2 The Geologic Monitoring Center (CMG) started his activity in autumn 1987, after the Val Pola rock avalanche that happened in Valtellina, Lombardy, on July 28. The calamity happened in the provinces of Sondrio, Brescia, Bergamo, Lecco, and Como. From that time the Lombardy Region started to realize a specific center for the geologic monitoring.

6 The headquarters of the Center is in Sondrio and it is active 7 days a week with geologists and technicians available 24 hours a day. The main Center s activity consists in the monitoring of the biggest landslides of Lombardy, that can be a great danger for the people and human activities. To do this check we collected and analized the data trasmitted by sensor in real time or by periodic manual measurements. CMG s instruments, both automatic and manual: geotechnical (for example strain gauges, inclinometers ), hydro-meteorological, topographical, GPS and radar

7 The Center s networks are 26 distibuited in Lombardy 12 of this 26 monitoring networks have thresholds used for early warning and for critical events. The other monitoring are configured as study s areas with the possibility, in the future, of evolution in monitoring for early warning

8 The Center have 420 sensor with automatic acquisition and 120 point with manaul measurements.

levels, an inspection is performed on the ground with manual measurements.

11 The software compair the data with a fixed threshold value (defined in the most of cases by conventions with University) and If the comparison detects a situation of possible hazard, the system sends automatically an alarm for the geologists on duty When we have excess of the threshold levels, an inspection is performed on the ground with manual measurements. If the results of the surveys confirm the excess of threshold we communicate the situation to the Civil Protection of Lombardy to start the civil defense plans and we activate the continue monitoring 24 hours a day.
