Abstract In the present work, an apparatus which permits time-resolved probing of the magnetic order on a time scale of picoseconds is described. The magnetization is sensed by the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), i.e., the change of the polarization state of the light reflected by a magnetized medium. In our setup, the polar Kerr geometry is used. A picosecond laser beam is focused on the sample after passing through a linear polarizer. The intensity of the reflected beam is detected by a photodiode after an analyzer nearly crossed to the polarizer. The Kerr signal is proportional to the intensity of the incident light. It becomes an accurately measurable quantity provided that the background is kept sufficiently low. The output of the ps-laser (typical pulse length 30 ps, X = 577 run) is divided into a pump and a probe pulse by a beam splitter. The time resolution is achieved by ah optical delay (7 ns max.) between the pulses. To compensate for the energy variations of the laser pulses, a small fraction of the probe pulse is detected by a reference photodiode. The laser intensity is measured on a shot-to-shot basis. When a ferromagnet is heated by a short laser pulse, the radiation energy is first absorbed by the electrons, which thermalize in a few picoseconds with the crystal lattice. The coupling between phonons and magnons is much weaker, therefore the spin system follows the temperature rise of the lattice after a significant delay. The spin-lattice relaxation time, i.e., the characteristic time needed for the energy transfer from the lattice to the spin system, was measured directly with timeresolved Kerr effect measurements for amorphous rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) alloys and for a Co/Pt multilayer. Amorphous RE-TM alloys thin films, a few times the light penetration depth thick, are the standard magneto-optical (MO) recording materials. Co/Pt multilayers, due to their larger Kerr rotation at short wavelength, are the potential materials for the next-generation MO media. Information is stored on MO disks by thermomagnetic writing, that is, the recording medium is heated up locally by a laser pulse. Under the influence of an opposite external magnetic field or the demagnetizing field, the magnetization switches as soon as the external field exceeds the coercive field and information is written in the form of a magnetic domain. The 5
spin-lattice relaxation time sets a limit to the rate at which data can be written on a MO disk. Its knowledge is therefore important from a technological as well as from a fundamental point The spin-lattice relaxation time xsl of view. has been determined for an a- Gdi3Tbi2Fe75 alloy to be 75±30 ps at ambient temperature (T 297 K). For = the Co/Pt multilayer 10 A Pt (12 A Pt, 4 A Co)xl0 with an underlayer of 100 A Pt evaporated on a Si substrate, rs( was found to be 46±30 ps at T=312K. Further, the magnetization reversal process during thermomagnetic writing was investigated on a picosecond time scale. For the RE-TM alloys the magnetization switching takes place only considerably higher than that required for the spins at laser fluences to reach the Curie temperature. At these laser fluences the spin temperature stays above the Curie temperature for a few nanoseconds. In contrast, with the Co/Pt multilayer the magnetization switches at the same laser fluence needed to reach the Curie temperature. With this sample, thermomagnetic writing is accomplished in 2 ns. 6
