3 Weighted interval scheduling In interval scheduling we are given a set of intervals I={(si, fi) i=1, 2, 3,, n}, where (si, fi) is the i-th interval The goal is to find the subset J of I such that no two intervals in J overlap; J is as large as possible. Greedy works here! In the weighted variant each interval has a weight wi The goal is to find the subset J with the largest total weight

4 Puzzled Luci al Pirellone (da Olimpiadi Italiane di Informatica, 2005) Il Pirellone è un noto grattacielo di Milano, in cui le finestre sono disposte ordinatamente per N righe (piani) e M colonne. Le righe sono numerate da 1aN (dall alto in basso) e le colonne da 1 a M (da sinistra a destra). Non tutti i dipendenti spengono la luce dei loro u ci, la sera prima di uscire. Quindi alcune finestre rimangono illuminate e tocca al custode provvedere a spegnerle. Per facilitare il compito del custode, sono stati predisposti N + M interruttori speciali, con un funzionamento particolare. Ci sono N interruttori di riga e M interruttori di colonna. Quando il custode agisce sull i-esimo interruttore di riga, tutte le luci accese dell i-esima riga si spengono ma, allo stesso tempo, quelle spente si accendono! Analogamente alle righe, un interruttore di colonna spegne le luci accese di quella colonna e accende quelle spente. Aiuta il custode a decidere quali degli N + M interruttori azionare al fine di spegnere tutte le luci delle finestre del Pirellone. Data la configurazione iniziale di luci, il custode deve verificare se sia possibile spegnere le luci con gli interruttori speciali e, in tal caso, deve specificare anche su quali interruttori agire. Altrimenti, stabilisce che è necessario utilizzare gli interruttori tradizionali.

5 L input contiene nella prima riga gli interi N e M, ovvero il numero di righe e di colonne del Pirellone, rispettivamente. Ognuna delle successive N righe contiene una sequenza di M valori 0 oppure 1, separati da uno spazio. La sequenza contenuta nell i-esima di tale righe rappresenta lo stato delle luci nell i-esima riga (piano) del Pirellone. In particolare, il j-esimo valore in tale riga indica se la j-esima luce è accesa (valore = 1) oppure spenta (valore = 0). L output deve contenere due linee per indicare su quali interruttori deve agire il custode. La prima linea contiene una sequenza di N valori (0 oppure 1) separati da uno spazio, per rappresentare le operazioni che il custode deve effettuare sugli interruttori di riga. L i-esimo valore della sequenza indica se il custode deve agire sull interruttore dell i-esima riga (valore = 1) oppure no (valore = 0). Analogamente, la seconda linea contiene una sequenza di M valori (0 oppure 1) separati da uno spazio, per rappresentare le operazioni che il custode deve effettuare sugli interruttori di colonna. Il j-esimo valore della sequenza indica se il custode deve agire sull interruttore della j-esima colonna oppure no.

7 La Scala (da Olimpiadi Italiane di Informatica, 2003) Un gradino è un rettangolo che giace sul piano cartesiano, i cui lati sono paralleli ai due assi. Una scala è una sequenza di gradini con le seguenti proprietà: i lati inferiori di tutti i gradini giacciono sull asse X; il lato sinistro del primo gradino giace sull asse Y; il lato sinistro di ogni gradino successivo al primo giace sul lato destro del gradino precedente; le altezze dei gradini sono strettamente decrescenti. Figure 1: Un esempio di scala Supponete di avere un insieme di punti sul piano cartesiano le cui coordinate sono numeri interi positivi. Il vostro obiettivo è di trovare una scala tale che tutti i punti dell insieme giacciano nell area sottesa alla scala (oppure, sul bordo della scala stessa). Fra tutte le scale possibili, volete

8 sceglierne una che minimizzi l area sottesa. Il programma legge i dati punti da input. Sulla prima riga è indicato un singolo numero intero N che è il numero di punti. Su ciascuna delle successive N righe è indicato un punto, espresso attraverso le sue coordinate x e y (due numeri interi separati da uno spazio). L output sarà formato da una sola riga contenente l area della scala di area minima. La figura 2 mostra i punti dell esempio e una scala di area minima che li contiene tutti. 9 Is Bigger Smarter? PC/UVa IDs: /10131, Popularity: B, Success rate: high Level: 2 Some people think that the bigger an elephant is, the smarter it is. To disprove this, you want to analyze a collection of elephants and place as large a subset of elephants as possible into a sequence whose weights are increasing but IQ s are decreasing. Input The input will consist of data for a bunch of elephants, at one elephant per line terminated by the end-of-file. The data for each particular elephant will consist of a pair of integers: the first representing its size in kilograms and the second representing its IQ in hundredths of IQ points. Both integers are between 1 and 10,000. The data contains information on at most 1,000 elephants. Two elephants may have the same weight, the same IQ, or even the same weight and IQ. Output The first output line should contain an integer n, the length of elephant sequence found. The remaining n lines should each contain a single positive integer representing an elephant. Denote the numbers on the ith data line as W [i] and S[i]. If these sequence of n elephants are a[1], a[2],..., a[n] then it must be the case that W [a[1]] <W[a[2]] <... < W [a[n]] and S[a[1]] >S[a[2]] >... > S[a[n]]i In order for the answer to be correct, n must be as large as possible. All inequalities are strict: weights must be strictly increasing, and IQs must be strictly decreasing. Your program can report any correct answer for a given input.

Each of the 5,607 turtles ordered by Yertle has a different weight and strength. Your task is to build the largest stack of turtles possible. Input Standard input consists of several lines, each containing a pair of integers separated by one or more space characters, specifying the weight and strength of a turtle. The weight of the turtle is in grams. The strength, also in grams, is the turtle s overall carrying capacity, including its own weight. That is, a turtle weighing 300 g with a strength of 1,000 g can carry 700 g of turtles on its back. There are at most 5,607 turtles. He has a very big family there, all of them living on Lamafia Avenue. Since he will visit all his relatives very often, he wants to find a house close to them. Indeed, Vito wants to minimize the total distance to all of his relatives and has blackmailed you to write a program that solves his problem. Input The input consists of several test cases. The first line contains the number of test cases. For each test case you will be given the integer number of relatives r (0 <r<500) and the street numbers (also integers) s 1,s 2,...,s i,...,s r where they live (0 <s i < 30, 000). Note that several relatives might live at the same street number. Output For each test case, your program must write the minimal sum of distances from the optimal Vito s house to each one of his relatives. 13 9.6.1 Bicoloring PC/UVa IDs: /10004, Popularity: A, Success rate: high Level: 1 The four-color theorem states that every planar map can be colored using only four colors in such a way that no region is colored using the same color as a neighbor. After being open for over 100 years, the theorem was proven in 1976 with the assistance of a computer. Here you are asked to solve a simpler problem. Decide whether a given connected graph can be bicolored, i.e., can the vertices be painted red and black such that no two adjacent vertices have the same color. To simplify the problem, you can assume the graph will be connected, undirected, and not contain self-loops (i.e., edges from a vertex to itself). Input The input consists of several test cases. Each test case starts with a line containing the number of vertices n, where 1 <n<200. Each vertex is labeled by a number from 0 to n 1. The second line contains the number of edges l. After this, l lines follow, each containing two vertex numbers specifying an edge. An input with n = 0 marks the end of the input and is not to be processed. Output Decide whether the input graph can be bicolored, and print the result as shown below.

19 3.8.3 Common Permutation PC/UVa IDs: /10252, Popularity: A, Success rate: average Level: 1 Given two strings a and b, print the longest string x of letters such that there is a permutation of x that is a subsequence of a and there is a permutation of x that is a subsequence of b. Input The input file contains several cases, each case consisting of two consecutive lines. This means that lines 1 and 2 are a test case, lines 3 and 4 are another test case, and so on. Each line contains one string of lowercase characters, with first line of a pair denoting a and the second denoting b. Each string consists of at most 1,000 characters.
