Arlati) Biography, Bibliography, Exhibitions Biography Mario Arlati (born in Milan, 1947) is an Italian artist. He attends the School of Art in Castello Sforzesco in Milan. In his early years as an artist, Mario Arlati is known for his figurative artistic style. In 1970s, he moves to Ibiza together with his family; during this period, his artistic approach evolves and his works manifest a new expressive dimension, stemmed from the Balearic Islands scenery. The evolvement from figurativism to informalism derives from the Spanish contemporary art setting. The paintings he creates become walls as he defines them: walls of sunset and sunrise, a portrayal of the bright, sunny atmosphere of the island Ibiza. His walls represent the harmony and the symbiosis between man and nature, but also the continual corrosion caused by the sun, the wind and the sea, that creates and brings into life unique and incomparable objects. Arlati perceives the surface of his walls as «matter that conceals other matter». Matter exists because of colour, not necessary qualified by its beauty or its ugliness, neither by its aspiring to be something, but by traits that are acquired by whatever form the subject takes; an active substance that dynamically translates into art and saved by its transformation into a passive matter. Colour is occasionally explicitly enunciated in titles, such as White-Red-Green, while at times it is simply suggested, as when Arlati writes Tending to red or Tending to blue. It also takes on surprising symbolic connotations; for instance, black evokes fear and the unknown, white suggests the purity of an idea, blue the peremptory nature of a vision, while red calls up images of blood and violence.
