Palazzo Falier Palazzo Falier è una costruzione gotica, probabilmente della prima metà del XV secolo, che ha subito numerose modifiche in tempi diversi: caratteristiche uniche sono le due logge coperte, o liagò, ai lati della polifora centrale, che si ergono a filo del Canal Grande poggiando sulla facciata dell edificio che risulta pertanto arretrata. Si è supposto che tali elementi fossero un aggiunta ottocentesca: in realtà essi sono le uniche strutture di liagò quattrocentesco, così come esso viene presentato nei dipinti di Vettore Carpaccio. Il palazzo è appartenuto per alcuni secoli ai Falier, antica famiglia patrizia che risulta stanziata nella contrada di San Vidal dove appunto sorge l edificio fin dal IX secolo. Alla volontà di Vitale Falier, primo doge della casata (1084-1096) pare si debba la costruzione della prima chiesa, rifabbricata poi nel Settecento, dedicata al santo suo omonimo. Come ricorda un episodio dei mosaici marciani del XIV secolo, questo stesso Vitale avrebbe riscoperto le spoglie di San Marco delle quali, sepolte nella cappella palatina, si erano perdute le tracce. Inoltre fu lui che consacrò, nel 1094, la terza ricostruzione della basilica di San Marco. Alla stirpe dei Falier, ma ad un altra linea, appartiene anche Marino che fu doge tra il 1354 e il 1355 e giustiziato pro criminibus contro la Repubblica, come si legge nella sala del Maggior Consiglio a Palazzo Ducale Oltre che impegnati nell amministrazione e difesa dello Stato i Falier furono anche mecenati delle Arti; Giovanni infatti, che morì dopo la caduta della Serenissima e che fu padre di Francesco, ricoprì le più alte cariche della marina veneziana, e fu grande protettore di Antonio Canova, del quale aveva intuito il talento fin dalla giovane età. Nonostante gli interventi che nel corso dei secoli hanno modificato la struttura del palazzo, esso conserva ancora in buona parte integre le sue caratteristiche originarie nel lungo e stretto portego che si affaccia con la sua ricca polifora sul Canal Grande, affiancato dai due avancorpi dei liagò, oggi due eleganti salottini, dai quali è possibile ammirare l animazione della via d acqua più bella della città. Ubicato a due passi da Campo Santo Stefano, tra Palazzo Grassi ed il ponte dell Accademia, occupa una superficie di circa 750 mq, oltre ai 150 mq del suo monumentale androne, e può ospitare eventi pubblici e privati quali manifestazioni culturali, mostre, produzioni cinematografiche e simili. Palazzo Falier is a gothic building dating from the beginning of the 15th century: a few structural changes date from the end of the 18th century, notably regarding the second main floor, yet the whole palace remains the same with the two unique liagò, covered loggias on two sides of the building leading onto the Grand Canal whilst the central façade with six gothic windows remains in the middle and a little behind. We can find some examples of these liagò in the paintings by Vittore Carpaccio and Gentile Bellini. The palace belonged for some centuries to the Falier, an old patrician family that was present in this area of Venice since the 9th century. It seems that Vitale Falier, first dogeof the family (1084-1096), was the constructor of the previous church of San Vidal, rebuilt in the 18th century, in fact dedicated to the saint of his name. As remembered in the mosaics in the Basilica, this same Vitale Falier was the one who rediscovered the corpse of Saint Marc, lost in the Saint Chapel. He also consecrated in 1094 the third reconstruction of the basilica of Saint Marc. To another part of the same family belongs the famous Marino Falier, the doge that in 1355 was executed pro criminibus against the Serenissima, as written on the black canvas that covers his face in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, in the Doge s Palace. The Falier were also sailors, Capitani da mar and protectors of the arts, as did Giovanni with Antonio Canova. As one can see, Palazzo Falier could maintain through the centuries its original structure with the long portego facing onto the Grand Canal, the little garden and the two liagò overlooking the most beautiful water way of the town. Two steps away from Campo Santo Stefano, located between Palazzo Grassi and the Accademia bridge, the pianonobile Falier covers more then 750 sq/mt plus 150 sq/mt of its monumental entrance and can be used for public or private events as music concerts, exhibitions, films, photo productions and similar.
