SHULÙQ SOUNDS AND RHYTHMS FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN The Shulùq recording project is a tribute to the peoples and cultures facing the Mediterranean through the music of present-day composers coming from different geographical areas and diverse cultural and musical experiences. Mare Nostrum is understood as the ideal place where the simultaneous presence of past, present and future is possible, together with the coexistence of the experiences and ideals of the peoples that bathe in its waters. The pieces contained in Shuluq have been specially composed for the project and are dedicated to its author: Calogero Giallanza. Shuluq is the transliteration from Arabic of the wind called Sirocco (the south-east wind), the word with which Tunisian sailors call the hot wind that blows from the Sahara and other North African regions in all the lands washed by the Mare Nostrum. The sirocco is one of the most familiar winds in the Mediterranean area and its name has many different translations: siroc in French and Provençal xaloc in Catalan, sirocco, jiroque, jaloque or xaloque in various Spanish dialects, siròkos in modern Greek. But most interestingly, the wind is in some way adopted by the Mediterranean populations depending on the country where it blows: jugo in the former-jugoslavia, ghibli in Libya, while in France, where it reaches the coast soaked with humidity, it takes the name of marin. Shuluq, this hot and humid wind, symbolizes the breath and respiration of the Mediterranean, thus representing the soul of the Mare Nostrum, a bridge made of harmonies, sounds and feelings that are shared by all the peoples living on its coasts. Their myths, their colours, their fragrances and their stories. One single feeling expressed in varied genres and styles, in a geographical and human region filled with ancient and more recent cultural echoes, of intertwined stories, of fatigue and sorrow, of joys and passions, of departures and migrations, of hopes and nostalgia, that resound in a polyphony of different languages: a Mare Nostrum that has often been stained with blood, but that can nonetheless still speak of peace.
