6 Innovation in oral care awards Funder: International Association for Dental Research & GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) Objective: Awards aim to advance oral care programmes directed toward the development of innovative and novel compounds, biomaterials or devices that can be used ultimately at the public health level. Proposals may address: inhibition or removal of biofilms adhering to natural or artificial surfaces; modification of those surfaces to inhibit biofilms and other deposits, stains and odours; adhesives for removable prosthetic devices; inhibition of tooth surface loss and gingival recession, and amelioration of their effects; counteracting the oral effects of dry mouth, systemic illness, hormonal disturbances or physiological ageing. Applicants must possess advanced degrees and must hold an affiliation with an academic centre, non-profit institution or for-profit entity such as a biotechnology start-up. The principal investigator must be a current member of, or at the time of submission have made bona fide application for membership in the association. Award amount max USD 50,000 per award (3 awards each for up to 2 years) Closing date 09 dic 17 (Forecast) Ref.

7 Small grant programme for new investigators (R03): Aids-related [PAR ] Funder: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research Objective: basic and clinical research conducted by scientists who are in the early stages of establishing an independent research career in oral, dental and craniofacial research. The programme supports pilot or feasibility studies and development research projects with the intention of obtaining sufficient preliminary data for a subsequent investigator initiated research project grant (R01) or equivalent application. New investigators at US and foreign profit and not-for-profit organisations may apply. Award amount max up to USD 200,000 over a two-year period may be requested. Budgets should not exceed USD 100,000 in direct costs in either year. Closing date 07 mag 17 Ref.

8 Building genetics and genomic knowledge about dental, oral and craniofacial diseases and disorders (R01): Aids-related [PAR ] Funder: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research Objective: This Aids-related R01 funding opportunity announcement encourages research into dental, oral, and craniofacial diseases and disorders for which there is evidence for genetic heritability but for which there is no strong understanding of the genetics or genomics of the disease or disorder. Research areas may include identification of promising areas of the genome, and characterisation and elucidation of the functions of genetic variants that affect disease risk in humans. The goal is to drive development of effective diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive approaches. Domestic and foreign for-profit and non-profit organisations and public or private institutions are eligible to apply. Award amount max Not limited. The maximum project period is 5 years, for requests of USD 500,000 or more for direct costs in any year more actions are required. 9 Immune system plasticity in the pathogenesis and treatment of complex dental, oral, and craniofacial diseases (R21) Aids related [PAR ] Funder: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research Objective: This Aids-related announcement supports contemporary, systematic research to elucidate the role of immune system plasticity in health and in the pathogenesis of dental, oral and craniofacial diseases as well as to develop novel tools and technologies to treat and prevent disease based on precise modulation of the immune system. Plasticity, for the purposes of this initiative, is defined as the ability of the immune system to undergo changes in both characteristics and functions in response to the environment. Clinical trials are not supported. US and foreign for-profit and non-profit organisations and public and private organisations are eligible to apply. Award amount max USD 275,000 in direct costs with up to USD 200,000 in direct costs per year. The maximum project period is 2 years. Closing date next deadline 07 mag 17 (Applications due by 5pm local time of applicant organisation on every 7 January, 7 May and 7 September until 8 September ) Ref.

10 HUMAN FRONTIERS SCIENCE PROGRAMME (HFSP) Objective: Topics covered range from molecular and cellular approaches to biological functions to systems neuroscience including cognitive functions. The HFSP funds novel collaborations that bring scientists with distinct expertise together to focus on problems at the frontiers of the life sciences. Young Investigators Grants: it is to be expected that outstanding young scientists, in the initial period of their independent careers, are in a particularly good position to formulate innovative and fertile research projects. Program Grants: they are meant to allow teams of independent researchers to develop new lines of research through the collaboration. Priority will be given to new, innovative research projects for which preliminary results might not necessarily be available. Applications including independent investigators early in their careers are encouraged. The HFSP funds basic research. Projects of a primarily pathophysiological nature are not supported. Nor does the HFSP support projects of a purely applied nature. Award amount (for both grants) up to USD 450,000 per year for the whole team depending on the size of the team (3 years) Closing dates LOI 30 March Early Notification for submission of full application July FULL APPLICATION mid September 2017 Ref. 10

12 AIRC Finanziamenti 2017 Investigator Grant - IG 2017 Deadline: 09 Mar 2017 These grants are intended to support the research on cancer by established and independent scientists with a strong commitment in cancer research, leading an existing research unit. My First AIRC Grant (MFAG) Transition to independence Deadline: 02 Mar 2017 These grants are intended to encourage talented young researchers with a strong commitment in cancer research, who have never obtained an AIRC grant before, to submit their research proposals Start-Up Grant 2017 Deadline: 02 Mar 2017 The objective of the AIRC Start-Up program is to foster the birth and growth of new research units under the leadership of talented young scientists, with a strong commitment in cancer research, seeking the opportunity of becoming independent investigators in Italy after a successful research experience abroad. 12

13 FONDAZIONE CARIPLO Ricerca biomedica condotta da giovani ricercatori (APRILE 2017) rivolto a giovani ricercatori che decidano di svolgere attività di ricerca presso un ente ospitante (con sede operativa in Regione Lombardia, provincia di Novara, provincia di Verbania) ammissibile al contributo della Fondazione. Ricerca biomedica sulle malattie legate all invecchiamento (APRILE 2017) il bando è rivolto a enti che svolgano direttamente attività di ricerca scientifica nell ambito identificato e dispongano di risorse umane e strumentali per lo svolgimento della medesima. Con riferimento alla territorialità delle suddette organizzazioni, si richiede che il capofila dei partenariati proponenti abbia la sede operativa del progetto nell area di riferimento della Fondazione Cariplo (Lombardia e province di Novara e Verbania). Tale requisito non riguarda i partner. 13
