6 THE CLUSTERS: AN INNOVATIVE MODEL OF PARTICIPATION Expo Milano 2015 has been conceptualized with the ambition to bring the evolution of Universal Exhibitions one step further: an Expo where every program and project is developed putting the visitor experience at the center of the stage, and where the Theme is perceivable in every element of the Exposition, experienced from the very first step inside the site and in every interaction. This radical change of paradigm is particularly evident in the Cluster project. Traditionally the Countries unwilling or unable to participate in the Expositions building their own pavilion were grouped by the organizers under common structures, the joint pavilions, where the single Countries maintained inside an individual space to showcase themselves. Moreover the criteria for grouping Countries under the same joint pavilion have so far been geographical. Continental joint pavilions for Africa, Asia and South America were put in place, or others for significant regional territories and identities. However the idea behind Expo Milano 2015 is to address the theme in every element and in every project. Why not grouping Countries on a thematic basis, rather than geographical, then? Expo Milano 2015 has developed a participation model that allows Countries to select the solution that best suits their needs and projects. While maintaining the successful key elements of the tradition of Universal Expos, allowing many Countries to participate TITOLO PROGETTO

7 with their own sensibility and contribution, Expo Milano 2015 will introduce a significant innovation to the type of exhibition spaces and their placement. Countries will not be grouped according to a geographic principle but according to elements of the Expo theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. Working together with the Organizer in developing a common thematic exhibition area, Countries will also retain their identity by creating their own unique exhibition space. Furthermore this solution will allow Countries from different regions and continents to collaborate together, overcoming the traditional geographical divisions of the Exhibition Areas of Expos and therefore enhancing the Universal character of Expo Milano The Clusters area will be located across the whole site, enhancing the potential dialogue with other elements like thematic areas and other Countries autonomous pavilions. Corporate organizations, local authorities, international organizations and civil society can all offer their contribution in terms of events, exhibitions, funding and supporting, catering and commercial activities. Local authorities are already collaborating in the Clusters development with their interest in developing offsite touristic itineraries in the territories that have a strong connection with the theme of the Cluster. Also the private sector will be asked to come on board and support the development of Cluster project, both financially, as well as in terms of content. Lastly International organisations are being involved by participating in the Clusters development and by contributing to the thematic elaboration, offering scientific contributions and contents. 10 GENERAL INTRODUCTION The project that builds the identity of the cluster fruit and vegetables, translated in three different variations defined by a single compositional principle, borns from the historical experiences that have faced, in architecture, the themes of temporary, the representation of national values or ideals of public places for the exibition, so by the figuration, the visual arts and plastic. The iconic value of the exhibition theme is without distinction of time, without inheritance ordered, following a path that each step specifies its own choices. The distribution of public places and private national identity consists in a single story that takes place in the experience of the cluster. The project follows stwo different ideal paths: one space concatenated building sites and views continue facing out, as well as on the contrary, a different story collects public spaces in a single enclosure. Roofs layed, supported by columns and suspended or enclosers borders for exhibition makes evident the places of the community in their different characters. Strips of vegetables and rows of fruit trees bring to mind the patchwork composition of the agrarian landscape, reflecting the patterns of cultivation that create a vivid image of rural life and the emotion evoked by the orchard garden. The ten metre strip adjacent to the main access way with its alternating colours and textures of the vegetation recalls the geometric structuring with which human cultivation of the earth marks its impact. These strips of cultivation penetrate the site to engage with the lines of fruit trees that extend the geometry through the layout. Lemon and orange trees line the paths and lead into the exhibition area. Two rows of figs form a natural canopy for the food courtyard. A tight square of coconut palms announces the entrance to the event space. To the east a small romatic garden has a serpentine path snaking through a parterre of a variety of salad vegetables. The garden blends the free flowing ground cover with the structured grid of the fruit trees that provides a geometric regularity for the activities of the public spaces. In the first two projects, the large scale open wooden structure overhead supporting the vines, brings to mind the scale of the pergola that supports the grape vines of the vineyard. In the third scheme the enclosing timber trellis brings to mind the taxonomy of the eighteenth century botanical museum holding specimens of plants, or the structured plant trays of the contemporary nursery. 11 Il progetto che costruisce l identità del cluster frutta e legumi, tradotto in tre differenti varianti definite da un unico principio compositivo, trae le sue ragioni tanto dalle esperienze storiche che hanno affrontato in architettura i temi della provvisorietà, della rappresentazione di ideali valori nazionali o dei luoghi collettivi destinati al mostrare, tanto dalla raffigurazione, nelle arti figurative e plastiche, del valore iconico proprio del tema dell esporre. Questo senza discrimine temporale, senza successioni ordinate, seguendo un percorso che ad ogni avanzamento specifica le proprie scelte. La distribuzione dei luoghi collettivi e privati delle identità nazionali si compone in un unico racconto che si svolge nell esperienza del cluster seguendo due differenti percorsi: un unico spazio concatenato costruisce luoghi e affacci continui rivolto all esterno, così come al contrario una differente storia raccoglie gli spazi in un unico recinto. Coperture appoggiate e sospese, sorrette da pali o perimetri espositivi rendono evidenti i luoghi della collettività nei loro differenti caratteri. Ortaggi, alberi da frutto e frammenti di coltivazioni sono chiamati a definire un paesaggio composito e sorprendente in grado di offrire ai visitatori nello stesso tempo la memoria del lavoro agricolo e l emozione del giardino. La fascia di rispetto di dieci metri accoglie il disegno geometrico delle coltivazioni dell uomo con strisce di diversa larghezza dedicate alle colture dei paesi coinvolti. Le campiture coltivate si spingono sino all interno degli spazi comuni creando un bordo sfrangiato che si unisce alle prime alberature dei frutteti. Limoni e agrumi annunciano centralmente il passaggio allo spazio comune delle esposizioni; due filari di fichi fungono da copertura naturale allo spazio dedicato al ristoro. Un brano di palme da cocco annuncia l accesso laterale alla zona eventi. A est un piccolo giardino di sapore romantico alterna sinuosi parterre, formati da aiuole di insalata di diversa qualità e colore, a brani di frutteti a coltura mista, scanditi da filari rettilinei e sfrangiati che proseguono sulle pavimentazioni degli spazi collettivi offrendo una griglia di riferimento per le attività previste. In due soluzioni proposte la grande copertura lignea sostiene la vite, ricordando in altra scala la figure delle pergole dei vigneti. Nella terza proposta il grande recinto architettonico che segna l intero perimetro dell area configura i limiti del padiglione rivisitando per analogia il concetto di tassonomia biologica propria dei musei naturalistici ottocenteschi. La struttura lignea accoglie le specie vegetali dei paesi ospiti come un grande vivaio vivente, in cui la classificazione linneiana esplicita il carattere del padiglione dedicato a frutta e verdura. 14 The order created by the singular unity of the pavilions is used to build the sequence of public spaces, identified by a large scale suspended timber grid that brings to mind the pergola of the vineyard and the visual joke of the shadows that we find in the cultivated bosco. 24 The large scale architectonic perimeter fence defines the space of the project. The linear structure supports the vegetation like a gigantic living arbour, in which the plants extrapolate the character of the individual pavilions. The geometric patterning of human cultivation is represented by strips of planting that reflect the diversity of the cultures of the represented countries. The central gardens that define the successive public spaces are formed with a variety of fruit trees and coconut palms. Il grande recinto architettonico che segna l intero perimetro dell area segna i limiti del padiglione. La struttura lignea accoglie le specie vegetali come un grande erbario vivente, in cui la classificazione linneiana esplicita il carattere del padiglione. Il disegno geometrico delle coltivazioni dell uomo è rappresentato con strisce di diversa larghezza dedicate alle colture dei paesi coinvolti. Spazi verdi di cerniera collegano tra loro gli spazi collettivi posti in successione, sommandosi a brani di frutteti a coltura mista e ad un palmeto da cocco. ENCLOSED NATURE

34 Both in composition and figuratively, this project suggests a cultivated bosco. The idea of the tree evokes the seriality of column/lintel/ roof that clearly communicates the pleasures of living in a natural space. The ten metre strip adjacent to the main access way with its alternating colours and textures of the vegetation recalls the geometric structuring with which human cultivation of the earth marks its impact. Riferimento compositivo e figurativo del progetto è costituito dal bosco coltivato. L albero nella traduzione della serialità di colonna/trave/copertura identifica in modo esplicito l immagine il piacere di abitare lo spazio naturale. La fascia di rispetto di dieci metri accoglie il disegno geometrico delle coltivazioni dell uomo con strisce di diversa larghezza dedicate alle diverse colture che si spingono sino all interno degli spazi comuni creando un bordo sfrangiato che si unisce alle prime alberature dei frutteti.
