1 Call: H2020-EE-205--PPP ENERGY EFFICIENCY-PPP EEB AND SPIRE TOPICS Topic: EE Buildings design for new highly energy performing buildings Specific Challenge: By the end of 2020, all new buildings should comply with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive obligation (nearly zero-energy performance level) using innovative, cost-optimal technologies with integration of renewable energy sources. The construction of plus-energy buildings should reduce energy, and increase the consumption of renewable energies. Scope: Projects should focus on development and demonstration of solutions which reduce the costs of new buildings with nearly zero-energy performance levels. Also provide solutions for cost-effective maintenance of the installed equipment, and differences between predicted and actual energy performance. Projects should also focus on design methods for on-site and nearby generation of renewable energy for new buildings accompanying energy efficiency measures to achieve standards higher than those of "nearly zero-energy" buildings. The activities are expected to be implemented at TRL 5-7. Expected Impact: Significant increase of the share of 'nearly zero-energy' buildings with the aim of 00% market uptake by the end of Costs reductions of at least 5% compared to current situation, with additional benefits in terms of energy reduction. Demonstration for net-zero energy districts taking advantage of onsite or nearbygeneration of renewable energy

2 Build Des-HEP project Build Des-HEP: Buildings design for new highly energy performing buildings In order to reach the 2020 targets of reducing energy consumption ( ), expressed in two directives, we would like, by Build Des-HEP Project, to design methods to increase energy efficiency in new buildings (nearly zero-energy performance level). On the one hand, the Directive 202/27/EU ( proposes to reduce by 20% in fossil energy consumption, and on the other hand, the Directive 2002/9/EC ( aims at the energy efficiency in buildings. The project aims at reducing the costs of new buildings with nearly zero-energy performance levels, in particular when new districts are designed. Therefore we will mainly focus on new cost-effective, costs saving, onsite, long-lasting time quality buildings design and on plus energy buildings, not simply regarded as consumer but also as producer of energy. Buildings should increase energy performance by using on-site renewable energy and innovative passive and active solutions to reduce costs. Automatic and cost-effective maintenance of the installed equipment is another important target of the project, able to reduce the predicted and the actual energy efficiency, the costs and to increase quality. The previous innovative solutions will be assessed by LCA, while the technologies used in the project will be checked through technology verification schemes (such as EU Environmental Technology Verification -ETVhttp://iet.jrc.ec.europa.eu/etv/). Workshops and awareness campaign on new sustainable buildings design methods (BIM - Building Information Modelling and Management - for engineers and architects) will be provided to the stakeholders, as well as to the public administration and the possible buyers, in order to promote innovative, ecological and cost-effective buildings design in the background of property market. As a result, the project will be faster, cheaper, sustainable and of higher design quality compared to traditional buildings design methods. Finally BIM will facilitate both the cooperation among architects and engineers, and the maintenance of buildings, as it is based in the international interoperability standards which can be read by any HW/SW system, using the same standard interface. It has also been demonstrated that the costs of a building can be reduced by even 20% if BIM is properly adopted by each professional working in the building sector. Indeed, the reduced time to transfer technical information among different professionals, and the lack of mistakes due to data entry in different computer system, save time and increase quality. 2

3 Target Actual situation Foreseen activity project Public Administration At the present time there is a legal support for the use of innovative methods and increased use of renewable energies in the construction sector. However, a greater economic support in the information, on the advantages of sustainable buildings, is required. Workshops and meeting studies to introduce the different innovative methods in buildings design, with an increased use of onsite renewable energy, passive solutions and share of renewable energies (Plus energy), thus giving information about the benefits (costs savings and the high sustainable impact). Architects and engineers Installers and Maintainer Customers Architects and Engineers relationship is not usually characterized by collaboration. Both professional groups should work together to reach the near-zero energy level with a common buildings design but, above all, they should use BIM which provides the framework for collaborative working environments. These professional groups usually use very invasive methods and a high percentage of fossil energy. More energetically efficient methods should be applied. Possible buyers generally don t know the advantages of near zero energy building performance. They are usually afraid by the initial costs not considering the future benefits. Architects and Engineers should be provided with E-learning and courses (Knowledge transfer) on energy efficient buildings design in order to use BIM as a logical application in the design process. Informing installers and maintainer on innovative, onsite, sustainable and costeffective maintenance methods on the installed equipment to reach nearly zero energy performance. They should also be informed on BIM, to have more technical information of the equipment they install for future maintenance. Awareness campaign and documentation for possible buyers, to explain the advantages (i.e. costs savings, long-lasting quality) of the new and sustainable buildings design methods, based on renewable energy and on its sharing (Plus energy) to cut down existing market barriers. A Scenario of a self-sustainable district will also be publicized. In order to achieve the aforementioned objectives and targets, the following Work Packages are foreseen: 3
