9 Methodology Pat.Iris data source : Questel Orbit plakorm informanon concerning the patent of the UniversiNes and the research centers coming from all over the world from 1947 up to now. Data cernfied: from In.Pa.Doc, from the E.P.O., the InternaNonal patent DocumentaNon Center. 60 million patent documents from more than 92 countries. 9

Text strings allow a relevant number of name variants of each assegnee Problem worsened by data entry mistakes, incorrect translapons, process of scanning paper documents using OCR, etc. Research based on assignee names very difficult 12

Building search strings that include all name varia)ons is the only way to correctly idennfy all potennally relevant documents. 13

Robustness Checks All the idennfied name variants and all the documents have been manually inspected by the researchers. Approach IdenNfy all the observable name varianons appearing in the documents.
