SALVI S TRAVELLING SUITCASES The sculptures of Italian artist Fausto Salvi are born from the ancient world of maiolica an antique form of richly enamelled earthenware pottery, the surface of which is highly porous and can subsequently be coloured and decorated to striking effect, before being protected by a transparent glaze. In the case of Salvi s works, it is no longer used for its original intention of creating useful household objects or plastering the ceilings of prestigious palaces, rather its execution is one of intense creativity, in which the ancient medium, at the hands of this talented artist, takes the form of bizarre iconography rooted in pop culture and surrealism. Salvi s works, born of a profound artisan capability, coupled with a knowledge of pigments to rival even the most talented of alchemists, were never intended as decorative pieces with the purpose of complementing their surrounding environment, on the contrary, they need only be perceived as free sculptural creations - objects as social commentary, modelled on the frenetic nature of our modern times, dominated by continual error and surplus production of goods. The theme that underpins the exhibition entitled Waiting for an answer, is that of the short-lived contemporary journey, characterised primarily by a continual translocation of people and of objects, in which it seems that we must always abandon someone or something in order to invite and accommodate the surprise and pleasure of the unexpected. The departure from people whom we love and things which we consider precious becomes necessary in order to satisfy the impulse of our ever-expanding curiosity and desire for knowledge of faraway places. The converse effect of the lightening of this material load is that the weight of the unknown is at times augmented. On the surface of his suitcases appear miniscule pictorial signs and representations points and lines intersecting the relationship between reality and fantasy. By way of the pieces three dimensionality, and coupled with the inherent weight of the material itself, the maiolica represents the metamorphosis and distortion of reality, re-creating the significance of the object and its function, converting it to pages of a diary upon which the artist expresses memories, visions, dreams and colours of faraway places both imagined and real. With a mind to surveillance of the temporary nature of the exhibition, the artist has created a complementary installation made up of multitudinous coloured eyes which are displayed together in the allusion of a giant everwandering and speculating being. To seal their curiosity, Salvi covers the eyes with a glaze as transparent as glass, whilst in the folds of the lashes he colours them with the lustre of metallic varnish and in so doing lends them an alluring luminosity. Fragments of organic forms and irregular shapes meld together to form the landscape of the mind s eye, in which hanging houses, gargantuan hearts and errant aeroplanes cross paths on their journey across the artist s memory. In his constant pursuit to capture the plasticity of shapes, clouds are inflated, skies and the facades of houses are dissected, shadows of aeroplanes are imprisoned and hearts manifest in disproportion to their surrounds. The significance of this intersection of objects and the widely varying expression of their forms is that although Salvi has modelled and created each piece as a disparate entity, they combine as a singular representation of the confused nature of travel and memory. Through his game of composition and re-composition, the artist succeeds in giving life to the shapes plasticity, while the medium of maiolica is reduced to its base form of adding lucidity and colour to Salvi s higher goal of surreal visual representation. The works of Salvi at once bring to mind the pared-down style of Cubism, the volume and rotundity of cartoon illustration and the Pop movement s snappy disregard for convention. His pieces take us to an infantile and imaginary fairytale world in which fantasy, reality and enigma are confused as one. They are the result of the continual error of the artist who, happily always en voyage, lives a life of fleeting relationships and artistic contaminations. Fausto Salvi in this way expresses the nomadic nature of our times and his trust in contemporary cultural and artistic dynamism, in which everything forms an interrelated web and no one thing can ever stand truly alone. CERAMIC MUTATIONS Biotechnical advancements, the exponential evolution of knowledge in scientific fields, the mechanism of globalisation, futuristic projections that dominate the everyday almost from the precise moment of their conceptualisation; these are the very things that nurture the deeply rooted conviction of the magnificent progressive capability of humanity, while at the same time inciting an atavistic concern and ill-concealed resistance (more ethical than scientific) to human interference with nature interferences which, as in the fable of the sorcerer s apprentice, run the risk of spiralling out of control, creating irreversible damage of epic proportions. They are issues which have attracted profuse comment in recent times, giving rise to much heated debate surrounding the unrest of the collective conscience and which manifest in the way in which we view and interpret the significance of our modern reality. Fausto Salvi, an artist of broad conceptual and material sensitivity, translates these ideas into concrete terms by way of his experimentation with traditional forms of ceramic art, employing these forms in such a way as to give his pieces a voice that, while having its origins in the realms of antiquity, is inherently related to contemporary society. Salvi s artistic journey has been a long and intense one encompassing both the congnitive and expressive aspects of his nature, and from which there has never been a complete departure from the giddying metabolism of the modern world. By turns grotesque and monstrous, his works bear testament to the seemingly inescapable genetic and philosophical transformation of the human race; sculptures of ropes, Gordian Knots, romantically beating hearts, meticulous sculptural descriptions of weapons, projectiles and missiles; his works form an almost linear catalogue of the monstrosity and absurdity of war. In this way, Salvi provides a rigorous testimony of artistic expression and its ability to serve as a tool by which to critique the word in which we live, while at the same time remaining faithful to higher aesthetic ideals. His works are a vehicle by which to convey a precise set of ethical choices and ironies, a particular sense of tragedy and of the grotesque, shrouded in Pop formations and closely tied to the unique and quintessential language of comic illustrations. Orienting his works on these experiences, Salvi affronts the themes of genetic mutations, human intervention upon biological structures, upon the union of life and technology elaborating forms from a parallel other world, while at the same time speculating about our own: a world at once both futuristic and archaic in which there is no distinction between nature both animal and vegetable, between humanity and cruelty. In contrast to the apparent orderly domesticity of everyday life which at first glance suggest that his works are but vases placed discreetly upon a mantle, Salvi adds an element of luxuriant vegetation impossibly florid and covered with lifelike berries and pods, some coloured in exaggerated fashion, others as sharp as arrows. The technological nature of the metaphoric phenomenon is then discreetly revealed by a tiny led light, and (as in the blink of an eye) illuminates the secret of the forms which writhe and knot in search of their own space and their own existential sense. The monstrosity of these forms, which is in substance their individuality as regards the acquiescent knowledge of experience, is extraordinarily fascinating insofar as the artist puts them together with a wise and all-consuming rhythm, with a formal and elegant (if apparently spontaneous) equilibrium, in a refined pursuit of the realisation of surfaces: from marble white craquelure finish to luminous gold and copper, from bright and disarming ochres to unsettling eyes painted on the surface of mushroom-like protrusions. Fausto Salvi evokes for us a world free of human interference, placing the attention instead upon the biological world, which even in the simplicity of its shapes and in the elementary nature of its processes, denounces the monstrous possibilities of indifferent technological intervention (with respect to biodiversity itself and with respect to a profound ethical sense) while at the same time revealing the unstoppable force of life which finds, above and beyond all else, its own road in the elements untouched by the follies of contemporary humanity. In 2005, which now seems to me to be a century ago, I decided to take part in the Carouge ceramic competition. The biannual competition proposes a different theme each time, that of 2005 being the super exciting (!) theme: vase for a single flower. I turned myself thus to the search for a solution to the extremely serious task of containing the solitary bloom, which could also satisfy a certain sculptural necessity. With these thoughts in mind, I formulated a group of single pieces made in sections to be assembled by hand. To me the theme of the competition was not in the slightest bit interesting but, as is often the case, in an attempt to look below the surface of the words and their significance, we can often find ideas that are curious and interesting in their own right. 27

Sradicarsi a volte è importante! Gmunden 2004 = Water = CONNECTION Concentrating on the political aspect tied to this natural resource, I thought about the preciousness that water is acquiring, aside from its simple status as an element indispensible to our survival. Water is becoming an increasingly commodified resource which is being hoarded, privatised and managed more and more by large multinational corporations, leading undoubtedly to future shortages and accordingly to ever increasing demand. In industrialised countries such as our own, this is not perceived as a great problem but in the meantime the mechanism of privatisation takes the form of an elephant in the room, the presence and existence of which may be felt but is systematically ignored and glossed over. An important aspect of the symposium was that the experience which it presented convinced me that it would be possible for me to work and produce, regardless of whether or not I had my own personal space, my own private studio. I came to understand how interesting (not to mention stimulating) it could be to work in a studio with other ceramicists, in schools or in any other provisional space that from that moment forth would become my temporary studio. From that experience onward I have worked in many different places and even still, despite the fact that I have now set up my own permanent studio in Italy, I carry on the idea of working itinerantly between Brescia, Milan, London and New York, as well as other cities depending upon the presentation of opportunities. Recently I led a workshop at the NID National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad in India. I ve come to realise that to uproot oneself is sometimes important!

I begin with a little piece of metal. Then I add other squares and rectangles, I place them one on top of the next until I obtain an effect similar to that of gold leaf. But the material is less expensive, less noble, closer to the reality of that which I aim to represent. Around a year ago I decided to give credence to a sort of denial of the glassy ceramic surface and the enamel glazed effect. Perhaps it is a denial of the material which in itself constitutes an obstacle for the comprehension fo its expressive potential. And so I return to myself, to my work and to that which in essence I like to do: to play with and to look for different forms of expression. I cover everything, or at least as much as possible, with this marvellous papery adhesive aluminium foil, giving a visibly stronger skin to the fired and glazed pieces, rendering an effect less warm than that of the well loved majolica. The work proceeds, and as it develops, a forest and its respective understory take form. Alien heads, bicycles (I am covering my new bike, thought this is not an artistic operation per se) groups of panels which could easily meet the expectations of shiny new public spaces. Details remain that emerge from the shiny surface of the aluminium, oval and concentric bicoloured patterns that break and interrupt to remind the viewer that under the skin lies the structure and the fired soul of the piece. 33
