observation (b) an index of abundance appropriate to the taxon (c) a decline in area of occupancy, extent of occurrence and/or quality of habitat (d) actual or potential levels of exploitation (e) the effects of introduced taxa, hybridization, pathogens, competitors or parasites. pollutants,

9 IUCN RED LIST ( EXTENT OF OCCURRENCE Extent of occurrence is defined as the area contained within the shortest continuous imaginary boundary which can be drawn to encompass all the known, inferred or projected sites of present occurrence of a taxon, excluding cases of vagrancy. This measure may exclude discontinuities or disjunctions within the overall distributions of taxa (e.g. large areas of obviously unsuitable habitat). Extent of occurrence can often be measured by a minimum convex polygon (the smallest polygon in which no internal angle exceeds 180 degrees and which contains all the sites of occurrence)

10 IUCN RED LIST ( AREA OF OCCUPANCY Area of occupancy is defined as the area within its 'extent of occurrence' which is occupied by a taxon, excluding cases of vagrancy. The measure reflects the fact that a taxon will not usually occur throughout the area of its extent of occurrence, which may contain unsuitable or unoccupied habitats. In some cases (e.g. irreplaceable colonial nesting sites, crucial feeding sites for migratory taxa) the area of occupancy is the smallest area essential at any stage to the survival of existing populations of a taxon. The size of the area of occupancy will be a function of the scale at which it is measured, and should be at a scale appropriate to relevant biological aspects of the taxon, the nature of threats and the available data. To avoid inconsistencies and bias in assessments caused by estimating area of occupancy at different scales, it may be necessary to standardize estimates by applying a scale-correction factor. It is difficult to give strict guidance on how standardization should be done because different types of taxa have different scale-area relationships.

20 Regione ACCOBAMS La Regione ACCOBAMS (Mediterraneo, Mar Nero, Atlantico adiacente) è una delle regioni marine più impattate dalle attività umane. La concentrazione di uomini e di attività umane minaccia l ambiente marino e costiero impattando sulla struttura e sul funzionamento degli ecosistemi naturali e sulla qualità e quantità delle risorse naturali. La situazione è destinata a peggiorare in futuro: In the future, coastal areas are likely to face increasing pressures, particularly on habitats, natural resources (land, fresh/marine waters and energy), and growth of demand for infrastructures (ports/marinas, transport, wastewater treatment facilities, etc.). Urbanisation, tourism, agriculture, fishing, transport and industry are the major forces of change. (European Environment Agency 1999). L attuale popolazione mediterranea di 450 milioni di abitanti è prevista raggiungere i milioni nel 2030 e i 700 milioni nel 2050.

21 Regione ACCOBAMS Il Mediterraneo (European Environment Agency 1999), con una superficie pari al 0.8% di tutti i mari, sopporta il 15% di tutti i traffici marittimi mondiali e il 30% del totale dei trasporti di greggio via mare. Il numero di barche da pesca è aumentato del 20% tra il 1980 e il Gli impianti di acquacoltura sono passati da una produzione di tonnellate nel 1984 a tonnellate nel Circa il 60% dei rifiuti urbani rilasciati in Mediterraneo non è trattato, anche se si ritiene che l immissione di sostanze estranee, spesso nocive, non può essere eliminata dal turnover delle acque che ha un ritmo stimato di 100 anni. Il Mar Nero è riconosciuta come una delle regioni marine più impattate dall attività umana.

23 Uccisione diretta e cattura Med Caccia commerciale alle balene Mai praticata in Mediterraneo, fatta eccezione per lo stretto di Gibilterra. Tra il 1922 al 1926 sterminate quasi tutte le balene dello stretto, caccia fino alla fine Uccisione diretta Il problema riguarda soprattutto i piccoli cetacei, (Tursiops truncatus, Stenella coeruleoalba e Delphinus delphis). La maggior parte avviene perché animali invisi ai pescatori, in pochi casi per alimentazione umana o per la pesca (esche). (UNEP/IUCN 1994). Cattura In passato catturati per delfinari. Recentemente non ci sono segnalazione negli ultimi 15 anni, anche per via di leggi nazionali ed accordi internazionali.

24 Perdita e degrado dell habitat Med Il Mediterraneo presenta tra il 4% e il 18% delle specie marine mondiali, su una superficie ed un volume rispettivamente dello 0.82% e 0.32% di tutti i mari del mondo. Bianchi e Morri (2000) suggeriscono che questa grande biodiversità sia spiegata da 2 fattori principali: 1. Il Mediterraneo è più vecchio di quasi tutti gli altri mari; 2. Presenta una complessa ecologia (varietà significativa di ambienti differenti dal punto di vista climatico ed idrogeologico). Tale biodiversità è attualmente minacciata da cambiamenti climatici e da impatto antropico. La riduzione dell habitat per i cetacei comporta problemi a diversi livelli: energetico, comportamentale, fisiologico.

25 Perdita e degrado dell habitat Med Livello energetico. La riduzione delle prede comporta già dei problemi per i cetaceti mediterranei. Livello fisiologico. Problemi riproduttivi e disfunzioni immunitarie sono collegati a cambiamenti ambientali, prevalentemente alla presenza di contaminanti. (mortalità di massa legate ad epidemie, morbillivirus ). Livello comportamentale. Molte attività umane introducono rumore che può generare notevole disturbo alla comunicazione e ad altre attività. Il rumore è previsto in aumento a causa dell incremento continuo di turisti costieri e dello sviluppo di industrie costiere inshore e offshore (acquacoltura, prospezioni geologiche, estrazione), nonché dell utilizzo di sonar attivi per scopi militari.

28 Disturbo Impatto a lungo termine - Cause indirette disturbo degli animali della catena trofica: pesci, cefalopodi, ecc. degrado e distruzione di habitats (aumento della torbidità dell acqua, ecc).

29 Mortalità naturale It is almost always impossible to affirm that a death is natural. A fatal viral infection may be the result of an immunity deficiency resulting from pollution. Accidents when giving birth may be due to disturbance. And what about a dolphin which plays with a plastic bag, ingests it accidentally and then dies? Would he not have done the same playing with natural bodies carried by the sea? A death is thus seen as natural when it does not seem to be linked to any non-natural factor, something extremely complex and often impossible to prove. Death is the result of various parameters that have combined or opposite effects, and these parameters may escape notice if the investigation is not carried far enough. ( ) We must however keep the non-natural factors at a level which is tolerable for the affected population. Thus, certain fishing techniques, use of such a product or of such a sonar, could be the subject of regulation or even a ban if they have an alarming share in the responsibility for the mortality of one or several species. 31 Minacce - Conclusione La pressione antropica è più intensa per le specie costiere come tursiope, delfino comune e focena. Tuttavia anche le specie pelagiche, come capodoglio e stenella, possono essere pericolosamente impattate. La principale difficoltà incontrata nel risolvere i problemi di conservazione dei cetacei del Mediterraneo è la mancanza di adeguate conoscenze relative alla taglia delle popolazioni, la distribuzione, il grado di separazione, i trends e le dinamiche per ogni specie.
