Documents show that in 1498, Leonardo was commissioned by his Mianese patron, Ludovico i Moro Sforza - Duke of Mian from 1494 to 1498 to decorate the room now known as the Saa dee Asse (the room of the panks). The Saa, an imposing square ha with arge windows overooking the garden, was to be decorated using a kind of trompe d oei iusion to enarge the indoor space by painting it to ook ike a natura botanica outdoor space, to faunt the duchy s magnificence to visiting dignitaries. Leonardo s genius went far beyond simpy painting a fake pergoa. To aud Ludovico s pomp and spendour he chose to paint the Morus species, a deiberate reference to the Duke s nickname Moro, and through the tanged branches across the ceiing and around the famiy s coat of arms, he added some cords in god. This was done to emphasise the duchy s imnt economic position achieved by the deveopment of a modern sik industry in the Lombardy region, using muberry eaves to feed sik worms. In 1499, ess than a year after the painting had started, Mian was conquered by the French, who seized the caste and chose to use it as a miitary base. It was ony in 1954 foowing a post second word war restoration project that the sma monochrome section was reveaed and finay attributed to Leonardo. Today s sophisticated restoration project has exposed the charcoa section on one of the Saa s was which appears to depict a huge tree root embedded in a rock, confirming that the ornate ceiing decoration actuay continued down on to the was. To discover whether more of Leonardo s work is hiding, the ambitious assignment wi remove the ayers of whitewash and other residue which has accumuated over the years in order to revea what reay ies behind the Saa s was. So far, ony a sma section has been uncovered by hand with scapes and hammers. The buk of the project wi be carried out using state of the art utrasonic scaing machinery, aser equipment and chemicas with the hope of finding further sections of the monochrome. We ove amateurs I Cambristi-Miano was set up by the AIMA (Itaian Association of Amateur Musicians) to give aspiring musicians the opportunity to find ike-minded individuas to pay music and sociaise with. Despite the high percentage of graduates from the Conservatory among Lombardy s musicians, ony a fraction pay professionay resuting in a region fu of musicians with no opportunity to fufi their musica needs. Music is the universa anguage that can connect peope and cutures in a way that no other anguage can.
