2 I principali tipi di aggettivi sono: qualificativi: square, good, golden, fat, heavy, dry, clever, etc. dimostrativi: this, that, these, those. distributivi: each, every, either, neither. quantitativi: some, any, no, few, many, much, one, twenty, etc. interrogativi: which, what, whose, etc. possessivi: my, your, his, her, its, our, your, their.

3 Agreement Gli aggettivi hanno una forma soltanto, usata per il singolare, plurale, maschile e femminile: a good boy > good boys, a good girl > good girls Fanno eccezione solo gli aggettivi dimostrativi this e that, che al plurale fanno these e those: this cat > these cats, that man > those men

4 POSIZIONE DEGLI AGGETTIVI Gli aggettivi vengono prima del nome: a big town, a blue car, an interesting book. Se prima di un nome ci sono due o piu aggettivi, questi non sono generalmente separati dalla congiunzione (tranne se sono due aggettivi di colore): a big square box, a tall young man, six yellow roses, a black and white cap. Gli aggettivi qualificativi possono trovarsi dopo i verbi be, seem, appear, look (=seem). In questo caso fra i due aggettivi si mette la congiunzione and : the house looked large and beautiful. The weather was cold, wet and windy.

5 COMPARATIVI La grado di un aggettivo può esprimere una differenza di quantità, numero o qualità. I gradi degli aggettivi sono tre: POSITIVO DARK ATTRACTIVE COMPARATIVO DARKER MORE / LESS ATTRACTIVE SUPERLATIVO THE DARKEST THE MOST / LEAST ATTRACTIVE

6 COMPARATIVI Gli aggettivi composti da una sillaba (monosillabici) formano il comparativo aggiungendo -er e il superlativo aggiungento -est al grado positivo: Bright brighter the brightest, G. Se gli aggettivi monosillabici terminano con una singola vocale + consonante, questa consonante viene raddoppiata: thin thinner, big - bigger

9 COMPARATIVI Tutti gli aggettivi formano il comparativo e il superlativo di minoranza mettendo rispettivamente less e the least davanti all'aggettivo: This book is less interesting than the other. It is the least attractive of all the houses I have seen. Comparativi irregolari: good better the best bad worse the worst little less the least far further the furthest (per indicare distanza e tempo) far farther the farthest (per indicare persone e cose) old elder the oldest (per indicare persone e cose) old elder the eldest (per indicare solo le persone)

10 COMPARATIVI: costruzioni Il comparativo di uguaglianza si forma con as as nella frase positiva, not as as in quella negativa: A boy of sixteen is often as tall as his father. Your coffee is not as good as the coffee I make. Nel comparativo il secondo termine di paragone è introdotto da than: The Mississippi River is longer than the Nile. This building is less modern than that. Il superlativo è seguito da in, of o da una frase relativa: This is the oldest theatre in London. He is the tallest of the family He is the kindest man I have ever met. L'incremento o il decremento graduale si esprime con due comparativi uniti dalla congiunzione and: The weather is getting colder and colder This lesson is getting more and more interesting

13 AGGETTIVI E PRONOMI POSSESSIVI NB: L'antica forma per la 2a persona singolare thy / thine non è più usata nell'inglese corrente, ma si trova ancora nel linguaggio della Bibbia e in poesia.

14 Aggettivi possessivi In inglese l'aggettivo possessivo si riferisce al possessore e non alla cosa posseduta. The boy loves his mother. The girl loves her mother. A tree drops its leaves in autumn Il possessivo rimane sempre invariato anche se la cosa posseduta e al plurale. my book, my books - his aunt, his aunts L'aggettivo possessivo per le cose e gli animali è its, ma se sappiamo il sesso dell'animale, allora possiamo usare anche his/her. Se c è più di un possessore, si usa their per persone, animali e cose. The boys are playing with their ball. The girls are with their mothers. Trees drop their leaves in autumn.

15 Pronomi possessivi Sono usati per rimpiazzare l'aggettivo possessivo + nome. Seguono le stesse regole degli aggettivi possessivi. This is my pen. This is mine. This is their house. This is theirs. I have my pen. Have you got yours? Are those your books? No, they are hers. L'espressione of mine, of yours, etc. significa 'uno dei miei' etc. a friend of mine = one of my friends a sister of hers = one of her sisters.

17 ADVERBS AGGETTIVO O AVVERBIO? L aggettivo descrive un nome o un pronome: Taking care of a baby is hard work. L avverbio descrive un verbo: They worked hard. Ci sono 8 tipi di avverbio: 1. modo: quickly, bravely, happily hard, fast, well 2. luogo: here, there, up, down, near, by 3. tempo: now, soon, yet, still, then, today 4. frequenza: twice, often, never, always, occasionally 5. certezza: certainly, surely, definitely, obviously 6. quantita: very, fairly, rather, quite, too, hardly 7. interrogativi: when? where? why? 8. relativi: when, where, why

18 ADVERBS FORMAZIONE DEGLI AVVERBI DAGLI AGGETTIVI La maggior parte degli avverbi di modo ed alcuni avverbi di quantità si formano aggiungendo -ly all'aggettivo corrispondente: Slow, slowly - immediate, immediately Spelling notes: La -y finale cambia in -i: gay, gaily La -e si mantiene: extreme, extremely (eccezioni: true, due, whole diventano truly, duly, wholly) Gli aggettivi che terminano in able/ible perdono la -e dinale ed aggiungono -y: sensible, sensibly capable, capably Gli aggettivi che terminano in vocale + L seguono la regola ed aggiungono -ly: final, finally beautiful, beautifully.

19 ADVERBS FORMAZIONE DEGLI AVVERBI DAGLI AGGETTIVI Eccezioni L'avverbio di good e well. Gli aggettivi che terminano in -ly, ad esempio friendly, likely, lonely, lovely, lowly non hanno forma avverbiale. Per ovviare a questa mancanza si puo usare un avverbio simile o una frase avverbiale: friendly (agg.) - in a friendly way (frase avverbiale) likely (agg.) - probably (avv.) high, low, deep, near, far, fast, hard, early, late, much, little, direct, straight, pretty, wrong, kindly, enough possono essere usati come aggettivi o come avverbi: A high mountain (agg.) The eagle flew high (avv.)

20 ADVERBS PARAGONI FRA AVVERBI Gli avverbi composti da due o piu sillabe formano il comparativo mettendo more davanti all'avverbio, ed il superlativo mettendo most davanti all'avverbio: quickly more quickly most quickly fortunately more fortunately -most fortunately Gli avverbi monosillabici aggiungono -er per il comparativo e -est per il superlativo: hard harder hardest early earlier earliest (note that y become i) Comparativi irregolari: well better best badly worse worst late later latest little less least much more most far farther farthest (solo per indicare la distanza) far further furthest (per indicare distanza, tempo ed usato in senso astratto)

21 ADVERBS CONSTRUZIONI CON I COMPARATIVI Il comparativo di uguaglianza si forma as...as: He doesn't snore as loudly as you do Il comparativo è seguito da than: They arrived earlier than she did (than her) Con gli avverbi e possibile usare la forma the+comparativo the+comparativo: The earlier you start the sooner you'll finish. Con il superlativo e possibile usare of+all: He ran fastest of all

22 ADVERBS AVVERBI DI FREQUENZA Si trovano dopo i tempi semplici di to be: He is always in time for meals Si trovano prima dei tempi semplici di tutti gli altri verbi: They sometimes stay up all night. We sometimes meet for lunch Con i tempi composti, si trovano dopo l ausiliare. Alla forma interrogativa dopo il soggetto: They can never understand Have you ever ridden a camel? You have often been told not to do that.
