The foundation stone was aid in 1386 whist the ast bronze on the right side of the façade was instaed in 1965. Over the years, competing the construction work of one of the biggest Christian cathedras in the word and ooking after it has aways been a difficut task. The Duomo s vita statistics are testimony to the monument s size and how hard it is to maintain: the interna surface measures 11,700 square metres; it houses 3.400 statues, 55 stained gass windows, 135 spires and 150 gutters. It is an inimitabe heritage site that needs to be protected and passed down generations for posterity. The Cathedra (Duomo in Itaian) was buit using a unique type of white marbe with ovey rose, bue and green stripes running through it. Once the marbe reaches Mian, it is then transferred to a manufacturing site: the marbe cutting faciity, where highy skied stone cutters and scuptors transform the raw marbe bocks into statues, ornaments, capitas, gutters and a the unique architectura eements that have made the Duomo famous a over the word. The imnt restoration project in 1969 soved probems inked to the static of the four coumns of the antern which were damaged by the strong subsidence of the phreatic aquifer and vibrations caused by urban traffic. The restoration was preceded by more than 10 years of studies and trias. This project was conceived as an effort to consoidate the 21 secondary coumns and, from 1981 to 1984, to repair damage suffered by the four main coumns under the antern: definitivey restoring strength and efficiency to the Duomo s core static system. Since 2012, the VFB has invited institutions, companies The Duomo Facts and figures and citizens to add their names to the Adotta una Gugia (Get your Spire) campaign. The campaign was set up to fund new and urgent restoration projects costing tens of miions of Euros: the VFB needs this money in order to continue to maintain and improve Mian s great cathedra. Anyone can participate in the Get your Spire project: from the imnt internationa companies that obtained an exceptiona permit to sponsor a big advertising screen, to individuas who with sma amounts of money or private donations can become part of a patrons register which updates them on the restoration work taking pace. Thanks to the efforts of many benefactors, numerous restoration projects are currenty taking pace with 12 restoration faciities working together. The most imnt project is the work on the Duomo s Main Spire which supports the Madonnina (the statue of the Virgin Mary), and the four itte spires surrounding it. Restoration is aso under way for 129 other minor spires and various structures which cover the roof. There are other ongoing projects which must end on November 4th 2013, when the Duomo Museum wi reopen and the VFB Archive wi be refitted. This is part of a compex chaenge for everyone who is fond of fine arts, and there is a big goa to reach: to return the Duomo to Mian and the word just in time for the 2015 Word Expo. Ordinary tickets cost 1.50 and can be obtained in Metro stations (newsagents, automatic machines, ticket offices in some stations), and from bars dispaying the green and orange ATM sticker on the window. Weeky, monthy or yeary season tickets are avaiabe. The argest ATM ticket saes and info offices are the ATM Point information offices in Duomo, Cadorna, Centrae, Loreto and Romoo Metro stations, open Mon-Sat 7.45-19.00. The ordinary ticket shoud be franked using the machine as soon as you get on a bus or tram, or go through the Metro turnsties, or before getting on an FNM train.
