1 Museology of Design, research group University Iuav of Venezia The research group on the Museology of Design, was formed in It aims at studying themes related to museology and museography of design: from concerns regarding preservation and promotion of design heritage to the use of advanced technologies for the management of historical archives as well as for presenting, exhibiting and communicating material and intangible culture, with a special interest in the organization and visualization of informations both in institutions such as museums and archives and in urban and regional environments. Based on a multidisciplinary approach, the Museology of Design research group involves teachers, researchers, PhD students and postdocs also thanks to the close link with the PhD in Design Sciences and the collaboration with other research groups. The group carries out: projects that are started and developed within the University Iuav, and that relate to educational activities (lectures, workshops, theses and dissertations, papers); project-based research, that is developed in parthership with external institutions such as museums, companies, other universities. 2 Research strands The research group of Museology of Design develops several research themes, ranging from theoretical and historical inquiries to practice-based projects. Currently the group carries out research in the following subjects: Design history, theoretical models and museum models This strand focuses on design history, business history and museum studies. The objectives are: to build theoretical foundations for a museology of design, to investigate the social and cultural role of institutions devoted to the display and communication of design, and to disseminate knowledge and tools that can help developing the critical study and understanding of design history. Design and company archives and memory This strand deals with the preservation, interpretation and promotion of industrial heritage, design heritage and material culture, with a special focus on Northeast Italy. The aim is to help building a network of company museums and archives. Museography, exhibit and multimedia design This strand deals with exhibit and multimedia design, with a particular focus on the experimentation and application of innovative technologies and on information design in the museum context (accessibility, interaction etc.). It also develops historical and theoretical research and practice-based research on the specific issues of exhibit design in science museums and centres. Design, culture, services and information This strand reflects on design in relation to the notion of public, and precisely on the role of design in the development of communication and guidance systems that can help to manage and enjoy the cultural heritage outside museums. Special attention is on users (interface, usability, etc.). 4 Theses See the list online /tesi Teaching activities The Faculty of Arts and Design of the University Iuav of Venice offers courses related to museology, museography, art history and design history, including: Science and technology history, led by Raimonda Riccini; Display and design museography, led by Mario Lupano; Fashion and museology, led by Judith Clark; Museography led by Giulio Alessandri. The Faculty also offers workshop activities. Workshops - New Basic Design Lab: directed by Giovanni Anceschi, has been active since Based on the experiences of the Bauhaus and Ulm School, this module aims at deepening the knowledge of basic design through workshops, seminars and exhibitions in order to outline new directions. - Exhibit, workshop and seminars: launched in Winter 2011 within the Master Degree in Industrial Design, in conjunction with the PhD in Design Sciences, this program include workshops and seminars that focus on museum exhibits and multimedia technologies. In 2011, Helen Charman (Design Museum, London) and Serhan Ada (Istanbul Bilgi University) were invited by the PhD in Design Sciences, while Mario Lupano has organized a series of lectures at the Master Degree course in Fashion Design (including, among others, Antonella Huber Judith Clark, Elda Danese).
