4 PREFACE The story of Henry Jekyll and his sinister alter ego Mr. Hyde has captivated readers imaginations for the last 125 years. Robert Louis Stevenson s story has been viewed as a mirror image of the Victorian era, connected with psychoanalysis and continues as a timeless story. The fateful events have been interpreted on film countless times, portrayed on stage, retold, rewritten even made into a musical. We have tried to pack the classic characters and plot into an exciting computer game requiring both skill and thought. We wanted to preserve the key elements of the story, but it has been our aim to provide you with new experiences by adding interesting characters and a slightly different background story. Pixelcage and bitcomposer hope that you have fun on your journey through London s underworld. 2

6 INSTALLATION Please close all running applications before starting the installation procedure. 1. Place the Jekyll & Hyde DVD into the DVD drive of your computer. 2. Should the installation process fail to start automatically, please use the Setup.exe application on the DVD. 3. Follow the onscreen instructions and wait for all the necessary files to be copied onto your PC. Note: DirectX 9.0c software must be installed on your PC in order for the game to function properly. If it is not already on your computer, it will be installed automatically as part of the Jekyll & Hyde installation process. Uninstalling: Select Uninstall from the Start/Programs/bitComposer/Jekyll&Hyde menu, or remove the program using the Control Panel Add or Remove Programs option. You can keep your personal game settings and save games on your computer if you answer Yes when the relevant requester appears. STARTING A GAME To start playing the game click on the desktop shortcut, or launch the program via the Windows Start menu. 7 THE GAME Story EXTRACT FROM COLTRANE S MEMOIRS I have always endeavoured to be in the background. It does not behove a servant to question his master s actions. He must support him in his efforts and even if one thing or another might appear perverse, a servant should always get on with his duties quietly and reliably. All my actions have been governed by this guiding principle. And yet perhaps I should have intervened. Lord Grayshire might possibly still be alive if I had attempted to bring him back to his senses. I believe he trusted me, and I may have managed to put a stop to the madness. He continued, however, and I was constantly at his side quiet and reliable, as always. Even when he penetrated deep into the secret societies bowels and his dreadful fate was sealed. No, it is not my style to pass comment. Not even when I saw Lord Grayshire conjure up things which have been haunting my nightmares ever since. Things from other spheres, issuing forth from beyond the stars, thirsting to subjugate all other life When Lord Grayshire disappeared, I hoped that this would put an end to the horror, and for a while, it did. Dr. Jekyll bought the establishment and our trust in each other grew quickly. It did not escape my notice that he felt very drawn to Miss Cunningham and she soon reciprocated his attentions. All seemed to be well. However, Dr. Jekyll was incredibly ambitious. When a peculiar disease began to spread in London, he became totally focused on conquering it. Of course, I energetically supported him in every way possible, but I did not foresee that a small mishap would lead him to discover the secrets surrounding Lord Grayshire. This was the beginning of a melee of events, which would not only lead to Dr. Jekyll having to become familiar with his darker side, but that would ultimately determine the destiny of our world 5

8 6 CHARACTERS Dr. Henry Jekyll Being a doctor is not only his profession it is his calling. Dr. Jekyll helps selflessly, whenever he can. He has no qualms about entering London s slums in order to treat the needy, expecting no recompense for his troubles. His peers viewed this most disapprovingly. Over the years his DIY tinkering has not only extended and improved his doctor s case, but has actually converted it into a miniature laboratory. Jekyll is a man who does not view problems with despair, but regards them as a challenge. His motivation is curiosity he is always striving to gain more knowledge and experience new things. If a problem attracts Jekyll s interest, he immerses himself in it for as long as it takes to resolve. If an emergency requires swift action, Jekyll will perform each and every step quickly and effectively. Things that have no logical explanation are one of his greatest passions. When he discovers something lurking under London that defies reason, it ignites an indescribable urge in him to explore. Mr. Hyde There is a dark side lurking in every one of us, of which for the most part we remain unaware. The dark side of Dr. Jekyll manifests itself as Mr. Hyde during the search for a cure. Whereas Jekyll is calm and patient, Hyde has no self-control. The eloquence of the doctor is alien to Hyde. Curiosity is unknown to him instead he is driven by anger and hate. Even the doctor s body changes and in the form of Hyde he is endowed with huge strength. He can hit harder, jump higher and run faster than Jekyll. To begin with, Mr Hyde can only be summoned via the potion, that Jekyll has developed as a cure for the infection and trialled on himself. However, over time Hyde becomes ever stronger... Coltrane His father already oversaw the running of a manor house and was servant to London s upper classes. Coltrane has followed his father s example and faithfully served Lord Grayshire for many years. When Lord Grayshire disappeared, he feared that he would need to turn his hand to other things. Luckily, the estate whose care he was so familiar with was soon sold to a

9 new owner, Dr. Jekyll. He welcomed the presence of someone who was already so experienced, and Coltrane was relieved to be able to remain in the same house that he had spent most of his life in. Coltrane is quiet, as would be expected of a servant. He is introverted and dedicates himself to his work, rather than exploring London or the world. Ann Cunningham As daughter of an Indian princess, she has always hated playing the role of daughter from a good family. Her whole life she has obeyed her strict, and since the death of her mother, frequently sad father. She dresses elegantly, is friendly, and behaves in exactly the manner that is expected of her by London s high society. Yet underneath this exterior, she is seething. The small talk required of her at receptions given by the nobility, whilst infection spreads amongst the poor is taking ever more lives, makes her want to scream. Whenever possible she slips away and helps in an orphanage. Every attempt her father has made to forbid this has failed. In the end, he has just requested that she does not mention any of this to possible suitors. It goes without saying that Lord Cunningham would prefer a son-in-law of the noblest birth. Ann however, does not ascribe any great importance to this. Rufus de Lombard The Lombards influence in the circles of London s nobility is greater than it would first appear. They have a reputation of being mavericks, regarding themselves a cut above the rest, even when moving in the highest of circles. Instead of countering this gossip, Rufus and his father positively foster it by their eccentric behaviour. The Lombards however, know something that the others do not: they hold the key to a power in their hands that surpasses anything the world has ever seen... 7

10 MAIN MENU The Main Menu will appear after you have started playing. This allows you to begin a new game, continue playing a saved game, adjust various settings, and view the Extras, which have been made available to be played. Continue Selecting this menu option will load the last save game. You will then continue playing from exactly the point where you last saved. If you have not yet started playing a game, this option is deactivated. New Game This option will start a completely new game right from the beginning. Be careful! If you already have saved games, these will be overwritten during the course of playing the new game! Chapter If you wish to replay a particular chapter of the story, then this option enables you to do that. The automatic save function and the restore points will be covered in detail later. Be careful! If you re-enter the game via the Chapter Menu, existing save games will be overwritten with new save games. 8

11 SETTINGS Graphics You can adjust the following graphic settings here: - Screen resolution - Level of Anti-aliasing - Texture quality - Shadow definition - Display effects on/off You will achieve the best graphic display quality if you select a resolution that is compatible with your monitor. If the graphics are too slow (image judders), you can reduce the graphic quality here. Changes to the resolution, anti-aliasing, as well as texture quality will only take effect if you restart the game. Sound - Volume This is where you can adjust the volume of the various audio elements. - Speech and Subtitles You can play the game in various different languages. This is where you can adjust the settings for the speech and subtitles. Game Options You can interact with certain objects and areas in the game s environment. These are called Hotspots. These can be set to display via key press (default setting), to always be displayed or you can deactivate this function completely. You can also activate or deactivate the instructions about how to play the game here (the so-called Tutorials). Lastly, the mouse controls can be adjusted here (see Controls below). 9

12 Credits Look at who has developed this game. Exit Quits the game and returns you to the desktop. PAUSE MENU Pressing the ESC key will stop the game and take you to the Pause menu. There you will find the following options: Play on Closes the Pause menu so you can continue playing the game. Chapter This allows you to go directly to any particular chapter. Please note that doing this will result in any current game progress, i.e. since the last save, being lost! Settings This is where you can adjust the game settings, as described in the Main Menu above. Main Menu Selecting this option will take you back to the Main Menu. Quit You will exit the game and return to the desktop. 10

13 GAME SCREEN Inventory, Life Gauge, Quickslots Icons Mouse cursor Display Menu Mouse cursor Use the mouse cursor to choose which direction your character should move in. His appearance will indicate how fast he will move. You can also use the mouse to manage objects in your Inventory, select Menu options, and activate Quickslots. If mouse control is deactivated, you can get your game character to crouch and crawl. Icons Icons indicate what sorts of interactions are available to you. Click on the magnifying glass to examine an object. If you want to use an object, click on the hand icon. 11

14 SCREEN ICONS Life Gauge The life gauge displays how much life energy remains. Quickslots Particular objects can be used directly via the Quickslots. Skills acquired during the latter part of the game can also be accessed by means of the Quickslots. Quickslots Inventory button (Jekyll) Life Gauge Inventory The Inventory contains all objects that you have collected during the course of the game. You will not be able to access the Inventory when you are playing as Hyde. 16 THE PORTABLE LABORATORY The portable laboratory allows Dr. Jekyll to conduct experiments with the substances he collects during the course of the game. The resultant mixtures can help him to overcome various obstacles in the game. Decrease Ingredient Quantity Increase Ingredient Quantity Ingredient Quantity Indicator Recipe Button Start Reaction Close Portable Laboratory This game mode is about discovering the correct mix ratios. You need to work out how much of each individual ingredient is needed to create a new substance. If a reaction is initiated, then you will be able to see whether you have the relative proportions correct, or if the ingredient quantities need to be adjusted. Using too much of one particular ingredient will cause the substance to overreact. No reaction or a weak reaction indicates that too little of a particular ingredient has been used. 14

17 Recipe Hints about the mix ratios of the ingredients to be used. Reaction Activates the portable laboratory with the current mix ratio settings. Ingredient Quantity Display You will be able to see from the level in the test-tube, how large a quantity of any individual ingredient has been used. Add Ingredient Increases the quantity of that particular ingredient. Decrease Ingredient Decreases the amount of that particular ingredient. CONTROLS Mouse Left button - Use to select icons and buttons. If mouse control is activated (see Game Options in Controls menu ): - Hold down while moving the cursor across the screen to move the character in the direction of the mouse cursor. The distance between the cursor and the character will determine whether you run or walk. If mouse control is deactivated: - Crouch and crawl (see Control Modes ). Right button - Jump, climb, or cancel commentaries, dialogues, scenes, or videos. 15

20 CONTROL MODES Climbing The player can climb over obstacles or up steep walls in some places. Whilst Dr. Jekyll can only scale hip-high obstacles, Hyde is able to perform considerably greater climbing feats. Jumping Both game characters can jump over obstacles, however Hyde s strength does give him the advantage. He can jump considerably further and can even grab hold of ledges that are particularly far away when jumping. Hyde s jumps from a run cover a greater distance than walking jumps. Jekyll can only jump from a run and even then, he will not cover a long distance. You need to jump from a standstill in order to jump vertically. Crouching and Crawling Crouch if, for instance, you want to avoid a trap. If you move whilst crouching your game character will crawl forwards until you release the crouch button. Push Some objects in the game can be moved. This is indicated via an icon. Quicktime Event There are various passages and obstacles that you will encounter during the game that will test your reaction speed and concentration. There are two different types of Quicktime event. In the first one a button appears, which you just need to press before it disappears again. For the second kind you will need to press the button that is blended in repeatedly in short succession. THE AUTOMATIC SAVE FUNCTION Game segments are saved automatically. You can then skip to any chapter segment that you have already reached, via the Main Menu. 18

21 RESTORE POINTS In contrast to chapter save points, restore points are not saved when you leave the game. Should you however die during the course of the adventure, you will be returned to the last restore point that you reached. FAQ AND SOLVING PROBLEMS The error message Device create failed or similar appears when starting the game. Please install an updated graphics driver for your graphics card. You should also check that there is no other application running that might have need of the graphics card! The game is working, but there is no sound or music! Check via Windows or another application that your sound card is working properly. You may try installing an updated driver. Are all the appropriate volume controls enabled? Why is the game juddering? Please check the graphic settings in the Graphics menu. The following solutions can have a beneficial effect on the game s display speed depending on the hardware being used (graphics card, graphic memory, or processor): - Select a lower resolution - Decrease or deactivate anti-aliasing - Decrease shadow quality - Decrease texture quality: - For 128 MB Graphics memory: low - For 256 MB Graphics memory: medium - From 512 MB Graphics memory: high - Decrease Special effects - Deactivate Display effects 19

22 Can I change the game s languages/sub-titles after installation? Yes, you can. Just select the language you wish to use from the Settings / Sound/ Speech or Subtitle menu. The speech (videos, commentaries etc) as well as the subtitles will then be changed to the language selected. You will need to restart the game in order for the menu changes to take effect. The subtitle settings are of course independent of the selected speech settings and can be completely deactivated. HINTS Particular abilities are needed in order to survive this adventure. If you get stuck then you may find the following points helpful: - Use the Hotspots feature! Press on either the H or the TAB key, or BACK on your Xbox controller, in order to have points of interest displayed. - Examine any objects found in the inventory. You may discover new tips here or even new objects! - Examine your surroundings wherever you see a magnifying glass appear! - Read Lord Grayshire s notes! Some hidden artefacts can only be found when Dr. Jekyll knows about them. - Check whether you can combine any objects that you have collected, or whether you can use them in the game world. - Use Mr. Hyde in the difficult sections, as well as making use of his new capabilities in the latter parts of the game! 20

Ces événements fatidiques ont été interprétés et réécrits un bon nombre de fois. Il y a eu des films, des pièces de théâtre, et même une comédie musicale. Nous avons immergé les personnages classiques de l histoire dans un jeu vidéo palpitant exigeant à la fois réflexe et agilité. 27 JOUER Intrigue EXTRAIT DES MÉMOIRES DE COLTRANE «Je me suis toujours efforcé à rester dans l ombre. Il n est pas du devoir de majordome de remettre en cause les actions de son maître. Il doit le supporter, et ce, même si ses actions peuvent paraître perverses. Un majordome se doit de toujours répondre à l appel et d exécuter les tâches qui lui incombent. Toutes mes actions ont été gouvernées par ces principes. Ce qui n empêche pas que j aurais dû intervenir. Le lord Grayshire serait sans doute toujours en vie si j avais essayé de le ramener à la raison. Je pense qu il me faisait assez confiance et que j aurais pu le sortir de sa folie. Cependant, je suis resté à ses côtés, sans rien dire et aussi servile que jamais, pendant que lui continuait à s enfoncer. Lorsqu il pénétra dans les entrailles d une société secrète, son sort fut définitivement scellé. Ce n est pas mon style de faire des commentaires. Pas même lorsque j ai vu le lord Grayshire conjurer des choses qui hantent encore aujourd hui mes pires cauchemars. Ce sont des choses venues d ailleurs, venues d au-delà les étoiles, venues pour dominer toute forme de vie... Lorsque le lord Grayshire disparu, j espérai que toute cette horreur s enfouirait avec lui, ce qui fut le cas, pendant un moment. Le docteur Jekyll racheta la propriété et une relation de confiance se battit entre nous. Il ne m échappa pas qu il était très attiré par miss Cunningham, et ce n était pas à sens unique. Tout se passait bien. Cependant, le docteur Jekyll était très ambitieux. Lorsqu une épidémie se répandit dans Londres, il se concentra à maîtriser celle-ci. Je lui apportai évidemment tout mon soutien, mais je n aurais jamais imaginé qu une petite mésaventure l amènerait à découvrir les secrets entourant le lord Grayshire. C était le début d une série d événements qui amena non seulement le docteur Jekyll a rencontré le côté sombre qui se renfermait en lui, mais également à mettre le destin du monde à l épreuve...» 25

28 PERSONNAGES Dr Henry Jekyll Être docteur n est pas seulement une profession, mais surtout une vocation. Le docteur Jekyll est le symbole de la cause des plus défavorisés. Il est toujours prêt à aider son prochain, sans jamais ne rien demander en retour. Il n a aucune appréhension à se rendre dans les quartiers pauvres de Londres pour y aider les plus démunis, malgré les nombreuses critiques formulées par ses pairs. Au fil des années, ses astucieuses améliorations ont transformé sa valise classique de docteur en véritable laboratoire miniature. Le docteur Jekyll est un homme de défi, qui ne se laisse jamais abattre par la difficulté d un problème. La curiosité est sa plus grande motivation, sa nature le pousse constamment à s enrichir de connaissances nouvelles et à connaître des expériences insolites. Lorsqu un problème attise l intérêt de Jekyll, il s y plonge totalement jusqu à en trouver la solution. Mais si un cas d urgence nécessite des mesures immédiates, Jekyll est aussi capable d exécuter rapidement et efficacement chaque étape pour résoudre le problème. Jekyll est passionné par les énigmes qui n ont aucune explication logique. Et lorsque celui-ci a découvert que quelque chose d irrationnel se passait dans les sousterrains de Londres, un désir indescriptible l a poussé à en savoir plus. M. Hyde Chacun de nous renferme un côté sombre dont la plupart même ignorent l existence. M. Hyde incarne ce côté sombre du docteur Jekyll qui surgit lors de sa recherche pour un remède. À l opposé de Jekyll qui est calme et patient, Hyde n a aucune maîtrise de soi. L éloquence du docteur est étrangère à Hyde. Il ne ressent aucune curiosité et n est motivé que par les sentiments de colère et de haine. Lorsque le corps du docteur se métamorphose en Hyde, ceci lui octroie une force extraordinaire. Il peut frapper plus fort, sauter plus loin et courir plus vite que Jeyll. Au début, M. Hyde peut seulement être invoqué par le biais de la mixture concoctée par le docteur Jekyll pour venir à bout de l épidémie et qu il avait expérimenté sur lui-même. Cependant, avec le temps, Hyde devient plus fort... 26

29 Coltrane Son père était également majordome dans un manoir de la haute société londonienne. Coltrane suivit l exemple de son père et se mit au service du lord Grayshire qu il servit pendant de nombreuses années. Lorsque le lord Grayshire disparu, il eut peur de devoir emboîter une autre carrière. Heureusement, la propriété qu il connaissait de fond en comble fut vite vendue au respectable docteur Jekyll. Celui-ci accueillait avec joie ce majordome expérimenté et Coltrane fut soulagé de pouvoir rester dans la maison dans laquelle il avait passé la plus grande partie de sa vie. Coltrane est calme et a tout ce qu on attend d un majordome. Il est introverti et se dévoue à son travail, plutôt que d explorer Londres ou le reste du monde. Anne Cunningham Elle est la fille d une princesse indienne, mais elle a toujours détesté jouer le rôle de «fille de bonne famille». Elle a reçu une éducation stricte de son père qui avait été affecté par la mort de sa femme. Sympathique, elle s habille élégamment et se comporte conformément aux règles de la haute société londonienne. Pourtant, sous cette apparence, elle bouillonne de colère. Pendant que l épidémie se propage dans les quartiers pauvres et emporte chaque jour de plus en plus de vies avec elle, les discours dont elle doit s affranchir lors de réceptions organisées par la noblesse la rendent furieuse. Lorsque l occasion se présente à elle, elle se faufile dans un orphelinat pour y apporter son aide, et ce, malgré l interdiction de son père. Ce dernier s est résigné à la laisser aller sous condition qu elle n en parle pas à ses potentiels gendres. Il va de soi que le lord Cunningham espère un gendre issu de la noblesse, mais Anne n y attache pas grande importance. Rufus de Lombard Les Lombard disposent d une puissante influence au sein de la noblesse londonienne. 30 MENU PRINCIPAL Après avoir démarré le jeu, vous accéderez au menu principal. Depuis celui-ci, vous pourrez commencer une nouvelle partie, continuer une partie sauvegardée, configurer divers paramètres, regarder les bonus ayant été déverrouillés lors de votre progression dans le jeu. Continuer Reprendre la partie depuis la dernière sauvegarde. Cette option est désactivée si vous n avez jamais joué auparavant. Nouvelle partie Commencer une partie depuis le début. Attention : si vous avez déjà des sauvegardes, celles-ci seront écrasées Chapitre Rejouer un chapitre en particulier de l histoire. La fonction de sauvegarde automatique, ainsi que les points de rétablissement seront expliqués plus loin dans le manuel. Attention : si vous rejouez en passant par le menu Chapitre, les sauvegardes existantes seront écrasées. 28

31 PARAMÈTRES Graphiques Vous pouvez configurer les paramètres graphiques suivants : - Résolution - Anti-aliasing - Qualité des textures - Qualité des ombres - Effets graphiques Vous obtiendrez une meilleure qualité d image en sélectionnant une résolution compatible avec votre écran. Si vous notez des ralentissements d affichage (image saccadée), réduisez la qualité des graphiques. Les modifications de la résolution, de la qualité des textures et de l antialiasing ne seront prises en compte qu une fois avoir redémarré le jeu. Son - Volume Vous pouvez régler le volume des différents éléments sonores. - Voix et sous-titres Vous pouvez jouer dans différentes langues en configurant les paramètres de voix et sous-titres. Options de jeu Vous pouvez interagir avec certains objets et zones du jeu. Pour les afficher clairement à l écran (réglages par défaut), activez les infoaides. Vous pouvez également les désactiver.
