SPEAKERS EDWARD CHAPLIN HMA CMG OBE Edward Chaplin CMG, OBE is the British Ambassador to Italy and the Republic of San Marino. Mr. Chaplin took up this post on the 19th October 2006. Edward Chaplin entered the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1973, after graduating from Cambridge University. His first postings were Muscat and Brussels, together with one year at the École Nationale d Administration in Paris. On his return to London in 1979, he was appointed Private Secretary to Lord Soames, who had entered Margaret Thatcher s first cabinet as Lord President of the Council, Leader of the House of Lords and Minister for the Civil Service, with additional powers with regard to foreign and European affairs. Edward Chaplin was thus a member of Lord Soames staff when the latter was appointed Governor of Rhodesia in December 1979, and assigned the task of implementing the Lancaster House agreements and leading Rhodesia towards independence as the independent state of Zimbabwe in 1980. Mr. Chaplin returned to the FCO Near East and North Africa Department in 1981, as a functionary with responsibility for Lebanon, Israel and the Occupied Territories, before being sent to Teheran as Head of the Political Department in 1985. Having returned to London in 1987, Mr. Chaplin spent two years in the Personnel Department of the FCO, and then two years at Price Waterhouse Management Consultants in the City of London. In 1992 he was appointed Permanent Vice-Representative of Britain s mission at the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva. Mr. Chaplin returned to London once again in 1996, this time as Director of the Middle East Department of the FCO, during a period dominated by the relations of the international community with Iraq and Iran. He was appointed Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 2000, and then recalled in 2002 to take over as Director of the FCO for the Middle East and North Africa. In 2004, after the end of Saddam Hussein s regime in Iraq, Mr. Chaplin was appointed British Ambassador to Iraq, with the re-opening of the British Embassy after a break in relations between two countries lasting some 13 years. Immediately before his arrival in Italy, Mr. Chaplin spent 8 months of sabbatical leave as Visiting Fellow at the Centre of International Studies in Cambridge. Mr. Chaplin is married to Nicola, who is a teacher. At this very moment, their three children, Stephanie, Tom and Juliet, are completing their studies at universities of the UK. 10

EDWARD CHAPLIN HMA CMG OBE Edward Chaplin CMG, OBE è l Ambasciatore britannico presso la Repubblica italiana e San Marino. Il Sig.Chaplin ha assunto il suo incarico il 19 ottobre 2006. Edward Chaplin è entrato nel Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) nel 1973, dopo la Laurea conseguita presso l Università di Cambridge. Fra le prime sedi cui fu assegnato c erano Muscat e Bruxelles, nonché un anno presso l École Nationale d Administration di Parigi. Al suo ritorno a Londra nel 1979, fu nominato Segretario Privato di Lord Soames, che era entrato nel primo governo Thatcher come Lord Presidente del Consiglio, Leader della Camera dei Lord e Ministro della Funzione Pubblica, con competenza ulteriore per gli affari esteri ed europei. Faceva quindi parte dello staff di Lord Soames quando quest ultimo venne nominato Governatore della Rodesia, nel dicembre 1979, per attuare gli accordi di Lancaster House e portare il paese all indipendenza con il nome di Zimbabwe, nel 1980. Il Sig.Chaplin è tornato nel Dipartimento dell FCO per il Vicino Oriente ed il Nord Africa nel 1981, come funzionario con competenza per il Libano, Israele ed i Territori Occupati, prima di essere assegnato a Teheran nel 1985 in qualità di Capo della Sezione Politica. Tornato a Londra nel 1987, il Sig.Chaplin ha trascorso due anni nel Dipartimento del Personale dell FCO e quindi due anni presso Price Waterhouse Management Consultants nella City di Londra. Nel 1992, è stato nominato Vice-Rappresentante Permanente presso la Missione britannica all ONU ed altre Organizzazioni Internazionali a Ginevra. Il Sig.Chaplin è tornato a Londra nel 1996 come Direttore del Dipartimento Medio Oriente dell FCO, in un periodo dominato dai rapporti della comunità internazionale con Iraq ed Iran. È stato nominato Ambasciatore presso il Regno Ascemita di Giordania nel 2000 e quindi richiamato nel 2002 per assumere l incarico di Direttore del FCO per Medio Oriente e Nord Africa. Nel 2004, dopo la fine del regime di Saddam Hussein, il Sig.Chaplin è stato nominato Ambasciatore britannico in Iraq, istituendo l Ambasciata dopo un interruzione nelle relazioni fra i due paesi durata 13 anni. LAURENCE BRISTOW-SMITH HM CG Laurence Bristow-Smith hails from Hastings on the south coast of England. He studied at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where he graduated in English Language and Literature (with a final year thesis on Art History and Architecture) in 1976. Thereafter he stayed on at Newcastle University to work as an assistant lecturer, and to study the work of the British artist and illustrator born in China, Mervyn Peake, for which he was awarded his Ph.D. in 1980. The same year, after a short period as an ice vendor, he started working in a professional capacity for the Moroccan government, as Educational Adviser at Rabat University. In 1985 he returned to the UK where he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, working for the Department for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. After having studied Chinese at the London School of African and Oriental Studies, he lived for a time in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, dealing with economic and trade matters in those countries. In 1992 he returned to the Foreign Office in London, where he worked as Head of the Chinese section for two years, before moving on to the Ministry of Trade and Industry. At this Ministry he worked with British companies in the energy and water sectors, in order to export experience gained in the UK in the field of privatisation, and to fund important infrastructural projects in Asia and Eastern Europe, the latter having to deal with the initial phase immediately subsequent to the fall of communism. He worked in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Croatia in the weeks leading up to the Dayton Agreement. He also made nine trips to Kosovo in the months following the Serbian withdrawal. During that same period, he taught International Economics as an expert in the decentralisation of the former socialist economies. In 2000 he moved to Norway, where he was appointed Director of Trade and Investment at the British Embassy in Oslo. This transfer allowed him to spend more time with his two children, who had previously been made orphans in 1998, and also to spend time sailing, his favourite pastime. In 2004 he remarried with an English sculptor and interior designer, and in 2005 he moved to Milan to be Deputy Consul General. Since November 2007, his appointment as Consul General and General Director for Trade and Investment reflects his longstanding personal interest in the world of business and trade. During the entire course of his career, Laurence Bristow- Smith has continued to write about things that interest him, to review books, and to write and direct amateur theatrical works, in particular pantomimes. He has also written a musical still to be performed - and numerous songs, some of which have been recorded. Laurence speaks fluent Chinese and French, as well as Italian, Norwegian and Arabic. He loves cooking, sailing and the dramas of the Elizabethan and Jacobean period. He has recently published a book on the English artist Alan Rankle, and has a project to write a book on the English writer and diplomat Harold Nicolson as well one day when he ll have some time for this. 12

LAURENCE BRISTOW-SMITH HM CG Laurence Bristow-Smith è originario di Hastings, sulla costa meridionale dell Inghilterra. Laurence è ritornato al Foreign Office a Londra nel 1992 dove è stato per due anni a capo della Sezione Cinese, prima di passare al Ministero del Commercio e Industria dove ha collaborato con le aziende inglesi nel settore dell energia e dell acqua, con il compito di esportate l esperienza britannica in fatto di privatizzazioni e di finanziamento di importanti progetti di infrastrutture in tutta l Asia e l Europa dell Est nelle prime fasi successive alla caduta del comunismo. Ha operato in Bosnia Erzegovina e in Croazia nelle settimane precedenti alla tregua di Dayton, e ha fatto nove viaggi nel Kosovo nei mesi successivi al ritiro della Serbia. Nello stesso periodo, era docente in International Economics quale esperto di decentralizzazione delle economie ex-socialiste. Nel 2000 si e trasferito in Norvegia dove è diventato Direttore per il Commercio e gli Investimenti presso l Ambasciata Britannica di Oslo. Questo lavoro gli ha permesso di passare più tempo con i suoi due figli rimasti orfani nel 1998 - e di andare più spesso in barca a vela, il suo hobby preferito. Nel 2004 si è risposato con una scultrice e interior designer inglese e nel 2005 si è spostato a Milano con l incarico di Console Generale Aggiunto. Da novembre 2007, Il suo nuovo incarico di Console Generale e Direttore Generale per il Commercio e gli Investimenti riflette il lungo e personale interesse per il mondo economico e commerciale. Durante tutto il corso della sua carriera, Laurence ha continuato a scrivere su argomenti di suo interesse, a recensire libri e a scrivere e dirigere opere teatrali amatoriali, in particolare pantomime. Ha inoltre scritto un musical - non ancora messo in scena - e numerose canzoni, alcune delle quali sono state già registrate. Laurence parla correntemente cinese e francese, oltre all italiano, norvegese e arabo. Ama cucinare, andare a vela e i drammi dell epoca Elisabettiana e Giacobina. Ha recentemente pubblicato un libro sull artista inglese Alan Rankle, e ha in progetto di scrivere anche un libro sullo scrittore e diplomatico inglese Harold Nicolson - un giorno quando avrà un po di tempo. 13

DANNY LOPEZ Managing Director, Marketing Group UKTI Danny Lopez grew up in Spain. Upon moving to the UK in 1992, he entered at Barclays Bank in 1996, where he occupied important positions within the international sector, as Director of Business Banking USA, Head of Inward Investment and Business Development Director for Barclays Commercial Banking Operations in India. In July 2006 he started at the UK Trade & Investment as Managing Director, Marketing, in charge of the realisation of the new marketing strategy of UKTI, promoting the force of British economy within the context of globalisation. He is also member of the Board of Directors of UKTI. Danny Lopez has a BA (Hons) in Economy and a Master degree in Economy and International Finances at the University of Essex. His interests include running, tennis, golf, travelling, film, motors and history. 14

MASSIMO CAPUANO CEO Borsa Italiana S.p.A. Massimo Capuano has been Vice Chief Executive Officer of the London Stock Exchange Group since the 1st October 2007, and Chief Executive Officer of Borsa Italiana S.p.A since January 1998, the year the company was privatised. Borsa Italiana s Board of Directors have given him full executive powers for the development and management of the equity, bond and derivatives markets organised by Borsa Italiana S.p.A. Within the Borsa Italiana Group, Mr. Capuano is Vice Chairman of the Cassa di Compensazione e Garanzia SpA and Vice-Chairman of Monte Titoli SpA, with full powers regarding international business; Chairman of BIt Systems, the company providing the market with ICT services; and a Member of the Supervisory Board of MTS, the company managing the Government Bond market. He was also the President of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) for the two-year period 2007-2008 and Special Advisor of the Board of the Federation of European Stock Exchanges (FESE) in 2008. He has been a Member of the Board of the Federation of European Stock Exchanges (FESE) since 2007. He was formerly the President of the Federation of European Stock Exchanges (FESE) for the period 2004-2006. He is Member of the International Advisory Committee of the Cairo and Alexandria Stock Exchanges. Previously he has worked for: McKinsey (1986-97) as a senior partner, mainly in the Financial Institution sector at the European level and for Information Technology industries. In particular he was leader of the office in Milan and member of the European group within the banking industry. His main experiences include leading the projects for remodelling the Italian financial markets, the creation of the financial zone for large groups of Italian banks, of the private banking of international banks, and the programme for international growth of one of the world s main multinational IT companies. IBM (1980-86), as an engineer specialised in Information Technology services, planning, marketing of applications for major financial institutions, banks and insurance companies. Rank Xerox (1979-80), as head of the technical assistance service in the south. Massimo Capuano is 53 years old, married, has two daughters, and graduated in electro-technical engineering from the University of Rome with maximum votes and cum laude. He is a Freeman of the City of London. 16
