3 98 PROGETTI/PROJECTS domus 973 Ottobre / October 2013 Il termine abitare ha a che vedere con il concetto di quotidianità intesa come espressione del nostro agire quotidiano. Di per sé, è già un modo specifico di interpretare la professione di architetto. Il sistema mediatico ha spinto i progettisti a diventare artisti che costruiscono grandi icone, segni importanti che devono essere riconoscibili. Se non ti presti al gioco dei grandi gesti, non sei un grande architetto. Poi, però, devi stare molto attento a non diventare noioso, a non ripetere te stesso usando gli stessi argomenti. È importante sottolineare che la nostra architettura contiene invece la scienza dell abitare e non ha a che fare con i gesti eclatanti. A noi interessa il mondo fatto di elementi messi in relazione tra loro: distanze pedonali, paesaggio, materiali, riferimenti. Per fortuna, anche in un settore difficile come quello immobiliare c è qualcuno che ha iniziato a capire il nostro modo di lavorare, mentre in passato, purtroppo, i grandi investitori ragionavano solo per asset immobiliari ai quali davano un valore economico in quanto riconoscibili come oggetti architettonici. Le nuove generazioni che si occupano di sviluppo urbano hanno cominciato a comprendere che non si deve lavorare sulla riconoscibilità del singolo edificio, ma sulla città. Creare città significa pensare all abitare. Se le persone stanno sedute in una stanza, vuol dire che lì c è uno spazio, un luogo: questo ha a che vedere con il nostro lavoro di architetti. Negli ultimi 20 anni, l architettura ha guardato alla progettazione degli interni come fosse un arte minore, non capendo che la sola differenza tra le due discipline era che agivano su una scala diversa. All estero, il nostro studio è apprezzato proprio per questa capacità di abitare gli spazi, che è anche la ragione per cui, molto spesso, ci chiedono di vedere e fotografare i luoghi dove viviamo Patricia e io. Ci troviamo in un momento straordinario, con grandissime opportunità per la tradizione europea del progetto. Sappiamo che, da qui al 2040, la popolazione mondiale crescerà di due miliardi di persone, che corrisponde alla nascita di una nuova città ogni settimana. Basandoci su questi numeri, gli architetti hanno un grande lavoro che li aspetta nell immmediato futuro. Attualmente, all estero si sta lavorando soprattutto sullo sviluppo in altezza degli edifici, e sempre nell ottica di produrre un grande segno che caratterizzi l investimento immobiliare in modo deciso, ma qualcosa sta cambiando. Sta nascendo un mercato, che sta diventando importante anche come giro d affari, attento alla qualità degli interni e all abitare. Al momento il nostro studio sta preparando progetti residenziali, a Singapore o a Taichung (Taiwan), partendo proprio dal disegno degli interni. Costruiamo modelli in scala reale degli ambienti, così che i clienti possano verificare come funzionano e come verranno abitati. Questo passaggio avviene prima ancora di dare avvio alla costruzione dell edificio. Nel nostro caso, questa modalità di lavorare si è sviluppata in modo molto naturale prima con il progetto di alberghi e poi, nel corso del tempo, con quello di edifici residenziali. I grattacieli, di fatto, hanno in comune molte parti strutturali con gli alberghi: ingressi, terrazzi, balconi. In un grattacielo di 200 appartamenti ci vive una comunità, più o meno come succede in un albergo. È qui che l efficienza e la qualità dell abitare diventano un argomento importante. Quando noi presentiamo il progetto per un nuovo albergo, lo facciamo come se raccontassimo la sinossi di un film, nel quale il cliente è il protagonista. Cerchiamo di lavorare sulla dimensione eroica dell esistenza. Creiamo una sceneggiatura che descriva i diversi gesti quotidiani quando si arriva a casa, si cena, si va a dormire, e così via, per narrare il modo in cui intendiamo l abitare. La relazione dell architettura con il paesaggio è altrettanto importante. In fase di progettazione, ci preoccupiamo di cosa si vede quando ci si trova nell edificio, come esso si relaziona con il contesto e come è orientato verso il sole. Sembrerà incredibile, ma viene molto apprezzato quando, nel racconto del progetto, ci soffermiamo sull importanza di avere una vista sul tramonto, di orientare le stanze e la cucina verso est per ricevere la luce del mattino e per assicurarsi un illuminazione gradevole quando si fa colazione. Questi sono incredibili fattori di successo, difficili da trasformare in prassi teorica: si tratta più che altro di un alchimia misteriosa. Quello dell abitare è un tema complesso. Non si tratta semplicemente di interpretare uno stile, ma di individuare un modello di riferimento. Per farlo, bisogna porre molte domande alla committenza. Noi crediamo che vada rispettata la cultura locale, mentre oggi spesso ci si ritrova a discutere con clienti orientali che vogliono adottare un modello occidentale senza capirne a fondo il motivo. Anni fa, quando abbiamo cominciato a lavorare in Cina, c erano modelli abitativi assimilabili alle residenze newyorkesi degli anni Trenta, proposti sul mercato immobiliare senza capire che il contesto in cui li si impiantava era ben diverso da quello americano. Ora il mercato, anche in Cina, è diventato più consapevole. Ricordo quando, negli anni Ottanta, visitai con Tadao Ando la casa Azuma, che aveva le zone notte e giorno separate da una corte aperta. In questo caso, Ando con il suo progetto portava avanti, giustamente, una visione scintoista: voleva salvaguardare a tutti i costi la cultura del suo Paese perché sentiva incombere quella occidentale, voleva conservare le sue radici. Il nostro lavoro si propone di avvicinare più persone possibile all oggetto di design, come avviene in Paesi scandinavi quali Danimarca, Finlandia, Norvegia e Svezia, dove il design fa parte della cultura di tutti e lo si acquista nei supermercati: non è inteso come mezzo per esprimere uno status. In queste nazioni la cultura dell abitare è diffusa ed è legata all amore per il proprio territorio. C è anche un grande rispetto nei confronti della natura e del paesaggio, che invece manca in Italia. La cultura dell abitare dovrebbe vivere dentro le nostre case, ma anche fuori di esse. Diffonderla è compito di noi progettisti. Il mestiere del designer è in continua evoluzione e non è più legato alla figura dell artigiano che produce pezzi unici: la tecnologia ha oggi un ruolo fondamentale perché ci permette di realizzare prodotti straordinari e unici a un prezzo competitivo. Oltre a saper disegnare un oggetto gradevole, il progettista deve conoscere il ciclo produttivo grazie al quale esso viene realizzato e deve puntare su funzionalità e prezzo corretto: queste sono le condizioni indispensabili alla sopravvivenza stessa del mestiere In questa pagina: la scrivania di Antonio Citterio, nel suo studio milanese in una tranquilla via nel centro di Milano (in apertura, la facciata d ingresso). Il fatto a mano oggi è un lusso che il progetto industriale non si può più permettere: la manualità è un modello che si è allontanato totalmente dal sistema economico. Pensare a una nuova forma di artigianato significa rimanere ancorati a una visione romantica che distrugge l approccio professionale al design. Non è un esperienza di per sé sbagliata pensare di recuperare un certo know-how del passato o utilizzare materiali riciclati ma non ha nulla a che fare con il modello della produzione industriale che porta a realizzare un prodotto alla portata di tutti. Il nostro studio non ha mai disegnato un oggetto inteso come a se stante, ma lo ha sempre considerato integrato nell ambiente. Una sedia non è mai pensata da sola, senza un tavolo. Disegnare una sedia significa rappresentare un mondo, dar forma all abitare. A metà degli anni Ottanta ho progettato un divano molto semplice, il Sity, che raccontava del desiderio di guardare comodamente la televisione. Ha avuto tanto successo da diventare uno standard. Tutti creavano divani per parlare, noi invece pensavamo a un divano per mangiare, guardare la televisione, dormire. Lo stesso ragionamento lo adottiamo oggi quando progettiamo cucine. Alcuni le disegnano pensando a tavoli da cliniche mediche, mentre noi prendiamo in considerazione i tavoli domestici, i piatti, la luce. Un architetto è tale solo se sa disegnare luoghi. The top floor is entirely occupied by Antonio Citterio s office (photos by Andrea Basile) Abitare, the Italian word for dwell, live, inhabit, is connected to everyday life, an expression of our daily activities. It is a very specific way of seeing the profession of the architect. The media system has pushed architects towards becoming artists who construct huge icons or high-profile symbols. If you do not play the great gesture game, you are not a great architect. You also have to be very careful not to become boring, not to repeat yourself by using the same ideas. We emphasise that our architecture contains the science of abitare; it has nothing to do with the gesture. We are interested in elements that are set in relationship to one another: pedestrian distance, landscape, materials and references. Fortunately, even in the problematic field of real estate, some people have started to appreciate the way we work. In the past, unfortunately, the big investors thought only in terms of real-estate assets with economic value, meaning highprofile architectural objects. New generations involved in urban development now understand that you have to work not on the profile of the individual building but on the city. Creating cities means thinking about how we live. If people are sitting in a room, it means that there is a space there - this is what our work as architects is about. In the last 20 years, architecture has seen the design of interior spaces as the lesser art, not understanding that the only difference between the two disciplines is scale. Outside Italy, our studio is appreciated for the capacity to create liveable spaces, which is also the reason why people often ask Patricia and I if they can see and photograph the places where we live. Our era contains huge opportunities for the European design tradition. We know that between now and 2040 the global population will grow by two billion, which is equivalent to building a new city every week. These numbers mean that architects have a huge job to do in the immediate future. Currently, architects outside Italy are working, above all, on developing buildings upwards, always with the aim of producing huge icons to raise the profile of the real-estate operations they are working for but things are changing. An increasingly moneyed market is developing in the quality of interiors and the home environment. At the moment our studio is working on residential designs in Singapore and Taichung, which take the design of the interior spaces as their starting point. We construct scale models of the spaces so that our clients can check how they work and how they will be inhabited. This stage takes place even before construction of the building begins. In our case, this way of working has developed very naturally, first with hotel design and then, over time, with the design of residential buildings. Skyscrapers, in fact, share many structural elements with hotels, for example entrances, terraces and balconies. A 200-apartment skyscraper houses a community, more or less like a hotel. It is here that the efficiency and quality of the home environment becomes a key idea. We present a design for a new hotel as if we were explaining the plot of a film, with the client in the leading role. We try to work with the heroic dimension of existence. We create a script describing different daily acts arriving home, eating dinner, going to bed, and so on to explain our understanding of the art of living. The relationship between architecture and the landscape is equally important. In the design phase, we worry about what you will see when you are inside the building, how that will relate to the context and how it is oriented in terms of the sun. It might seem incredible, but it is hugely appreciated when, as part of explaining a design, we highlight the importance of having a view of the sunset and giving bedrooms and kitchens eastern exposure so they catch the morning sun and provide nice light for breakfast. These are the amazing factors of our success. They are difficult to convert into a theoretical approach - it s a mysterious kind of alchemy more than anything else. The idea of a mode of living is a complex one. It is not a matter of simply interpreting a style, but of finding a model to use for reference and this means we need to ask our clients many questions. We believe in respecting the local culture. Often today we find ourselves debating with Asian clients who want to adopt a Western model without understanding why. Years ago, when we started working in China, there were housing models there that resembled the residential buildings of New York in the 1930s. They had been created by the real-estate market without an appreciation of the context, which of course is very different from the American one. The market today, in China too, is more informed. I remember when I visited the Azuma house in the 1980s with Tadao Ando. The house had a day area and a night area separated by an open courtyard. Appropriately, Ando had followed through with a Shinto vision for the design. He wanted to pursue his country s culture as far as he could because he felt the threat posed by Western culture; he wanted to preserve his roots. Our work aims to bring as many

Design there is part of everyone s cultural world. It is not seen as a way of expressing status. There, the culture of living is widespread and is connected to the people s love for their country. There is also enormous respect for the environment and the natural world, something that is lacking in Italy. This culture of living needs to be kept alive inside and outside the home. Spreading it is our task as designers. The profession of designer is continually evolving. It is no longer tied to the figure of an artisan who turns out single pieces. Technology today has a fundamental role because it allows us to create extraordinary, unique products at a competitive price. As well as being able to design a pleasing object, the designer must understand the production cycle that brings the object into being, and must also focus on functionality and the right price. These are essential conditions for the survival of the design profession. A handmade object today is a luxury that industrial production cannot afford: making things by hand is a model that is totally divorced from the economic system. Envisaging a new form of craftsmanship means remaining anchored to a romantic vision that is incompatible with a professional approach to design. Thinking of recovering certain types of knowhow from the past or using recycled materials are not experiments that are wrong in themselves but they have nothing to do with the model of industrial production that makes it possible to create a product that is within everyone s reach. Our studio has never designed an object to be independent in itself: we have always seen it as an integral part of its setting. We never design a chair without a table. Designing a chair means representing a world, giving physical expression to a mode of living. In the mid- 80s I designed a very simple sofa, the Sity, that was an expression of the desire to watch TV in comfort. It was so successful that it set a standard. Everyone was creating sofas for talking, while we were designing one for eating, watching TV and sleeping. We apply the same mindset when we design kitchens. Some designers think of the tables in medical clinics when they create them; we think of domestic tables, crockery and light. It is the ability to design places that makes an architect an architect.
